Kissing Frogs

We all know the tale about the princess who had to kiss a frog in order to turn him in to a prince. This one story has spurned a thousand other stories about being patient in love, and understanding the bumpy roads we face as we journey towards true love. While in the movie, the princess was lucky to kiss just one frog and have him turn into her prince charming, in real life, we have to kiss many frogs, or kiss the same frog many times, before he turns into a prince.

Sometimes, we are in such a hurry to meet the ‘one’, we fail to appreciate the other frogs we meet on the way and how they mature us, for our eventual prince. So this article is dedicated to the ladies who have kissed their own fair share of frogs, and the frogs who have received those kisses.

The First Frog:

The first frog is the first guy we ever date. If he was around our age, or you dated in secondary school or during your teenage years, he can usually be termed “the innocent frog” or the “I learnt all about love from the movies” frog. He sent little notes through his sister and you spent ages talking on the phone about nothing in particular. He is the frog that gives some sort of hope, teaches you a little about romance and in some cases, sets your whole world alight! When you look back on this frog, you can’t help but smile at the naiveté of it all. But you recognize the role he played in shaping you.

The Insignificant Frog:

This is the frog that you may not even remember dating, or the one you can’t believe you ever dated. He was the clingy frog; the one that called too much, wrote too many poems and bought way too many lunches for you and your friends. You and your friends may also have various mean and funny names which you used to describe this frog. This is not normally the frog that you fall in love with, but he teaches you how you deserve to be treated and as a result, you hold future frogs to this higher standard.

The Hopeless Frog:

In this case, it is not the frog that is hopeless but the situation surrounding your relationship with the frog that is. In my case, my hopeless frog was 4 inches shorter than me, of a different religion but similar genotype-AS, had a son and was soon to be relocating to a different country. It was like someone took my list and turned it on its head. As hopeless as this situation sounds, there is always some type of unexplainable attachment to this frog and the hopelessness the situation brings. Whether this attachment is love, confusion or desperation depends on the people involved but in most cases it is this very hopelessness that will send you running to the hills. For those who manage to persevere, theirs will be a story of patience and enduring love told and retold by friends and loved ones.

The Charismatic Frog:

When winter rolls around, so does the flu. I’m a fan of Night Nurse; it helps soothe the terrible cough and eases the blocked nose. It comes with warning labels, “do no operate heavy machinery” or something similar. It is my belief that this frog should come with warning labels; “will impair your judgment.” This frog is a fountain of charisma. His larger than life persona is an inferno which engulfs any woman within a 50 mile radius.
With this frog, it is usually style over substance. However, there are many charismatic frogs with promise. But promise or not, you will forgive this frog for many a transgression, usually the same one.

The “Best Friend” Frog:

People say that if you marry your best friend, you are lucky. With this frog you can be you, because he KNOWS you, you can fast forward straight to comfortable. Being with him is easy; it feels like you have been together forever. All of a sudden forever doesn’t seem enough. He teaches you to be yourself in relationships. The fact that he knows you so well may remove any mystery from your relationship but with him the positives far outweigh the negatives.

There are more frogs than the ones I’ve mentioned above, the list of possible frogs is endless. I am sure we all have more than our own fair share of frog kissing stories, so if you think I’ve missed any frogs out, please share them with us.

Regardless of the amount of frogs we’ve kissed, the trick here is to remember that in life, the fairy tale ending you desire is what you make of it. This is because meeting the right frog is just the beginning, but one day, after much hard work and several kisses later, you will look at your frog and see the faint silhouette of a crown, sitting crookedly on his head.

lol, it’s based on the childrens story the princess and the frog… I guess the writer likens romantic relationships to it to give a picture of what girls have to go through to finally meet their “prince”

Er, obviously you have never been kissed (by frog or human) Must she write about kissing”men” before you realize ‘frog’ is a figure of speech.
As said in the previous article, some of you never get it, it’s beyond your scope of intelligence 😛

    The Frog with warts

The frog that is your secret shame, the one you’d never admit to anyone that you dated. The one that you’d cross the road to avoid talking to. This frog taught you to place a higher value on your own self and made you eternally grateful that forgs don’t talk.

“SUSTAINABLE FROG” This frog comes before your best friend frog, lets say when you have embraced the world and you are about to start making a meaning out of life on your own, this frog comes in handy and tend to shoulder the responsibility, it can come in various forms and sizes, and though its flamboyancy may be beyond your scope, you tend to play along until you finally meet your best friend frog and then you think of how to disentangle yourself, sometimes the end thereof maybe memorable or sour.

This write up put a smile on my face. I’ve certainly kissed my fair share of frogs, and still kissing them! Presently, there’s the “best friend frog”, “wise frog”, and “would you get over yourself already frog”. Perhaps one of them will become prince charming soon enough, all this kissing don tire me 🙂
BTW there’s another frog I’ld like to add the “Oh no, you didn’t just kiss that frog!” As in gosh what was I thinking!

    March 31, 2011 at 9:16 pm

you’ll only kiss most of all these type frogs if u want to. In the princess and the frog story, the princess kissed only one, just one frog didnt she? i think you’ll only kiss all these type of frog if you are desperately searching for the ‘one’. Ladies go easy aiight?

    • Moi

      April 1, 2011 at 8:00 am

Ermm seriously…so ur basically saying like the princess, girls will only date one guy in their whole life and get married?! *eyebrow raised*.hmmph

    • Ready

      April 2, 2011 at 7:10 pm

Lol…no mind them. I would bet good money that the princess was too young when she kissed that one frog, and she only used him as an escape route from her boring monotonous life. I’m pretty sure if she could hit the reset button, she would have…and then kissed about 4 more frogs just to make sure that he’s got all the qualities she wants. I’m just sayin’….

