I’m certain that it’s no news that men’s fashion in Nigeria has had its own share of the spotlight in recent times; from gentlemen clad in impeccably tailored suits, to the more laid back casual street style and surely those that prefer the back-to-back African style. Nigerian men are paying more attention to their style, now more than ever and that’s just amazing because it goes a long way in representing our collective identity as a people.

I’m of the opinion that Style is identifiable to each person. Everybody has their preferred personal style, you might feel the most comfortable in casual street style while the next guy is the dapper prim and proper type—totally understandable! But whichever it is, what’s important is that you’re getting it right, and that’s why I thought it’ll be great for us to explore some types of men’s style trends for 3 kinds of stylish Nigerian men.

AFRICAN STYLE

Originality and uniqueness is sometimes what defines a man’s style and how best can you pull original off on the universal fashion scene than staying true to your African roots? Kaftans and danshikis among others have largely taken the leading role for trending African outfits in men’s fashion but I’ll be making one of the hottest trends right now a reference point, and you can probably guess that it’s the agbada.

Agbadas of different styles, fabric, and hues have been increasingly spotted on the runways and red carpets, and there’s almost nothing that symbolizes our African style better.The diversity of the different Agbada styles makes it even better, more options for styling with a more contemporary approach, doesn’t have to be by the book.

SUITED UP

As much as some men prefer to express their personal style by being simple in African atires, some others are of the view that they aren’t fully dressed unless they’re clad in a well tailored suit, after all, what else says dapper, elegant, and impeccable better than a suit? From black tie tuxedos, to two/three piece suits—this kind of man is the definition of classic so if this is you, keep it neat, stylish and appropriate.

Pay major attention to details, fit and finishing and step out like the classic man that you are.

CASUAL

Now there are those of us that would rather not bother ourselves with all of what goes into getting the dapper or African look and will rather just be casual, not necessarily carelessly dressed but a proper laid back style. If you’re this person, you have to  know that even when you’re sure that casual is what defines your style.  It still isn’t an excuse to be careless about your appearance. You can be dressed in a smart, casual manner and look as good as the guy in the suit. Yup! Yes you can.

Explore your options, try new things—wear a Fedora, or a long line shirt, keep your shoe game tight, really tight and you’ll just realize that you totally own your comfort zone.
