Saraki, El-Rufai, Others Pressured Buhari not to Pick me as Running Mate in 2015 – Bola Tinubu

Former Lagos governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) Chieftain, Bola Tinubu has said that Senate President/former governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki and Kaduna State governor/former FCT Minister Nasir El-Rufai, and other members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who defected to APC were the ones who worked against the plan to make him President Muhammadu Buhari’s running mate in the 2015 presidential election.

The revelation was made in the book, “Against the Run of Play – How an incumbent president was defeated in Nigeria,” written by the Chairman of the THISDAY Editorial Board, Olusegun Adeniyi

“What they (Saraki and others from the PDP) did behind my back was wrong. We always do things as a group. By the time they joined, we were already too far ahead in our processes but we accommodated them.

We agreed to take their state structures and subsume them into the part and they all had their opportunity to nominate the candidates of their choices for different political offices.

But they went behind to instigate Buhari and some other people in the party against me on the pretext of religion. That was not right. They were canvassing arguments that the Christians in the North would not vote for a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Nasir el-Rufai was also selling the same argument within the CPC (the defunct Congress for Progressive Change) because at that point, he still wanted to have Pastor Bakare brought in as Buhari’s running mate,” Tinubu was quoted as saying.

Adeniyi said that the Tinubu claimed that the governors and some senators led the charge to stop him from contesting with Muhammadu Buhari, an agreement he said they had reached when the APC was formed.

“With the former Kwara State governor, Senator Bukola Saraki leading the charge, APC governors and senators agreed to meet with Tinubu to convince him that a Muslim-Muslim ticket would not work.

At the meeting, Tinubu was non-committal, insisting that the issue of running mate should be discussed only after the primary. To him (Tinubu), it was more important that the governors worked to ensure the emergence of Buhari rather than dissipate energy on who would become the running mate.

Apparently unsatisfied, Senator Saraki as well as Governors Wamakko of Sokoto and Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara decided to meet Buhari especially when they had feelers that he could announce Tinubu’s name as running mate the moment he was declared the winner of the primary, thus bringing about another fait accompli.

The governors did a concise analysis of the situation for Buhari at the meeting. Each one told him about the Christian population in their states and how a Muslim-Muslim ticket would be perceived.

They added that with such a ticket, it would be difficult to sell Buhari to get many votes from the North-central, a geopolitical zone that was then at play.

The governors also stated that for the party to win, the running mate had to come from the South-west. Similar to Tinubu, Buhari made no commitment to them, but the governors were confident that they had driven the message home.

But the former military head of state had come a long way and he was not prepared to gamble away what appeared to be his best shot at the presidency after his previous disappointments,” Adeniyi wrote.

The book stated that Rotimi Amaechi (Former Rivers governor and incumbent Minister of Transportation) and Adams Oshiomhole‘s (former Edo governor) names were mentioned after the APC primaries of December 2014 where Buhari secured the ticket.

It added that many persons within the APC hierarchy had decided that the position should go to the South-west.

The book added that in consulting on the issue, Buhari had visited former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar at his Abuja home on Sunday December 14, 2014.

Adeniyi wrote:

The former number two man pledged his support to Buhari but warned against picking a Muslim running mate, as that could jeopardise the aspiration of the party.

On Monday 15th December 2014, Buhari called on Tinubu at his Asokoro residence in Abuja. It was not a pleasant meeting, according to those present.

The APC presidential candidate explained why he could not go with a Muslim-Muslim ticket. But Tinubu countered that the position was forced on Buhari by his (Tinubu’s) opponents within the coalition who were using religion as an excuse to edge him out.

Buhari persisted and asked Tinubu to nominate three persons. The South-west leader sent only one name: that of his former Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

You see!! i told y’all that political elites uses ethnicity and religion as an effective tools to gain Government patronage. They only perfected how to use it for their personal ends. But we must ask ourselves, why is it such an effective tool? Why are Nigerians gullible enough to buy such arguments all the time? Nigerians are frequently deceived by these fake tribal champions who get into government only to line their pockets.

One of the biggest problem facing Nigerian politics has always been that of tribalism and religion that’s eating deep into our national fabrics and sense of cultural co-existence as a nation, thinking that those is not an issue to deliberate on,is like thinking that the gods do not exist.Ethnicity and religion fanaticism is killing this nation.

The question still remains; Why did we allow tribalism and religion sentiments clouds our judgement as people and nation? Are y’all not tired of being used and dumped by politicians and traditional rulers for their selfish interest? Nigerians are the problems of Nigeria not the Government because an average Nigerian pay attention to the religion and ethnicity of the candidates during election.Gullible and daft Nigerians voted a cattle herder and are crying today.Nigerians are so dumb even the dumbest ass can ruleNigerians will always get what they deserve.

Unfortunately this is a sad reality in this country but the fact is that tribal/ethnic divisions exists amongst the people because well… It exist.

Just look at how the Fulani herdsmen are being treated under the presidency of our dear Fulani president and then compare it to the case of Niger Delta Militants.

We allow these things divide us because of our own actions/inactions

When the number 1 citizen of Nigeria is brazenly and unapologetically tribalistic in his governance what then do you expect from the people?

I wish Buhari chose you. The failure would hv been of epic proportions. But then l am glad he did not and won. Now we hv all seen Buhari’s nakedness. A man lacking in vision. A man living on past glory. Glory which was not even his to claim (The glory of accomplishments of years gone belong to the late Tunde Idiagbon) Buhari, a weak old man lacking in capacity to think at any level of abstraction talk less of at a high level. Buhari, a man lacking in integrity. A man who though has nothing to offer klings to power deceiving the citizenry rather than resign and spend his last days with loved ones, but, wants to die in office. A greedy man who claimed to be poor yet, educated his children abroad. A thieving man who solely had unfettered access to the treasury for six months without question. Buhari, the bigot and vindictive man who became blind and dumb when Northern herdsmen kill the defenceless christians and the 5% who did not voue for him. A Buhari that always found a reason not to visit the SE & SS..

Bola Thiefnubu, your day of humiliation is not now. Thank you for gifting Nigerians Buhari at least now Buhari has been mystified. Bloody vultures.

But I do think he would have done far far far better than what we have now.
He is a visioneer and that is what we need in Nigeria today. Someone who cares ENOUGH about OUR FUTURE, is well exposed in politics and modern practice of same and puts policies in place accordingly. Remember Fashola and Ambode so far have being execute his master plan for Lagos and see what Lagos is like.

Yes there has been argument as to how he makes money off his political Powers but hey I think that is life, one needs to be drastic to address Nigerian issues. (see where Jonathan’s attitude got us)

Moreover most of his wealth is used to drive/sponsor his political ideologies which has been the best for Nigeria so far otherwise in my opinion PDP would have auctioned us by now. mind you he could not have done that without funds.

He knows how to pick good leaders and commit them to his vision which is not bad at all and so far (but for lack of funds for the state governors that he nominated) you will see that they had great intentions at the inception.

himself and obasanjo really have good vision for the nation but people’s opinion of them are marred by sentiments

“Moreover most of his wealth is used to drive/sponsor his political ideologies which has been the best for Nigeria so far otherwise in my opinion”.

Don’t know if you have the answer to this question but what exactly are his political ideologies though? Is he a conservative, liberal, socialist, communist, nationalist, anarchist etc? Does he want more/less central government in our lives? These are the kind of questions we should be asking but none of our politicians have been clear on what exactly school thought they follow.
