RIP…16 Year Old Nigerian-Irish Football Star Collapses & Passes Away During a Match

It’s always sad to hear news about young lives cut short by horrible tragedy. Shetemi Ayetigbo, an Ireland-based 16-year-old football star who appears to be of Nigerian parentage, collapsed and died while playing during a football match on Sunday.

Ayetigbo played for the U-16 division of North Dublin side Belvedere Football Club. The unfortunate incident occurred when his team was playing in a league match against rivals St Kevin’s Boys.

Speaking on Ayetigbo’s death, an eyewitness told Irish Mirror:

“There was no incident, any attack. The young lad was playing, and he just dropped on the pitch. It was around 25 to 30 minutes into the game. A number of people rushed to his side straight away to give him first aid, as there was a defibrillator at the grounds. An ambulance came, and paramedics tried to treat him there. But he couldn’t be saved.

They then took his body to the hospital. The match was cancelled. Everyone was in shock. The young players, staff, and supporters had never witnessed anything like that on a football pitch. There were a good few people watching the match because it was the last game of the season.”

The cause of death is yet to be identified, however; a postmortem was said to have been set to take place yesterday.

Judging from results released so far, Shetemi may have suffered from a form of the sudden death syndrome.

He may have had an underlying heart problem which went unnoticed and that caused a cardiac arrest. Very sad. It is for this reason that sports people/people who partake in physical activities are routinely checked and where applicable are fitted with a defibrillator. Fabrice Muamba has been going round schools in the UK to highlight the issue, to get people to check their hearts and also to promote the use of defibrillators.

May his soul rest in perfect peace and may the GOOD LORD comfort and console his family. Really sad. I can’t imagine the pain they are passing through right now. I am not sure about sudden death syndrome, but I know Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or (HOCM) is the most common cause of death in young athletes..

This is the second youth to die in Dublin in May. And he is also the second footballer that died while playing a football match in less that a year, sad part is that it was on his mum’s birthday and the family were getting ready to go to the party.
May his soul rest in peace and may all the other souls lost rest in peace.
