A new law set to come into force on Saturday in Germany will strengthen calls by women for equal pay, the nation’s Women’s Affairs minister said on Thursday.

According to the Minister, Katarina Barley, if a woman is sure that she will be paid less than a man, then, she can make a claim for equal pay for equal and equivalent work.

“From Saturday, when the law comes in to effect, workers will have the opportunity to find out which of their colleagues earn more,’’ Barley said.

The new law, which is aimed at closing the wage gender gap, applies to companies with over 200 employees.

“What people are paid is still a taboo subject.

“Most women, therefore, often do not know how much they earn in comparison to their male colleagues, who are doing an equal or equivalent job,” she said.

“If a woman gets paid less than her male colleagues, then she can now also approach her company’s in-house union representatives,’’ the minister, who is a member of the centre-left Social Democrats, said.

Are the men also going to have paternity leave for the same amount of time as the ladies?

Please stick to the issue at hand which is equal gender pay. After all. does the woman get paid in full for the duration of her maternity leave?

@EC i feel you, labor is no joke. @fear God 1) Yes, they do. 2) I could be wrong but I believe ladies get paid less because they could possibly get pregnant and are legally entitled to paid maternal leave. Granted not everyone is guaranteed to get pregnant but companies usually factor in the fact that their female staff could become indisposed for a long period of time as a result of pregnancy and in order to maximize profits, they might pay them less. Not saying its Ideal but thats how it is. Its not like the difference between salaries gets shared between the guys so believe me when I say I dont have anything against equal pay. That my dear is the issue at hand, hope I havent confused you even more.

You’re wrong. It is illegal to pay women less because they might get pregnant as it is discrimination based on gender. Most companies pay women less because women don’t negotiate their base salary or raise or they are penalized in performance reviews. Also there is usually paid and unpaid portions of maternity leave but it will country to country. But in the US that had the shortest amount of paid maternity leave, women still earn less than men.

Not every woman (married or not married) has/ or wants a child … you have to put that into consideration hence the law being applicable. Plus there are companies who offer paternity leave….

These companies spend a substantial portion of their operation budget on very expensive lawyers, you think they would be stupid enough to come out and literally say to a female employee, “we will pay you less because you MIGHT get pregnant”? They go about it in subtle manners. As the article above implies, these employees probably dont know what their colleagues earn, so how are you going to know you are being paid less if you have nothing to compare your salary to?

This equality things sometimes doesnt make any sense at all. Why will any one want to pay men more than women. Why?? If women provide cheaper labour, trust me i will employ women strictly and leave all d men unemployed. Why pay more for same labour….Except they talking long run averages resulting from time offs etc. Then they better stop making it sound like men are responsible for this gap. Even female business owners have similar gaps.

Anyway wetin concern me and European women issh. I wan to hear and debate african women and Nigerian women, na there ma heart de. Anyway my opinion, my right?

ssssh ,your too logical for the fish brains ..there brains don’t let them think that far…all this will do is to hire more men and reduce women employment…that is all..No company likes drama and would do anything to avoid it..( they won’t tell it to your face)..and women are sentimental dramas waiting to explode….if truly women are paid less…Then women will fill every company.. just like companies like to do with illigal immigrants or outsources their product and servicse to countries like India and China bcos they are damn cheaper .
.. .lol at the place you said you want to hear from Nigerian womyn.. Believe me, they are more dumber and foolish.. their own is to be screaming “men are scum” and “broke men” and posting feminist quotes online.

      January 4, 2018 at 4:23 pm

you may have a point about “if women are cheaper you would hire more women”…but even at that check most companies there are still more men than there are women, even though the women are cheaper labour… so what does that tell you? GENDER BIAS!! believing that a man is more competent just cause he is a man really!!! please let us all be paid the same. Do you know how annoying it is that you are doing the same job as a man but he is getting higher pay….does he have two heads…sometimes you could even be more competent but because you are a woman it is over looked.

      @John

This is idiotic speak as usual. You need to stay out of discussions that are above your intelligence. Or stick to retrogressive Nigerian topics. No it will not ‘reduce’ the employment of women because companies still have to fulfil a quota. Most big businesses in the West are left leaning and will continue to be so because they have learned bigotry is unprofitable. Fighting for social justice is good PR for them. You are not an employer of labor, you are poor and your voice has no impact whatsoever. If that is too hard to swallow, take a rope and kill yourself.

