As we gear up for the GTBank Lagos Fashion & Design Week 2013, we can only anticipate all the gorgeous couture, eclectic street styles and fabulousity that comes with the fashion week in the heart of Lagos.
Speaking of which, guess who is going to be showcasing an Ethiopian inspired collection at this years LFDW. It’s the eccentric and eponymous design label Kiki Kamanu and it will be unveiling its latest collection tagged “The Abyssian Adventure” Spring/Summer 2014 collection.
Inspired by the designers travel to & around Ethiopia, her new collection was birthed when she discovered the Menen fabric. As the designer watched the weavers working on the Menen fabric by hand, not only was she inspired to incorporate it into her collection, she was also reminded of the century old Akwete and Aso-oke fabric process in the eastern and western Nigeria respectively.
With her discovery of the fabric coupled with the rainbow themed skirts and colourful beads of the Konso women of Ethiopia, Kiki Kamanu was inspired by the warmth and humility of the elegant tribes as they welcomed her into the fabrics of their lives.
We cant wait to see how she incorporates all this inspiration with her signature eclectic pieces.
