Suspected Islamist militants attacked Mpeketoni, a coastal town in Kenya, leaving 48 dead.
The area attacked is in the heart of Kenya’s tourism industry, Al Jazeera reports.
Eyewitnesses told BBC that the invaders hijacked a van, then proceeded to attack various location across the city.
In an invasion that lasted for several hours, the militants set fire to hotels, police stations, restaurants, banks, and government offices.
The attack occurred on Sunday evening, as residents were watching a World Cup match on television.
