Pearls Africa Foundation’s Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin celebrates Birthday with A Mentorship Program for Young Girls
Our CNN Hero celebrated this year’s birthday by bringing professional ladies to mentor young girls from underserved communities! Compere of the workshop was Mercy Ajisafe.
There were 90 girls and 60 mentors in attendance! The Theme of this year’s edition is “Beauty, Body & Brains” . The day started with 2 guest speakers inspiring the girls on Identity and Self-image held by Yejide Aina and Yetunde Bernard-Bankole.
Girls and mentors were briefed on what to expect for the day and how to make the best use of what they were about to learn. Then the atmosphere changed when the breakout session started on speed mentoring/one on one mentoring session.
Prior to this day, mentors registered online indicating their areas of interest, there were topics like peer pressure, molestation, cyberbully, sex education, mathematics made simple, Teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence, Self-esteem, black beauty (My skin color is beautiful).
On the ‘d day’, mentors wore different tags based on these topics and girls rotated mentors after spending 10minutes having a discussion. Girls were able to express themselves and ask questions on the different issues bothering them.
Afterwards, there was a vision board session that lasted for 2hours this was held by Sandra Akpujiha who talked about the science of vision board and all mentors took the practical side of this!
The Girls left with their own vision board collage of where they will like to see themselves in the future! Thereby creating their own future! Girls eventually gave feedback on what they were able to learn! The program lasted 6hours! Cake, food, and drinks were available for everyone!
