The Staggering Details that led to the Arrest of Former NSA Sambo Dasuki

Adesola Ade-Unuigbe

The immediate past National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, was arrested based on instructions from President Muhammadu Buhari and the reasons have been revealed.

The figures are staggering.

See the tweets from the President’s Twitter account below.

Here’s the official press release from the Presidency.

On the authority of Mr President, a 13 man committee was set up by the Office of the National Security Adviser to audit the procurement of arms and equipment in the Armed Forces and Defence sector from 2007 to date. While the committee which was inaugurated on 31 August 2015 is yet to complete its work, its interim report has unearthed several illicit and fraudulent financial transactions.

As part of the findings, the committee has analyzed interventions from some organizations that provided funds to the Office of the National Security Adviser, Defence Headquarters, Army Headquarters Naval Headquarters and Nigerian Air Force Headquarters, both in local and foreign currencies.

So far the total extra budgetary interventions articulated by the committee is Six Hundred and Forty Three Billion, Eight Hundred and Seventeen Million, Nine Hundred and Fifty Thousand, Eight Hundred and Eighty Five Hundred Naira and Eighteen Kobo (N643,817,955,885.18).

The foreign currency component is to the tune of Two Billion, One Hundred and Ninety Three Million, Eight Hundred and Fifteen Thousand US Dollars and Eighty Three Cents ($2,193,815,000.83).

These amounts exclude grants from the State Governments and funds collected by the DSS and Police. It was observed that in spite of this huge financial intervention, very little was expended to support defense procurement.

The committee also observed that of 513 contracts awarded at $8,356,525,184.32; N2,189,265,724,404.55 and €54,000.00; Fifty Three (53) were failed contracts amounting to $2,378,939,066.27 and N13,729,342,329.87 respectively.

Interestingly, it was noted that the amount of foreign currency spent on failed contracts was more than double the $1bn loan that the National Assembly approved for borrowing to fight the insurgency in the North East.

The committee also discovered that payments to the tune of Three Billion, Eight Hundred and Fifty Million Naira (N3,850,000,000.00) were made to a single company by the former NSA without documented evidence of contractual agreements or fulfillment of tax obligations to the FGN.

Further findings revealed that between March 2012 and March 2015, the erstwhile NSA, Lt Col MS Dasuki (rtd) awarded fictitious and phantom contracts to the tune of N2,219,188,609.50, $1,671,742,613.58 and €9,905,477.00. The contracts which were said to be for the purchase of 4 Alpha Jets, 12 helicopters, bombs and ammunition were not executed and the equipment were never supplied to the Nigerian Air Force, neither are they in its inventory.

Even more disturbing was the discovery that out of these figures, 2 companies, were awarded contracts to the tune of N350,000,000.00, $1,661,670,469.71 and €9,905,477.00 alone. This was without prejudice to the consistent non-performance of the companies in the previous contracts awarded.

Additionally, it was discovered that the former NSA directed the Central Bank of Nigeria to transfer the sum of $132,050,486.97 and €9,905,473.55 to the accounts of Societe D’equipmente Internationaux in West Africa, United Kingdom and United States of America for un-ascertained purposes, without any contract documents to explain the transactions.

The findings made so far are extremely worrying considering that the interventions were granted within the same period that our troops fighting the insurgency in the North East were in desperate need of platforms, military equipment and ammunition. Had the funds siphoned to these non performing companies been properly used for the purpose they were meant for, thousands of needless Nigerian deaths would have been avoided.

Furthermore, the ridicule Nigeria has faced in the international community would have been avoided. It is worrisome and disappointing that those entrusted with the security of this great nation were busy using proxies to siphon the national treasury, while innocent lives were wasted daily.

In light of these findings, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that the relevant organizations arrest and bring to book, all individuals who have been found complicit in these illegal and fraudulent acts.

Okayyyy….can we all agree that this guy should be charged with treason and murder? Death sentence. Period.

The tweet that mentioned the prevention of several deaths could have been averted if the troops had gotten their weapons and equipment, gave me goosebumps! How is it we’ve become so desensitized to the loss of human lives in Nigeria? How was he able to sleep at night.

Time to make an example of one person. Someone needs to be the scapegoat. Death sentence. Period.

Cali, I for that tweet. Let’s get the numbers but let’s not forget the lives that could have been…saved, gone on to live better lives, lives that could have been. There was a line about it on the free metro paper this morning and I came to BN to read about it. $2billion WA what the paper said. Money that could have gone to the military. Son, people didn’t have to die. I’m just weak

My cousin was one of them – Junior. He always told us he would serve in the army and we didn’t believe he would keep hold of that dream but he went ahead and enlisted. And when things got bad with BH, my aunt and her husband begged him to quit because they were so afraid for his life but he said that was what he’s been called to do. So he was posted to fight in Yobe and that’s where he died, before Christmas but we had no idea that we’d lost one of ours and we were celebrating while Junior’s body was lying somewhere.. The family didn’t get told until 4 months afterwards. Didn’t get the body either.