    The Mechanic Frog
This frog “changes your oil” when it is due and you are still waiting for best friend frog. After the oil change, everyone answer’s their father’s name. Don’t claim me in public, I won’t claim you. Just those monthly text messages and all parties know what’s up. Just don’t go catching feelings and he might be one of the best frogs you ever kissed 🙂

My two cents. Pls do not judge me. Thank you. Lol

Damn, u took the words right outta my mouth. Your description of The Mechanic Frog is so apt and on point. LMAO @ everyone bears their father’s name(literally).lol. I don tire for the mechanic frog cos he’s also the charismatic one and the one I’m hoping to be best friend frog. He has potentials, just not ready to change the oil yet. SMH

    • indomie

      April 1, 2011 at 3:30 pm

Abort. Abort. You cannot change the terms of your agreement midway. You cannot hope he will become best friend frog. Heres why: You limit yourself from meeting the real best friend frog because you start confusing an oil change with a total engine replacement with a life-time warranty. No. No. No. You will hurt yourself because the possibility is real that one day Mechanic frog will be kissed by his best friend frog princess and you will be left without any more oil changes, a failed engine, not to mention a broken heart. Goodluck.

      April 2, 2011 at 12:00 am

As in….Indomie mehn, u seem too know too much about the Mechanic frogs. U r making sense but see, in this case, the parties intend to make oil changes as time progresses. Only that one mechanic is a bit too laid-back for our liking. There was really no mutual agreement that the Mechanic will be the Mechanic. lol. He was always meant to be the best friend frog but certain circumstances are in way of a full oil change. Having said that, I know I’m cutting him a lot of slack so yeah, u could be right to say abort! For now, I’ve refused to grant him any further oil change….till he proves that he’s ready to change the engine and even the car sef. When that will be, time will tell. It’s just unfortunate that the other frogs lurking around are the insignificant frog and the “good-reliable-friends-but-don’t-make-my-heart-beat” frogs. Ya dig?
      Loving this frog ish.hehehe

Guys maybe you need to watch “Madeas Big Happy Family”, the play NOT the movie. Its fully available on youtube. In Clip 6 o r7 , she said (using the frog interpretation) sths we have to kiss many frogs to get to that prince charming. And no matter how the frogs hurt you, keep kissing, cos when u get to your prince charming, you would look back at all these frogs and say, thank you, you taught me something.
So ladies, pls dont give up kissing these useless frogs, cos our prince charming is just around the corner..

And not to forget good old Kermit Frog.

This is a smart, hardworking, happy-go-lucky, easy going professional frog who leaves by the shallow part of the pond (River Niger). Kermit should be afraid. He is about to be kissed by a “girl” who builds castles in the sky, calling herself a princess. The girl wears fake Peruvian/Brazilian weaves, pancakes her features with mascara, is shallow, pesters different frogs for money, sleeps with rich frogs for cash, is materialistic to the core, is only interested in fashion, new trends and E!, and has kissed most of the frogs in Lagos and Abuja.

She fancies Kermit a little but would rather sow her wild oats, attending all the parties, hitting the club and painting the town red. She prefers a rich frogs and big-boy toads (like Baron Green-back of Dangermouse Cartoons series) to settle with, and does not want to give young and upcoming frogs a chance. When she realises that she is getting a bit old, and has not been hitched , she desperately tries to hook up with naive Kermit, so that they can start popping tadpoles.

And you what is the worst thing? She thinks she is a princess, but the truth prevails when she looks at the mirror every night, after undressing.

She is just plain old Miss Piggy.

If guys are frogs, then girls must be ugly ducklins…:p just playing devil’s advocate, afterall some men have to contend with a whole lot of stuff while playing the field. if girls are not ugly ducklins, perhaps they’re ugly step sisters – one day he’ll get his Cindarella …

Lol…you have a point. Women will have to accept being reduced to metaphors too…it is what it is. @ Justin, guy…men can be frogs, dogs, aliens, whatever. It’s a light-hearted take on relationships not a hard-hitting psychological expose.

  64. Naomi

    April 1, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Frogs…. I’ve had enough. Just when I thot the frog I’m presently kissing is my prince, he showed me he’s just a frog for the good times, things get hard and he’s gone, still crying over him, but I’m be fine. No kissin for now, too hurt.

  65. Justin

    April 1, 2011 at 5:38 pm

Typical write up written by a woman, a lot of emotional and sentimental thoughts all over the place. I’m particularly unimpressed about the romance with frogs simply because it comes from one fairy tale book. Men are men and not frogs. The metaphor is just not appropriate.

lol, 4 real it is risky business when u have a broken down engine at the end and ur mechanic is uncapable to deal with the situation, i agree abort abort abort, be sure that there are no confusions and everything is straight up all the time, not literally!!! lol

      LWKMD @ not literally.
All I can think of is the guy in the movie “ladies men”.
I think this article might as well have taken the movie and created different frogs of all characters except “mama’s boy frog”: The one that wants to marry someone EXACTLY “like” his mother. No one can ever be exactly like your mother. Grow up. #rantover.

frogs eh! Well, i think u all are been 1sided and biased on this issue but since is a lady’s thing, we ll b mute. Do you all think about the pains of waiting 4 d right princes just 4 dat last first kiss? The pains, diss-apoint-ments, regrets, etc etc……well, we ll just keep kissing, croaking and wwaatttiiiinnnggg.

Maybe you ladies should worship God in truth and spirit, and wait on Him to provide your soulmate instead of kissing every tom, dick and harry.

All comes about as a result of how you girls expose your simplicity and unseriousness to boys with whom you are or about to be in love … Malawi boy reveal this to girls of the cosmos.
