Armed Robbers Invade Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos Killing Two Policemen

Published

 on

A robbery incident which led to the death of two policemen at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Wednesday night has exposed the porous security network at the nation’s busiest Airport.  The deadly looking robbers, numbering over 10, beat the airport security network to unleash terror on the entire airport. They also made away with huge amount of foreign currencies from some bureau-de-change operators.

Tribune reports that the armed robbers had entered the airport through the terminal zero, proceeded to the arrival hall and penetrated the departure hall of the terminal.

The robbers reportedly trailed a large amount of money transported in a bullion van en route to Dubai to the departure lounge, they struck as as soon as the monies were carried in bags to the departure lounge.

A witness told Tribune that on entering the terminal, the armed robbers ordered all the users of the airport to lie down while those who refused to comply were shot at.

According to Punch, the robbers were said to have been engaged in a gun duel for about 30 minutes by policemen attached to the airport. The gunfight, it was learnt, resulted in the death of two policemen and one armed robber, who was said to have tied local magical bands all over his arms and body.

The General Manager, Corporate Communications at the Airport, Yakubu Dati, confirmed the robbery.

Cases of diamonds where stolen alright. But was the airport stormed by armed robbers wearing juju? Let us not ignorantly compare two distinct situations. People steal everywhere and thats a fact. Armed robbers stormed an airport and for 30 mins engaged in a gun fight with police and you talking about cases of diamond being stolen. Please this is a big disgrace and it is worth criticising. It is a prime example of the fact that security in this country is absolutely non existent. We would criticise o. Shame shame shame!

Yes and your point is accepted that it could happen anywhere. However, to counter that same point, if it happened in some of those countries in Europe, you’ll find that detailed investigations are begun immediately – detectives and teams get assigned, everyone connected to what happened (airport staff, passengers, etc) will be questioned extensively, CCTV footage is examined, a database of known jewellery thieves will be checked, jewellery traders are notified so that any rogue diamonds can be traced when they pop up, specialists are brought in, etc. etc. etc.

In your dear Nigeria, another group of armed robbers will plan the same heist, knowing fully well they can get away with it. However, we can afford to build up a competent police and security force because we have the resources but we’ve simply refused to apply those resources to anything that’s good for this country. So I’m going to keep saying “big shame to Nigeria” because our situation is a massive disgrace.

Couldn’t have said it better. And people are so quick to jump on the “oh it happens in other countries” bandwagon when it comes to bad/negative incidents, but why do we only always have to copy/imbibe/compare ourselves with the bad things that happen in other countries and not the good/positive things? What about fair and transparent elections; accountability in government; portable water supply; constant electricity; a just police and judicial system; good roads and infrastructure; a viable education system; justice for victims of sexual and physical abuse; justice for victims of jungle justice; arrest and prosecution of political thieves and fraudsters, etc…Don’t these things happen in other countries too?

I remember this happened at the same airport in 1993. Then the robbers didnt shoot anyone but a white man who had just arrived collapsed and died in the ensuing chaos!
Last year, after picking my mom from that same airport at night, as we were making the turn by the toll gate we saw people running from the Isolo end shouting “armed robber, armed robber”. Apparently we were told some robbers were heading towards the airport and shooting sporadically in the air. We had to turn round and drive into the cargo section to wait till everything had died down.
Security…or rather the lack of it is a huge issue in this country, yet we continually squander billions on phones for farmers and other such insulting schemes.
    Nigeria we hail thee!

ALL THOSE AGBERO AT THE AIRPORT SHOULD BE FLUSHED OUT, THEY ARE THE INFORMATE TO ROBBERS, ANY TIME I COME TO THE COUNTRY I AM ALWAYS AFRAID OF ALL THOSE PEOPLE, YOU CANT SEE ANYONE WHO IS NOT WORKING AT THE AIRPORT IN THE AIRPORT WHEN YOU FLY TO LONDON OR AMERICA, NO ONE SHOULD BE AT THE AIRPORT ENVIRONMENT IF YOU ARE NOT COMING TO PICK SOMEONE, THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD PROVIDE 3-4 CHECKING GATE THAT ONE MUST DO PROPER CHECK BEFORE HE ALL SHE CAN DRIVE IN AND OUT OF THE AIRPORT. THAT IS MY SUGGESTION.

It’s unfortunate that the this incident happened at the airport, but on the other hand, I am happy that such huge amount of physical cash did not get out of the country. My prayer is that, let God just look at this long suffered Nigeria, have mercy and deliver it from the hand of these dybolic and criminal politicians.

If not whoever it is that cannot wire such an amount has a skeleton or 2 hiding and its a rotten smell!!! P.S -all those robbers must definately all be irrate unemployed graduates. March 14, 2013 at 7:02 pm

A Frightening experience for all airport users who where unfortunate to be at the scene at the time, shame on those comparing the incident with that of Belgium, my question to them is, how many shots was fired and how many people died in Belgium, never compare tactical planning to callous robbery and wanton attacks. its an outrage people!!! and a sure disgrace not only to the robbers for doing such dastardly act, but to us all as a nation, a failed nation at that. A nation where funds are siphoned out in cash and in sacks with pure impunity, a nation that is continually been raped repeatedly by just a handful of miscreants, nobody’s and petty thieves under the guise of leadership, a nation where you beat the citizens and tell them not to cry, yet I read comment comparing the so called Nigeria, the supposed ‘giants of what? with countries where justice, peace, security, social welfare and the rights of citizens are upheld. Unfortunately, this trend of superfluous attributes to a disjointed nation is highly and un-equivocally misplaced.

    • Denis Ray

      March 14, 2013 at 7:28 pm

furthermore , it is the view of this write, or rather, questions that needs to be pondered on, who are these robbers? how did they get the info of monies been carted away from the country? if these so called robbers are just ordinary robbers, dont you think they would have killed more than two policemen? are they really robbers or security personnel of some sort? how did they get away? is the airport not littered with policemen as usual? the dead robber, has he been identified? does he have a home, a family friends and cronies?
These are serious questions that should be looked at with an eagle eyes, if these questions are answered then we have our robbers, the informant and the grand thieves.
