Heavy gunfire Reported in Brazzaville, Congo | Residents Flee

The Congolese army engaged in a battle of heavy gunfire with unidentified assailants in the southern part of Congo’s capital, Brazzaville, on Monday.

According to Daily Mail, several explosions were heard by witnesses who said the clash began in the Makelekele and Mayana districts of Brazzaville in the early hours of the morning and continued till dawn. The gunfire, the witnesses, said became increasingly sporadic and residents had to flee for safety.

Although the cause of the clash was not clear, Daily Mail reports that the people of the republic of Congo have been agitated since Denis Sassou Nguesso‘s 32 years in office was extended when he was declared winner of the March 20 presidential election.

The results, now currently being examined by Congo’s constitutional courts, were however denounced by five defeated candidates who claimed that the former paratrooper colonel won the elections by “massive fraud” and accused him of corruption and nepotism.
