Dana Air Plane Heading from Abuja to Lagos Crashes in Iju, Lagos

Published

 on

Sad news reaching us is that a commercial airliner operated by DANA Air has crashed in the Iju area of Lagos. The aircraft was arriving from Abuja on a local flight when it crashed into a powerline in the area.

According to the report by Sahara Reporters, the plane had 153 passengers on board.

Femi Oke-Osanyinpolu, Lagos state emergency state manager, said Sunday that casualty numbers are unknown.

Harold Demuren, head of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), confirmed the crash. He said the Dana Air flight was heading from Lagos to Abuja in Nigeria. He said federal authorities were on their way to the site of the crash.

This news gives me shivers. Just minutes after reporting news of the bomb blast in Bauchi, now this.

The number of casualties has not been ascertained, but I pray for the lives of all those that were on board that plane and people that were in the area where it crashed.

May God be with us all.

UPDATE: The NCAA has confirmed that there were no survivors on the plane. Such sad news.

No, Yetty. We have enough prayers already. We need to all WORK to change Nigeria, in our behaviour, our value systems and our general attitude to life. WORK not prayer. WORK. That’s the best prayer

      June 3, 2012 at 7:21 pm

I completely agree with you Pirato. I have nothing wrong with people praying but we need to start doing our WORK/JOB as Nigerians. If we pray from now till next century, if we don’t do our part of the job nothing is going to change. Faith without works is dead. God plays his role and we Nigerians just sit down there doing nothing. God is not going to fall from heaven to service the plan. It is high time we held people in authority accountable. This is really really sad. My heart bleeds for Nigeria. RIP to all the Victims. May God comfort their relatives and friends.

I feel really sorry for you. I guess I’m not the only person that put up a comment about this. You obviously have the time to browse all the newspapers and internet sites……I don’t, this was the first site I came to so as to know the flight details and check on loved ones but its insults that you have to show for your great education. If you had all the details why not reply with that instead of insults????? Please please I beg you, lives are gone, let’s not do this.

I am dumbfounded and I pray that God comfort the families of the bereaved. I read online that a powerline caused the crash. I wonder how the plane could have have come so close to the ground. When things happen like this we all start asking strange questions. Let God consoled Nigeria. I have always boted them as one of the best airlines. For almost two years now I have always boarded them coz by my judgement they are one of the best. It is a well funded airline so they hardly cut corners. Its really beyond all of this am even talking now. I am really in pain for families who have lost dad, mum, aunties, brothes and sisters. I magine their agony. I pray this will never happen again. in Jesus Name. Amen
Imagine escaping from Boko haram as only coming to die via a crash?

A little girl played with me, she dose’nt even know me but she was all over me.
Her mum was smiling with surprised, because her daughter
dose’nt allow allow strangers to carry her.
She cried wen i was leaving. i left b4 them.
I missed her, it’s a pain in my heart. This is wickedness!

Yes,this is another plane with 153 people on board,it did crash at Toyin Street, Iju Ishaga, Agege a suburb in Lagos state. The Dana Plane carrying passengers from Abuja to Lagos was just a short distance from reaching the
Murtala Mohammed Airport Ikeja. Several houses have been affected and casualty figure is unknown. This is coming on the heels of another plane crash in Accra Ghana just yesterday involving a Nigerian cargo plane with 10 dead. News reaching me also has the DG of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Service confirming that there were no survivors in the crash.
Now the question is what is happening in the Nigerian aviation industry?. May God protect us all and R.I.P boarders

While having faith is good, what is needed to turn the country around is hard work from all of the people here. The only thing that can change things for the better is to actually do something. God can do much, but as humans we need to work ourselves and not put it into the hands of someone else.

Is it true that the Abuja airport flight control officer refused to allow the plane to fly but the Indians insisted that it must take off?

    • Sawo

      June 4, 2012 at 5:44 am

Intelligent question. If this is true, the Mgt of Dana Airline should be made to pay compensation to the families of the deceased. Not that compensation will replace the lives lost or heal the hurt in their loved ones left behind, it will serve as deterent to other airlines that might be tempted to cut corners in future. Those responsible for such decisions should in addition be charged in court (assuming the courts will serve justice) and made to face sanctions. It is high time individuals and organizations are held accountable for their actions or inactions in this great country. Nigerians should with one voice demand justice rather than spreading sympathy – good as that may be. Investigations as to the actual cause of the crash should be given to private non currupt agencies as well as officers of the aviation industry entrusted with such duties and at the end, reports of all investigations (governmental as well as independent) should be made public.

    • Brittany

      June 3, 2012 at 11:33 pm

I agree that air disasters happen everywhere however Air disaster happens to be a norm in Nigeria that is why people are trying to flee from Nigeria. I can remember visiting Nigeria three summers ago, I took a flight from Lagos to Abuja and the weather was perfect, however the plane was shaking from start to finish. It’s not like there was some thunderstorm, hailstorm or snow. The plane was just bad. People should be able to fly and have a smooth ride. I don’t want to be screaming God/Allah/Buddah ever two seconds because of some raggedy airline.

Is GOD going to put water in the trucks for us. We really need to start getting our priorities right in Nigeria. We have started to accept abnormalities as a usual way of life. After 3 days of mourning, what next? Boko haram has been bombing incessantly and its almost becoming normal until it affects one of us directly. i don’t know o but i’m tired of hearing bad news from Nigeria. Its too depressing!

