‘The Insouciant’- Debut Collection from Alali Boutique
Posted on Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 at 1:41 PMBy Ijeoma Ndekwu
There are different kinds of designers in the Industry that serves them. You have one’s who create their niche, and deliver speciality designs, there are those who focus on the intricacies of Haute Couture, and amongst the many breeds of designers, you have those who want to serve the everyday woman- Be with her through her journey to work, to the mall, to pick up the kids, to lunch etc. These designers focus on wearability, ease and simplicity.
Alali Boutique focuses on pret-a-porter. There are no over-elaborate cuts, or avant-garde styles, and I am not seeking for their designs to appeal to me in that way. I want clean lines, a proper finish, and everyday chic sophistication. The appeal- is the designs ability to instill an interest in me to get it off the rack and wear it to a movie with my friends! Dress it up! Dress it down! Channel my style through these pieces. I am not going for fashion, but opting for a platform to express my individual style.
The collection is called ‘The Insouciant’, which means ‘a casual lack of concern or indifference’. ‘Insouciant’ can also be used in place of words such as ‘care-free’, ‘easy-going’ or as Nigerians would say, ‘I-DONT-CARE’. While these words all have negative hints, it is important that such insouciance is not confused with a lack of passion.
‘The Insouciant’ knows what is important to her and is passionate about it, however she also knows that nothing is ever ‘do-or-die’. The Insouciant represents that freedom and liberation in knowing that there are many doors- When one closes, the other opens. ‘The Insouciant’ is an attitude to life as well as an attitude to fashion- it is easy-going, unhampered and comfortable.

Love the oufits but a studio job would have been better to bring out the beauty of the oufits, can’t my eyes past the black face, back knee caps and fair legs on pix 6 & 10!!! Make-up? no no! Still saying, lovely outfits.
totally gorgeous collection.carmen rili az hot legz
frightening pieces…except the one with the butterfly back….frightening!
a three minute YAWN!
ITS REALLY INSOUCIANT! i take back my first comment! its alrite n nicely insouciant!
i like
Love the purple top and skirt, white shirt and skirt, and the black dress…over all nothing to throw your credit card at, but not bad…
LOVE IT!!! Designs are sooo practical! I can see myself rocking EVERY single piece! Good job!
Nice collection even though it would have benefited from professional modeling. There is room for a brand like this one , but the models all appeared to have the same pained expression in all the pictures.
On another note, why do most of Ijeoma Ndekwu’s introductions read like promo pieces for the labels rather than objective or thoughtful reviews? I noticed an improvement recently but it seems we’re back to the same ole, same ole. I mean this whole write-up read like something written by the PR department of Alali Boutique!
DUH… MAYBE SHE USES THEIR PRESS RELEASES!
My dear don’t duh me when you don’t know what you’re saying. This introduction is signed by Ijeoma Ndekwu and if ,as you suggest, she has just copied and pasted a press release then that would be unprofessional. Just throwing “duhs” around willy-nilly….are you Tonto Dikeh?
My dear don’t duh me when you don’t know what they’re saying. If she had used a press release then it would be signed “sponsored content” so the readers are aware. Just throwing “duhs” around willy nilly….are you Tonto Dikeh?
P.S: This comment had better get posted this time around!
Go Romzy! Luv it.
i want them all!!!!!!!!!!!
ANKARA mini skirt and white shirt. Loving it. definitely making it my travel out. Which reminds me i need to holla @ my tailor.

Nice!! Simple and not over-the-top..
OIS BABES are doing big things oo… Nice one .. Carmen i see youu.. I just saw Tola too..
not particularly impressed but like a few of the pieces like the butterfly back….
n yeah i know its ready to wear ….
The clothes are ok but what is it with these models. Pouty pucker fish lips and crossed legs. They take away from the clothes when they do these silly poses. The shoot director should probably take the blame for this one; either be natural or find a pose and setting that shows off the clothes. Its rather distracting…the devil is in the details.
Beeeeyyyyyoooottttiiiffffuuuuulllll I would wear/buy EVERYTHING! Well done, kudos, more grease…
too boring, people just coping other guys designs…..people make your own designs
lol. the introduction to the line sounds like a disclaimer. lol.
Nice
Never commented before but…wow!!! I love it all. I just wish “our” models would have a variety of hairstyles. Not same ol same ol weaves, “long hair”
Damn, these models sha…….

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Well done!!
go oroma! Love ‘em all.
I am not one to comment on photographs on bella naija because i have a J.O.B! Today i felt this extreme urge to say something. The designer has very lovely pieces based on her recent showcased collection. The photographer on the other hand needs severe tutoring. He obviously isnt a professional and probably just practices photography when he is BORED! He didnt even attempt editing the photographs that he knew will be published on a major media outlet such as bellanaija. From the toe nails to the ankles, knees, knuckles and most importantly the face, he did such a horrible job. The models however represented and were satisfactory. Next, the make up artist needs to be AXED! How dare she use colors so bright on beautiful dark skinned girls? This is the problem with Nigeria, people always follow trends and forget that in fashion you wear what suits you and what looks right. If she was going for an edgy look then it should have been more refined and the theme would have flowed. Now, it just looks strange. She made all the models look older than their ages and extremely fatigued. My advise to the designer is to invest in a professional photgrapher and make-up artist to boost the image of her work as opposed to reducing it. Again, i am not hating! i am just keeping it real and hundred. when you are in the creative industry you have to be prepared to recieve constructive criticism. *humble bow*
Wao! we learn everyday, @ udontneedtoknowmyname so commenting on bellenaija is for the jobless huh? that said, nice collection: creative designs.
i think I see her point. Sometimes I wonder how folk can post so often on BN and other blogs / forum, with a job and other commitments, i never have more that the odd 5 mins to spare. . .
We all start somewhere, Cheers to the first steps. I am liking this
Very nice collection. I really like the clothes.
i love love it
very wearable collection.
I’m not going to harp on the “models” used and the quality of make-up as many people have already spoken wisely. I do have to say though that there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with using light make-up on dark people, it’s all about it being done well
whats up with the model with the wanna be Victoria Beckham pout???i liked some of the designs but the models, makeup, styling, and photography, was just pointless.
Gimme the 10th outfit…i go de bump it on ASAP
WOW, the collection is wow !
I’ve just discovered your blog today. Nice job ! Nigerian women are so stylish and creative.
xoxo from a “chasseuse de styles” in brussels

Wooop!!! My girls look hot!!!
The outfits could have looked better if they were worn proper.
To the fashion designer – way to go girl!! I’ve grabbed an outfit already and I’m totally loving it!!
No matter what people say, you’ve got it going on – and you can only get better & better & better & better!!
These designs are all sooooooooooooooooo lovely, the models are simply gorgeous
