Depotting - Bellanaija - June2014006The female bag can be a mess sometimes.

Even I dread the end of the day when I have to look through my bag for my keys; I stumble on all types of things from those I lost to others I didn’t know were there.

The most likely of things I stumble on? My makeup. With nothing less than 2 powders, loads of lip glosses & lipsticks and most of my eye shadow pallets (still trying to figure out why I carry them around), my bag can be a mine field. So what solution can be used to give your bag some space? Depotting!

This is a technique that has been in the industry for a while now, and with many other beauty tricks, there is that one time where it becomes wildly popular. Depotting can be used on a number of things, but today we are going to talk about how to depot your beauty products.

Depotting beauty produts is basically transferring your makeup from its original package to a more conducive package that can help organize your makeup bag. Apart from it being more practical, it helps you combine your favourite makeup, like eyeshadows, blushes and lip sticks, into one practical packaging; and helps you manage your makeup refills so that you can carry it around easily.

So how does depotting work? The basic technique usually involves applying heat to the bottom of the container to help it come out. It can be done to a number of products, however, it does not apply to all products and brands. While some brand products may pop out easily, others might need a little more care.

Eyeshadows can be depotted easily because they are contained in a different container apart from the outer pack; and lipsticks don’t have that many active ingredients that easily react to foreign plastics etc. Care needs to be taken when transferring foundations and concealers however, unless they come in similar packages. They have very active ingredients and can react to a different package and affect your skin.

There are a few other rules you should have in mind;

1. Try depotting old products or products you no longer use. This way you can get the technique you are most comfortable with down to a science.
2. Always buy high-quality palettes. This is so you can be sure your products, and the process will be safe.
3. There are risks involved in this process, so please be advised to keep the area you are working with neat and conducive. Remember the products will eventually end up on your face.