Life is funny. When I had to travel across the country to serve in that state 12 years ago, I never imagined that it would be the same place that anyone close to me would lose their life. And before he died, he spoke a lot about the disatisfaction in the ranks about poor weaponry and a general lack of care displayed by senior officers for the welfare of those on the ground.

If all of these allegations are true, Dasuki, may your own blood and that of everyone complicit in this evil be made to flow (with great pain) for every needless loss of life you’ve ochestrated.

      November 19, 2015 at 12:09 am

Actually, that prayer is too mild for what I really feel. When people say that the children of evil doers don’t deserve to suffer for their father’s sins, I wonder whether it should be other people’s children that are meant to continue bearing the impact of that wickedness? So, the evil man’s child goes scotfree whilst another carries the scars of your father’s sin??? Why? Where’s the justice there?

Dear God, please do not be unjust and please hear the cries of those who mourn. So that everyone of these who have sown death in the lives of others will live to see the fruits of their evil multiplying in their very own generations to come.

This same man, is asking the courts to grant him permission to travel abroad as a result of , you guessed it , His health. May God almighty visit you with everything you deserve. No wonder he tried so HARD to postpone the elections.

Messed up human beings, see the France incidence and how seriously they took it, how their country showed they value the lives of each French citizen, not these FOOLISH leaders we have in Nigeria. It’s all about stealing money money money and their kids flaunting nonsense weddings on BN.

oK PMB let this not be another sack, arrest, and then let go off, please let this not be another saraki case that the judicial court will use and play. Its all good to see actions being taken, but see it through and not just fire him, lock him up and bring him to book. May God guide your path, and I hope you do right by all nigerians and not just show.

I totally agree with carlifornianbawler on this. He should be tried. convicted for fraud, treason e.t.c. and executed. That will send a strong message to others and serve as a deterrent.

The interest payment on that money alone, even if it’s just 1% interest, mehhhhnnn. What manner of wickedness is this?! Meanwhile these Western economies will be developing and making progress using stolen African funds, should the banks sef not have raised an eyebrow? Na real wa.

  16. Freedom of Information.

    November 18, 2015 at 12:03 pm

Since all these facts have been unearthed against Dasuki, he should be tried in OPEN court. Let the FG try him in OPEN court. Nigerians have the right to know and they want to know. Why is the FG seeking to have a secret trial? That only implies that the Buhari administration has something to hide. The man and every other person tried for any crime in this country MUST have their day in OPEN court, no secret trials; that smacks of the days of military dictatorship.

    November 18, 2015 at 12:19 pm

This is quite gross and does not look good.

However, isn’t this odd coming from the presidents twitter handle? Are there not other agencies to handle this?

Would @POTUS or @Number10gov post tweets like this?

    Anyways, who knows

    • NoWonder

Crime of this magnitude? Doesn’t matter which twitter handle it is abeg. Let justice just be done.

    • molarah

      November 18, 2015 at 4:02 pm

The twitter handle of the President is just another avenue to get information out to the public. They could put it on TV, the newspapers, radio and websites and still some Nigerians will miss this news. So just view it as one more communication vehicle.

  18. He is from the North o!

    November 18, 2015 at 12:31 pm

He is from the North, at least PMB won’t be accused of shielding his people.

He must face the full length of the law. Heartless man!

    Sai Baba Buhari!

Well done and may Almighty God continue to give you wisdom as you unearth the evil men and women in Nigeria! Imagine all the innocent lives, children, women, men, communities that Boko nonsense destroyed all because some senseless individuals used the money meant for the military for their own selfish gain! Can you imagine the many soldiers who have died on the battlefields? Those who were beheaded by these useless boko nonsense people? Those who lost their lives wearing slippers and no guns because of this useless man and others? Nigerians when are we going to understand the true meaning of being responsible and accountable for our actions especially in the face of upholding the interest of our country? May God help us all

  20. Na today?

    November 18, 2015 at 4:24 pm

Na so!! This is how you try to fool people and achieve your objectives because Nigerians are not discerning. Tell us the people the REAL REASON behind this ‘Dasuki siege’. Nonsense! That audio recording you guys are trying so hard to get will be released if anything happens to Dasuki. You can fool some people sometimes but you can’t fool everyone every time. Nonsense?
