Lerato Tomato Umah weds British Broker Thurston Shaylor- BellaNaija 4Lerato Umah is a journalist (she was editor of Essentials Magazine, an entertainment and lifestyle insert in Leadership Newspaper, she writes for Guardian Life, amongst others), TV presenter on Good Morning Nigeria Show on Cool TV, restaurateur and food writer, who celebrated her traditional wedding to British insurance broker Thurston Shaylor on 8th of October 2015.

Thurston is an insurance broker in the UK. He is originally from Eastbourne in East Sussex. Lerato met Thurston in London as through one of Lerato’s dear friends who thought they would make the perfect match.

The traditional wedding ceremony celebrated blended cultures from Nigeria, England, Italy and Germany. The bride and groom dressed in Akwa Ibom outfits before changing into their Delta white outfits.

The  wedding took place in the bride’s father’s home in Lagos. The couple wore two different outfits; The bride in the regal ‘Oyonyo’ to represent the bride’s father’s Akwa Ibom heritage and groom wearing a traditional Akwa Ibom outfit with the wrapper tied at the waist, a walking stick, hat and white long shirt.

The second outfits represent the Bride’s mother’s Delta Ibo heritage with the ‘Akwa ocha’ meaning (white cloth) a traditional white fabric which the bride tied alongside her mother and aunties, while the groom was adorned in all white.

The couple will have their white wedding in the summer of 2016! Congrats to the Shaylors!

Your mom sounds like she has issues… But seriously you would be surprised how those who truly love us can adopt for our happiness.

You have raised a very important issue that is destroying a lot homes, especially in Nigeria…the idea of “we don’t marry from those places”…….a lot of young ladies and young men are stuck in unhappy marriages because the people they truly loved came from ” places we don’t marry from” these people are then forced to settle for the next best thing and end up leading miserable lives …. I actually prefer inter-cultural marriages…the wedding ceremonies are unique and in the marriage, you get to learn about a whole new culture, language, etc.

I’m trying to understand how her name is Lerato… I thought that was a traditional south African name.

I asked her the same thing on IG and all she said was that she’s a “Global citizen” so perhaps she changed her name because I’m South African and it’s definitely a South African name which means Love