@YASS..gender bias at the expense of company profitability? Do you hear yourself talk at all?

The maternity leave is a valid point. Imagine one hospital with two neurosurgeon. One male and one female and then there is an emergency but the female in on maternity leave thereby making the hospital hire a specialist to help the male who will cost the hospital more. Is it the hospital owner that straffed the woman for him/her to be punished for her leave and also paying her for the time.

At the end of the day, i can choose not to employ you. It’s not anybody’s business especially if I have some professional mumbo jumbo to use as reason

By the way women and children are still the first to be evacuated from war and disaster scenes. Women also do not fight to be allowed to go to war front. Very convinient human beings.

Women are now in combat roles in most armies in the west and the idea of women and children first is actually a myth.
Studies showed that 60%of disaster fatalities on boats were actually women because they get trampled in the rush.

Lmao, this one will say he has written something worthwhile. Very foolish, unrealistic and basic analogies. Gender pay gap has absolutely nothing to do with ‘maternity leave’ other than the poor negotiating skills of the women involved. In the US for example, maternity leave is unpaid. Most Women return back to work after 6 weeks. People accrue benefit time off (which everyone is guaranteed) for vacation, sick days and use this instead in order to get paid. The ‘female’ neurosurgeon uses her vacation hours like everyone else in order to get paid. Also when the ‘male’ neurosurgeon is on his one month leave, the female surgeon covers for him as well. Nevertheless the argument is unrealistic because the likelihood of a hospital in the West struggling between two doctors. Lmao @ hospital owner. What is the meaning of that? A whole hospital will have two neurosurgeons? Or are you confusing a clinic to a hospital? Or you think you are in your backward village in Nigeria?

Bill Gates foundation, Netflix, Adobe, Google, and Facebook now offer their employees parental leave in the US. Poor people like yourself are on BN bleeding profusely and wearing menstrual pads for these billionaires.

Secondly, it’s only fair that men should DIE in wars they start. For example, Nigeria boasts of a 95% male dominated government. It’s only fair for Nigerian men die in wars because of policies they have engineered so far. Call me when women dominate policy making schemes.

In nigeria there likely is a gender gap in the corporate world. The higher you move in the ranks the higher the pay. At most publicly listed firms we have more men in management positions than women. The culprit is culture, we place higher value on leadership by men than women even has to mock men that do not have any form of leadership or potential to earn followership.

@lee maybe I was wrong. I like when ‘studies show’. However can you share a link to some of this studies so I can actually see and not be as foolish as the engoz or whatever her name is just above this comment?

I might be wrong about maternity too. I have had a job messed up because of a pregnant woman before so I feel sometype of way with employing women generally to some roles but that is NOT to say women can’t do it.

Women get posted to combat zones on request in the west (you can go and check that fact out) but women do not even fight to get as much slot in combat area as men. How many have you actively seen during parades or handling war machines? People generally feel under appreciated but men are taught to keep quiet. That’s why men don’t talk about unjust pay in some areas. In other areas where men earn higher, that’s because they negotiated properly but women don’t like to hear this. Is there no coy where some women earn higher than their colleagues?….male or female.

@Crazy World, I might not agree with everything you’ve said but I think you’re very rational in your approach.
From my perspective, there is a gender bias on the corporate environment and while we can vilify men, the reality is that many women don’t help the situation at all. I’ve worked in a company where women worked hard and late till the 9th month of pregnancy because everyone was treated the same and expected to be on top of their game but I’ve also worked in a place where women once they knew they were the tiniest bit pregnant, dragged and slacked off simply because management was sympathetic to pregnancy. You find women not wanting to stir waters nor be disruptive; taking all manner of time off in the name of my child has cough, rushing home while everyone is still hard at work because “I have to cook for my husband” and worst of all, women sabotaging each other. In my experience, as a woman, you’re more likely to advance professionally with a man as your boss than if you have a woman- many of which will just despise you for no concrete reason; particularly if THEIR boss likes you. I realise my experience is limited but honestly, many women are not ready for corporate waters. The amazing ones are fantastic though and they do not deserve to be punished because of the liabilities.
      My two cents.
