The Alexander Review: The songs you need this week
Whether it be Afro pop, Afrobeats, RnB or the ever-pleasing Alternative sound, be sure to find your taste in this review. Sometimes, it goes down to the fact that an artiste is out there trying to attain fame and climb the ladder of stardom. Here are my two cents on the songs that dropped last week:
Gbayi – CDQ featuring Kiss Daniel
CDQ and Kiss Daniel are two-in-two for ‘Gbayi’. A hardcore reggae melody sees CDQ spitting bars while Kiss Daniel went in on the hook and back-up vocals.
Rating: 4/5
Sunshine – Patoranking
Catch a love vibe with Patoranking in ‘Sunshine’, with its checked Afro beats, Patoranking is laid-back with this banger.
Rating: 4.5/5
Yawa – Ajebutter22 X Boj
If you remember ‘Omo pastor,’ you would understand how flawless their collaboration is. I can’t wait to listen to the full project – this is just a warm-up melody.
Rating – 4/5
Mata – Peruzzi
‘Mata’ is a mid-tempo song with energetic instrumentals. Peruzzi will fly with this one in a bit.
Rating: 4/5
CTRL – Al Ghalib
Al Ghalib got fired up on this one; a surprise release for his waiting fans.
Rating: 3/5
In love and Ashes – 2Baba
Though it is a soundtrack for an upcoming series, 2Baba’s music and sound will always be appreciated. This is just legendary. In love and ashes is a mid-tempo social conscious song with drums and local guitar.
Rating: 4/5
One Naira (MI and Waje cover) – J’Dess
With a soft feel that did not really reflect in the original piece, J’Dess just wowed with her vocals.
Rating: 4/5
Kolawole Anibaba – Kayswitch
Kayswitch just gave pop a run for its money. This is definitely a club banger.
Rating: 4/5
Sing Along – Joe EL
The man who is often compared with 2Baba in terms of looks and vocals is here again. Joe EL’s performance on a caribbean melody is cool. He really did well, in my opinion.
Rating: 4/5
4am at 4point – Phenomenom
Phenomenom’s flow is sleek, skippy and spacey. The trap-infused track is laden with a time machine and a racing beat.
Rating: 4/5
Topic – Selebobo
The talented producer is rebellious on ‘topic’ as he addressed political issues. The Afro beats rich track will be a party tune.
Rating: 4/5
Jolo (Remix) – OmoAkin featuring Banky W
Omoakin enlisted Banky W to grace the remix of his hit single. Banky W also provided back up vocals.
Rating: 3.5/5
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
They are sometimes written off as follow-up or radical releases – The Nigerian sound has a vast love and is capable of taking a new direction if the fans love it. Regardless, they are still welcomed.
