A young police officer who used to be part of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Yomi SARS has in an interview with Pulse TV explained why he believes the squad should not be scrapped.
Yomi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police who is also a musician, said 90% of the people in the videos posted on social media showing extortion are not officials attached to SARS.
Police brutality is a sad reality in every country, he said, giving an example of friends of his who were abused and extorted by South African police.
He highlighted several ways through which police brutality can be reduced, including removing SARS officials from the roads, leaving them in offices to be called only when they are needed.
He added that leaders of Community Development Associations (CDAs) should meet with the policemen in charge of their areas, introduce each household, so that the policemen can easily be reached in times of trouble.
