Vision is a vivid image of what and where we aspire to be at some point in the future. It is what we see, and also the way in which we see. It is by the strength of our vision that we interpret the events of our life and circumstances. Our lives tend to move in the direction of our most dominant images. If you have a dominant image of failing at something—your relationship, your career, your business, your family—that’s your vision, and you are likely to fail in these areas. The converse happens to be true also.

A problem with many is the tendency to judge life based on circumstances (outside perception), rather than on the possibilities seen through the eyes of vision (inward perception). To live a life without vision is to be stuck in a constant rut, because the things we believe to be true determine the way in which we interpret life.. Helen Keller who was a famous American activist, speaker, and author, was blind and deaf. She was asked what could be worse than being blind, and she is noted to have said, “The most pathetic person in the world is some one who has sight but no vision.” To have a vision of success and a fulfilled life is to set yourself up for a liberating life.

Success in life starts with a vision. First recognize where you are in life and what your innate abilities are. Identify the alignment between your abilities, talents, and passion is to get a sense of your purpose. Read more on discovering purpose. To have a vision for your purpose in life and every aspect of your life is a major determinant of what your success will be.

To have a compelling vision can totally transform your life. But staying invested in them can be extremely difficult when adverse situations present. Here are a few things you can do to keep your vision clear, and continually remain passionate about it.

Write it down
Vision starts in one’s imagination, therefore, you must define a clear picture of what you desire your life to be, and what your aspirations are. Once the first glimpse of this image is captured in your heart, the first part of accomplishing it is to take it from the unseen world and bring it into the natural realm. You do this by writing down the vision. When you articulate your vision on paper, you are making what was once an intangible product of your imagination into this material world where others can capture with their own hearts. Don’t stop at writing only, look for props that will help you visualize what you desire, such as pictures, miniature models, blueprints etc.

Review them daily
When you review your dreams, vision and aspirations daily, you make them stronger within you. You are more likely to arrive at a destination when you have clear directions and a clear sense of where you are going to. Reviewing what you have penned down daily helps clarify what it is you desire. The stronger your vision is in your heart, the more you are subconsciously led to people, places and situations that will help your vision become a reality. You become a magnet to the various pieces of the puzzle to your success. As I stated earlier, never forget that your life moves in the direction of your most dominant image.

Speak what you see out loud
There is power in affirmations and the spoken word. The words we speak today are what we use to make transactions for the quality of our future. You can tell a person’s state of mind by listening to the words that he or she speaks. A successful person will speak words that point to opportunity, possibilities, hope, faith and victory, despite whatever circumstance he or she may be in. Someone once said that “every spoken word arouses our self-will.” This is filled with truth. As you speak out loud with conviction and confidence your vision, your desire to press on and achieve is made stronger and stronger. Never speak against your vision irrespective of what is going on around you. Hold on tight to the image you see within you and speak them until people and your environment catches the image and begins to work with you.

Set corresponding goals
Now that you have a clear picture of where you are going and what you aspire to, you need a road map to get there. The process of goal setting is the process of plotting your journey to seeing your vision become a reality. Start with setting goals in small increments, complete with time, dates, amount, and some details.  Evaluate where you are versus where you need to be and identify what the next steps are. Based on your evaluation, set a goal with a positive statement to get you to the next phase.

Take persistent action
It’s simple, do what you have written down and be consistent. Persistence is a major key to break through. Planning without action does no good. Be sure to take the first step and remain persistent until your vision becomes a reality. Calvin Coolidge said, “Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”