Every body says we need prayers, if you check around in nigeria we pray without ceasing.
But as we pray do we even love our fellow neighbour.
I read a newspaper on saturday, punch- i think its for friday 1st of june precisely.. i hope im right.
Some said and i quote that we nigerians ADJUST TO BAD THINGS- WE SHOULD ALL TRY AND ADJUST TO BAD THINGS. Plane crash bomb blast all can be avoided or reduced if YOU and I show little love to one another. if we allow whites to rule us again we would complain that we are enslaved but no they want good results and they want to move forward. Western world still rules us indirectly but we are not aware.. thruthfully i feel sad and the pain and restriction is too much for us all in nigeria.
    1. Fuel hike
    2. Bomb Blast
    3. Accidents from tankers
    4. Accidents from bad roads
    5. Road blocks and Armed robbers
    6. PHCN/NEPA high tariff-hike
    7. If PHCN/NEPA gives us light its a privilege we need to beg that they take it so that they will give us for another day or we will be able to sleep with LIGHT. so much indused suffering and we all work hard.
May God Help Heal our wounds. Ameeenn!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your story is contradicting the title. “Harold Demuren, head of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), confirmed the crash. Abuja or Lagos? May God rest their souls.

My heart bleeds, not for the dead, but the living
Who are using these incidents for feasting
And the tribal politics that will follow
As a result of their parochial brains that have remained fallow

My fragile heart bleeds, not for patroits gone
But for those who have left their brethren forlorn
I weep not for the dead in church or in the crashed plane,
    Who their destinations have known

But for those on this plane
Wallowing and basking in the unknown.

  150. I wish!!

    June 4, 2012 at 10:33 am

There is a side to this coin we are not looking at and that is the fact that the engineers have complained that the plane is faulty and needed to be properly examined. But the Indian management would not hear of such because as far as they are concern who would hold them responsible seeing we have a porous system where everything is allowed after “hand has wash hand”. I can tell you that even the pilot and staff would have complained about this either based on other experience of flying that plane. But as usual they have no regard for human lives compared to making money especially when the lives involves are bloody Nigerians “black”. Don’t forget it is a local flight and not an international one. I have been in this situation before and i just feel pity for the staff of this company and the lives of other Nigerians on that plane. I wish for a revolution in the Nigeria regulatory system….”sobs”……. God help us all

In Nigeria, our national heroes are corrupted leaders that have amassed the wealth of the nation for themselves, been to prison and back to oppress the people, illiterates and ill-educated. And yes, we allow them!!! Yesterday’s tragedy could have been avoided, if only we have systems that work, rules that are followed, leaders that have the best intention of their citizens at heart. God! PEOPLE WE HAVE VOICES LETS USE them, your family or friends could be next ( before you echo – God forbid; well, guess what? He didn’t forbid yesterday’s tragedy)!!!

i dont think its right for u to blame your leaders. accidents occur eveywhere even in developed countries. its not as if the leaders were the ones piloting the plane. i think the engineers should be blamed cos they didnt check everything before the plane took off. if we blames our leaders for this, are we going to blame them for the various attacks on innocent people? members of boko haram sect are normal citizens as us yet they derive pleasure in killing people. Nigerians need to pray hard. Your country has the highest number of prophets yet you record very nasty and sad events evryday. the leaders are trying their best, the citizens too should be responsible.

Ironic, painful but partially truthful. Our government should be blamed also. We have suffered more from bad governance than from any other factor. Obviously corrupt government official in the civil aviation endorse that plane and it’s management to carry on flying unworthy airplanes. There are still others not detected yet. With these officials, they will crash again and more lives will be lost. We need sanity in leadership

You are right my brother, some pple said its prayer that we need in dis country but I believe that all that is happening is not the will of God becos God said in His word ‘I knw my thought towards you, it is the thought of good and not of evil and for you to have an expected end’. what i think we are lackn in dis country is good leadership, all dis are happening becos our so called leaders are callous, ruthless, selfish, and wicked. dat is the reason why the life of their fellow human being does not mean anything to them as long as it is not their family that is involved, but fellow Nigerians, dnt worry becos God said in His word ‘behold, i am coming very soon and my reward is with me to pay everybody according to his deeds’ but d most painful thing is just dat we wn’t be there by the time the judgement of God wil come upon them and their family. I pray that the soul of the victims rests in perfect peace nd that God shoukd console the families of the deceased.

This is a tragedy at this time when Nigeria is being threatened by collapsing security, may the souls of these unlucky Nigerians “Rest in Peace”.
But Something must be done to prevent re-occurence. Jonathan should not only probe, but also punish those involved in the maintenance of this aircraft.
Nobody is safe in this country. Only God that we have and serve Who has chosen Nigerians as His own People that we hope in.

Not only in Nigeria that this happened. It happened too in other developed countries. What we are saying is that the service providers should ensure that their carriers are in good shape before flying.Pls they should always ensure maintenance of these planes. They should also ground old planes and purchase new ones after all they are making money from Nigerians,so they should be able to provide good services to their customers. Please my President Order the grounding of all planes in our airport.Madam Aviation Minister pls do something about these guys that are using old carriers to send people to their early grave.I am presently filled with grief,i lost my three friends in the ill-fated dana plane. One last thing, how competent are our pilots?God will help us.
