This is an example of the dumbing down of Bella Naija I typed about a while ago.

Re-her NB comment, that’s quite dim. It would have been better if she had typed that her command of the English language is not her forte.

Being Nigerian should not excuse the bad use of tenses and being British is not commensurate with having a good command of the language.

She contradicted herself when she typed along the lines of “chase him home but if you want to collect money it’s not a bad thing.” In a way, she is supporting what she is telling people not to support.

My own English isn’t that great, but I can see at least one fail in this your sentence:
“It would have been better if she had typed that her command of the English language is not her forte.”
Your sentence is amusingly ironic, given that you used a sentence that shows an ailing command of the English Language to chastise someone else for their lack of said command.

    • Alero

      October 23, 2014 at 9:17 am

OgeAdiro, this is just for knowledge purpose: Forte means strong point. Therefore,”It would have been better if she had typed that her command of the English language is not her forte.” , means that Toyin would have typed that English language isn’t her (Toyin’s) strong point. Like I said , for knowledge purpose. It does not remove or add value to Toyin’s message.

E don tey wey I take WAEC and English no be my 1st language but if I remember correctly, “Her command of the English language is not her forte.” = Fail. “Command of the English language is not her forte.” = Correct.

Dis woman is not in the English side of Nollywood. Aunty you have smart phone why have you not using it to spelling and grammar sheck your gbati gbati tape-learnt english. O boy but some people can kill language sha. If language be person dis aunty for be serial killer. She kill, kill, kill d tin die HAHAHA. my favourite part was : “u knw a man is married bt shed crocodile tears wen he’s going home to meet his wife n kids, and men hates to see women in tears” sooo, the problem is that the girl is crying not that he is hoeing…aah, I see. By the way, women that fight runs girls should suck on lemon because you can’t fight someone for sleeping with your man, that girl no be your friend, she no be your cousin or anything related to you. fight your ashewo husband wey dey follow everything in skirts. Get your anger straight, some people don’t even know who to be angry at or what is making them angry sef.

Ps: I don’t support husband snatchers o but you can’t snatch a human being unless you kidnap them. A man goes for what he wants, train your dog in the way of fidelity that he may not depart from it.

    1) why does this lady always look choked or constipated?
    2) I get ur point with the several toxic characteristics of feminine interaction but the excuses u present for men in your little rant show how mentally suppressed u are.
its a pity most of these ladies think like this. A man is not a stray dog. Hold them accountable for their actions. If ur man cheats, it is not the silly girl u should blame;she is acting on her own looseness, that one is sure. BUT out of allllllllll the men, y ur husband gree? Abi u think he is the first she has supposedly seduced? (Seeing as all cheating men in this our country were seduced and they are incapable of doing the chasing). We have set the bar so low for nigerian men and until we learn to understand that they are humans capable of self control and not dogs thatl hump anything in heat, we will continue to dumb them down with our encouragement of the regression of their sense of responsibility.

I’m sorry Aunty, there’s nothing like I’m Nigerian, not British…you live in 2014 not 1014–we live in a global village, you know that your english get leprosy and you’re not holding on to the hem of Jesus Christ to change your situation. Is not funny o, better go and register for SS 2 english lessons. You need to be able to converse in the lingua franca of our economic community. Please aunty.

this is really harsh. Kindly note that access to good education in Nigeria is a big issue. I must also state this fact to you “IQ and command of English are mutually exclusive” She has the required IQ to reason out the issue at hand although her command of English is not perfect . Nevertheless get the message and don’t water down her self esteem. I’m sure if she was told to express herself in her mother tongue “Yoruba” the message will be more articulate . Please be nice!

    • Ife

It is “IT’S not funny”, not “IS not funny. Remember to add the “T” and the apostrophe, especially when trying to correct another’s tenses to ridicule the fellow who has publicly accepted her weaknesses in the command of the language. Thank me later.

  18. Neharra

    October 22, 2014 at 3:04 pm

Six out of nine of those points were reiterated. PLEASE women men are not children!! They need to be held accountable for their actions. No woman out there owes you anything…not even your own sister or mother. A committed relationship is between a man and a woman (with the exception of gay couples off course lol) thus if either party decides to stray, they are fully responsible. Stop blaming other women because you decided to date and stay with a dog.

    • Baby

      October 22, 2014 at 4:03 pm

Yes men are dogs but why encourage them? If more women said no to them when they come they will have no choice but to use their dicks only at home……that is what she is saying not blaming women….as for me I can never go and fight the other woman cos u don’t owe me anything, but if u dare to invade my personal space then u get it… she said some women even go as far as calling the wife to vomit rubbish……men and marriage are overrated…

    • benny

      October 22, 2014 at 4:55 pm

Sorry for ur terrible experiences and bad examples set for you but men are not dogs. You cannot continue to promote this belief and let them run with the fact that u expect so little of them; u have set the bar so low and they are living down to it. Desperation shouldn’t lead most of you to accepting anomalies. Men are not dogs, they are humans with the knowledge of right and wrong and the ability to choose.

