If you are reading this, it means you have not just been born, but you have also grown to the point where you can browse and read. That means it must have been seven years or more since I wrote you this letter.

You see, I started thinking of you a long time before I met and subsequently got married to your mother. That means that I have made a lot of plans to secure your future, and give you a good platform to pursue that future.

It equally means that your mother and I made a lot of decisions concerning you even before you were born.

We understand that God sent you through us, and not to us, so we decided to make your ‘passage’ the best anybody can ask for.

My Promise to you

I will create time in spite of my busy schedule to teach and help you imbibe the values that I believe in.

I will teach you to be honest, and never to take what doesn’t belong to you. I will teach you to be disciplined, not to use offensive words, and to be content. You will also have to learn how to respect your elders, to be diligent, to read and enjoy reading.

Your mother and I will teach you to be kind, to treat everyone with equity without prejudice in spite of class, sex, race or religion. And you will equally have to learn to forgive those who offend you, and that there are things that you shouldn’t do because of that word ‘justice’.

As a Christian, I will to teach you guys the ways of the Lord, and not assume that they are taught in church.

I will make out time to tell you about grace, sin, repentance, redemption, judgement, then baptism, the Holy Ghost, faith, healing, and other tenets I believe in.

Secondly, I will make out time to pray for you.

I will start praying for you from conception, laying my hands on your mummy’s tummy and making decrees about your future. I will not sit back and watch things happen.

I will take the bull by the horn, and set things straight even before you are born. And I will not stop until I die.

I understand that there are battles you little ones can’t fight on your own so I will be there for you to help you clear the bushes until you can stand on your own. On my honor, as your daddy, I will not slack.

Also, I will love you. You will never have a reason to doubt our love. I will take care of you and constantly remind you of how much you are loved.

I will nurture you to the best of my ability. And even when you need to be corrected, I will do so in love.

If you make a mistake, I will not throw you to the dogs. I will stand by you, rebuke you, but never allow you to doubt my love. Even if you become teenagers, and seem rebellious, I will be patient, and continue loving you as God gives me grace.

In addition, I will not forget to show you how to live. I will not be a ruler that just tells you what to do, I will be a leader, and show you by my own life how you must live.

I will make sure I live a life that you will see and be willing to emulate. For instance, I will love your mother and treat her like a queen. I will create an atmosphere of love for you to grow in so that when you think of marriage, you will be excited and not scared.

Furthermore, I will train you.

I will make you understand that there are two kinds of pain in life: the pain of discipline, and the pain of regret. I will let you go through adequate pain whenever you refuse or forget to live as disciplined as you should.

I will never hesitate to correct you in love. I will rebuke, spank, and mete out any other type of punishment necessary depending on the offence. I will let you know that though daddy loves you, he will not hesitate to punish you if you mess up, and that he does it because he loves you.

Lastly, I will be a part of your lives, so I will know the friends that you keep. I will be your friend and listen to your gists no matter how silly they seem. I will give you my listening ear, advise you, and not judge you when for instance, you need to talk about your latest crush.

I will let you win when we play scrabble, whot, ludo monopoly, chess or table tennis. I will watch Barney and sing kids’ songs with you. We will go on vacations together, go swimming together, have family picnics and wear matching ‘swagalicious’ outfits for outings.

I will be there when you celebrate your birthdays, and I will endeavor to be present in your special events, especially graduations, prize giving days, etc.

I know that children grow up too fast, so for the little time I have you under me, I will be there, going through life with you.

For instance, I will comfort and encourage you when you have your first bicycle fall. And I will definitely be present to tease you when your teeth start falling off. I will guide you if you wish to experiment with starting a business. I will read your essays and poems, help with your science projects and view your art works.

You see, daddy and mummy’s lives will get busier by the day. But we will be wise enough to know that no amount of success can be compared to looking at you guys after about thirty years and smiling happily because we did a great job.

Well, I will stop here…temporarily. Daddy needs to get busier with making money so that you and mummy will not lack any good thing.

So take care of yourselves my cute little angels.

With love from,

Daddy.
