Need a highly riveting, action packed book to read? Read Her Lover by Sinmisola Ogunyinka. The intriguing adventures of CJ and Amanda as they search for the truth around Nikky’s mysterious disappearance, which causes them to become increasingly aware of the mutual attraction they have for each other, is like watching a movie starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. With CJ being his impulsive and gritty self, and Amanda being the tough and street-hardened young woman—fighting hard to not betray her tender side—their relationship is both funny and nervy.

Although a work of fiction, Her Lover is a book that shines the spotlight on the terrible consequences of living on the fast lane. In the quest for money and what it can afford, many young people subject themselves to degrading, debasing, and absolutely repugnant perversions. Sadly, many times, they pay the ultimate price for subjecting themselves to such sub-human treatments.

Her Lover also brings forward the underlying reasons, in a good number of cases, why many young men and women are drawn to the wild side, notable of which is the desire to escape the devastating effects of a broken home and escape poverty, as exemplified by the lives of Amanda and her brother, Emeka.

Notwithstanding the fact that a person might have been living a very “rough” life, fraught with debauchery and drugs, Her Lover shows that it is still possible for such persons to be rescued from that way of life, and become decent and responsible human beings again. In the book, we see Amanda, who had been very wild and desperate, and had even introduced Nikky to life on the fast lane, get to a turning in her life when she is determined to never return to the things she had left behind. Thus, Her Lover reminds us that there is indeed hope for those who, either by choice or circumstance, are presently living debauched lives.

Sometimes, however, the stigma of a person’s past life may not always leave after they have changed. Therefore, young people must know that they may not always be able to live without the stigma from the past, and should make sure to always make very responsible choices.

Her Lover is replete with vital lessons, and Sinmisola Ogunyinka is no doubt highly skilled at passing such lessons through storytelling. She knows how to capture the attention of a reader, so that you would not want to stop reading, and because I am a lover of all things adventurous – be it games, movies, documentaries, or books – I had a nice time reading this book. You will too.
