dreamstime_m_73103334As the title suggests, this write up is primarily targeted at those deciding to pursue a masters in media and communication. Even though they are a lot of areas including PR and Advertising, etc, I choose to narrow my target audience further to those with keen interest in Journalism.

The decision to pursue a masters degree especially in the media is often the next step career wise for many hoping to increase their chances of employability, job prospects, pay and/or areas of specialisation. As random as this sounds, many people may not see the relevance of a media post graduate qualification, especially because in this part of the world, opportunities in entertainment journalism supersedes that of news reporting.

However, from experience, I can argue that a masters degree in media studies is the best step if one visualises a long term career in media. In addition, focusing on particular areas in media studies offers one the appropriate amount of exposure. Proper research in choosing the right course allows you map out the specific niche in journalism that defines one’s career choice.

Before pursuing a masters course, it is important to know ones area of interest. for instance for the bulk of my research work focused on development communication but theory and practical, for some who chooses to focus on production, consider if you would like the option of either radio or television, or one of them.

Let me reinstate the importance of seeking guidance from people who have done similar courses. Many have started masters programmes and then realising other options which they would have preferred. Similarly, the structure and teaching methods for schools differ, this implies that some universities are more practical while other theoretical. It is important to also choose schools based on the ratings, must schools have higher rating in particular courses.

Furthermore, consider how profitable the added knowledge from a post graduate degree is to your career path. Equally consider timing; whether you should gain work experience before commencing a masters, whether you should really do a post graduate or a attend a short term training.

Let me add that the masters learning period in itself is an interesting time of study which is more specific than an undergraduate degree in many cases. Given the opportunity to carry out the programme away from home is even more of a fun filled experience. So, good luck!
