Tai Adeboyeku Spring 2014 Collection - BellaNaija - November2013018
Presenting the new Spring/Summer 2014 collection from eponymous Nigerian design label – Tai Adeboyeku.

The collection is hitting all the right fashion notes for the classy and edgy fashionista. Featuring clean cut silhouettes on A-line dresses, streamlined & tailored trousers, asymmetrical cut outs, dresses with embroidered detail and tulle fabric skirts, the pieces are represent the formal side of Spring.

According to the designer, the collection was inspired by the romantic period. “A woman should feel innocent but also be romantic. I am a huge fan of Jane Austen novels and I always wanted my work to reflect on the novels I’ve read, especially Pride and Prejudice.

The picture of the movies inspired me with a color palette for this spring 2014 collection – soft, calm and romantic. Since I am of Nigerian decent, I wanted to incorporate the fabric of my heritage in this collection. Each piece has it’s own story. The looks that have a victorian embroidered detail, symbolize the curves of a modern woman and how it makes the woman feel, which is very powerful but yet innocent and romantic.

Overall I can call this spring 2014 collection a romantic novel and each look is its own chapter”.

Well said Tai. Check out the collection below.

I really like the white dress in the last picture. It’s elegant in every way. I would suggest the designer invests in better construction, by either hiring a professional or changing the one they are currently using. Refined pieces like this require an excellent finish to get the point across properly. Aside from that it’s a good effort and nice to see something a bit different that still identifies as african.

Am I missing something? Besides the second look, the designs have been done before. The fabrics used are unforgiving, and the comments here seem to reinforce the Naija belief that if clothing is fitted/tight/cinched to the point you can’t breathe, then the designer must know what they’re doing. The tailoring is not that good either (more obvious on the transparent fabrics, which I admit can be hard to sew) and some of the slits look tacky, as if there wasn’t enough fabric (eg look 19). Hope to see more from the designer, perhaps just something more refined. There seems to be something there, and lots of experimenting with styles, which is nice.

The designs aren’t bad, it’s the construction and stitching that let the collection down. The bust seams on most of the pieces aren’t properly curved and flatten the models chests rather unflatteringly. Design and creativity, not bad…. Tailoring and fit need improvement.