Madam Toyin Aimakhu, if you aren’t British then you should have written your thoughts down in your native dialect or better yet, find someone who paid attention when they were teaching ABC in school to write it for you. This is a shame and your facetious “I am Nigerian and not British” at the end was not cute, it simply shows that you refuse to take responsibility for your shortcoming. Wole Soyinka is Nigerian, not British BUT he’s managed to gain full command of the language to where he was rewarded for it with a Nobel. Do NOT insult the rest of us Nigerians who paid attention in English classes and learned the required language of the country in which like you, we were born and raised. Even with a smart phone you are writing nonsense then have the nerve to excuse it. Get a tutor and go back to basics, there is no shame in self improvement. I really hope you don’t speak as horribly as you write. I would hope that maybe constant texting and twittering has ruined a skill I hope you possessed previously.

As for your complaint about women “snatching” other women’s men, this is an old story. How about not chastising women for once, be original and write a piece about MEN who can’t keep their penis’ in their pants, huh? How about writing a piece about grown men who seem to be hypnotized by boobs to the point of forgetting THE VOWS THEY TOOK before GOD and their family to be true? STOP BLAMING WOMEN, while there are some who are brazen in their pursuit, there are many more who don’t even know sometimes that these men are marry but accept whatever story is being peddled to them. You are part of the problem. It takes two to tango, if you blame the women then equal blame must be apportioned to the men as well.

      October 22, 2014 at 4:28 pm

Abeg… All you “over-sabi” people should take a chill pill. She acts in YORUBA movies, not English. This wasn’t written as an English essay or an article in a newspaper and she excused herself . How many of the “owners “of the language speak or write it that well anyway.
Now, over to the subject of the write-up, this is just a display of the typical silly Nigerian way of absolving men of their responsibilities. “They are weak”, what sort of nonsense is that? A cheat is a cheat is a cheat, let’s call a spade a spade.

    • Naveah

      October 22, 2014 at 4:56 pm

Omotola, Genevieve and many others including Ramsey Nouah have acted in films whereby they needed to speak Yoruba. You wrote your rebuttal using good grammar. Why are you excusing her? Yes, sure it isn’t a class report and it may not be a piece written for a newspaper BUT it is an article on a blog read by the same amount of people who read newspapers. If she didn’t want anyone to criticize it, she should have written out her feelings in her diary and kept it personal. There will be no growth without correction.

Please not being British is not an excuse to not be able to type one sentence with no grammatical error. English is the lingua Franca in Nigeria! I’m not saying you should know the entire dictionary but just one good sentence? Haba! It’s unacceptable please. Even if you don’t know, please learn and don’t give the excuse of not being British .

That there are people defending her writing is sad. Later we will be upset when foreigners ask if we speak Nigerian. The lingua franca is English. She attended Nigerian schools, she is a celebrity. And this is the result of all that??? Haba

Okay so your husband strays and you want to get angry at the other woman, ummm…nah, it doesnt work that way. You seem to be projecting your anger at the wrong person. Unless the other woman is your friend or relative, they owe you no loyalty, only your husband does. He took the vows to forsake all others, and also signed a marriage contract with you, so blame him, and not the “other woman.” Yes we women have a tendency to be jealous towards our counterparts, but one thing you should know is that any friend of yours that envies and wants the way your life or your marriage is not a true friend; for they would never be truly happy for you. Infact you should keep more than an arms lenght from them, or better keep an eye on them.

Well, that sounds naive to me , I mean concerning what she said about her english.being a nigerian does not have anything to do with you not speaking good english.nigerians have to understand that they are not the only ones visiting their sites.people from other countries now read african news and get information about africa from mostly nigerian and south african sites.i think that is time for nigeria to hire native speakers like the asians are doing right now to teach english in nigeria so that they can be able to speak english like native speakers, though , the joy of english laguage is that you can speak it your own way but, globaly the people who get gets jobs easily are those who speak it as take your english language seriously especially in this era of globalisation.

i think i agree with missmolly, for example she said “We women destroy alot of we women’s happiness and homes” you can literally translate that to youruba without changing a thing (my yoruba is’t so fantastic 🙂 “awa obirin ma’ n baje ile ati ayo fun awa obirin”….that is classic!! AHAHHAHA. Gurl! every one is reponsible for their own actions, in this case both the ‘cheater’ and the ‘cheatee’ are equally accountable for their actions!!

Most of us failed to understand that not everyone has that opportunity to attend a private school. She is not from a wealthy background. And I want to believe that the kind of upbringing she had was not ds buttish way of developing. You dn’t enter an institution to learn how to speak good engligh, part of it is dough.., but not all. The way a child speaks starts from when he/ she is very tender. The way a child is raised also determines, You passed through that local public school in your area, expect that when you enter into an higher institution, hardly will you see a child from Convenant University roll with someone who is just opportuned to also be in that school with u. In most cases, a child that was not brought up to speak good English will hardly perform well, except if d child is exceptionally brilliant. Toyin has no excuse dough, but the fact still remains that, no man is an island. I believe the way she speaks will be better than her witeup. Have seen people who can speak fluently but can hardly compose a good sentence when it comes to writing. And please, the way we pass abusive words should be stopped. Leave a nice comment, encourage people and dnt bring them down.
