Man Climbing Pole

This morning, a Twitter user sent in photos and videos of a man attempting to commit suicide by in Ikate, Lekki.

According to Ken Egbas, the man was persuaded to come down from an electric pole but he refused. The man says he won’t come down from the electric pole unless he gets 5 million Naira.

Officials from PHCN, Nigerian Police Force and Fire Service later arrived at the scene but they were not “well-equipped” to carry out a rescue operation.

In the end, a neighbour provided an inflatable trampoline in an attempt to persuade the man to come down.

As at the time of this report he is yet to get off the electric pole but thankfully the appropriate authorities are now on ground to help.

See Ken’s tweets below.

He’s been brought down now by the Fire Service.

Apparently he says he’s from Cameroon and doesn’t know how he got into Nigeria.

Sounds to me like blackmail. “I will come down if I am given N5million”. As heartless as this sounds, the man will have to jump! Why should he be allowed to blackmail the public? Everybody has issues, we don’t go around threatening to kill ourselves if we are not given solutions to our problems.
The danger in bowing to this man’s demand is that other Nigerians will take it up as a lucrative source of obtaining easy cash. Remember how kidnapping started?
Like I said; guy jump! You can’t come and blackmail people!

I don’t see it as blackmail. Mental health issues with drug abuse most likely. Best way to deal with this is firstly, agree to give him the 5 million. After he comes down straight to yaba left.

A truly mentally ill person is too despondent to negotiate with money…..He is just drained with poverty. Not even 100K, He went straight for the millions….that’s reeking of manipulation.

“”The danger in bowing to this man’s demand is that OTHER NIGERIANS will take it up as a lucrative source of obtaining easy cash. “” Point of correction: The suicide attempter electric pole climber making demands is NOT Nigerian. He is a Cameroonian named Frederick Gino,

Sad…this is the country we live in..no value for human life. If it was a so-called celebrity now , im sure this would have been taken more seriously….until we begin to show love to the less privilege and see every human life as vital, we cant move forward as a nation…..same reason why you would call firefighter, police, etc when you have an emergency and they will come up with silly excuses….no facilities, no rescue operators, nothing. God help Nigeria.

      Your country is an embarrassment.

    • WORD.

      May 5, 2016 at 3:40 pm

@fake Nigerian, that you are an embarrassment to humankind, to your family, to your generation, to GOD Who created you (though not in this creation you have made of yourself) is abundantly clear.

All your habitual curses and evil speaking upon this nation and country Nigeria that THE ALMIGHTY GOD has chosen and destined to use for HIS Own Purpose and Glory, have returned and will ever return back upon your own head, upon your own head, and upon the heads of all who choose to associate and agree with your curses, and upon the heads of all of your ilk; your satanic agendas from the very pit of hell can not and will not prosper but have returned and will ever return seven times unto your own very hearts and live; THE ALMIGHTY GOD Himself has frustrated and will ever frustrate all the tokens of all you liars just as HE has disappointed and will ever disappoint all your devices against this sovereign nation and country under GOD ALMIGHTY: Nigeria. You are fake, you are counterfeit, you are deviant, you are a perversion of whatever you truly are. You are NOT and can NEVER nor will ever be A REAL/TRUE NIGERIAN. THE ALMIGHTY GOD’s Plan, Purpose and glorious Divine Destiny for this country shall SURELY come to be and like the man who spoke against and mocked the Plan and Word of GOD for the nation of Israel to change their terrible famine to abundance and their high inflation and economic devaluation to prosperity, “”you will see It come to being but you, and all your ilk, will not partake of it.”” in the Name of JESUS CHRIST, Amen.

What a greedy, disturbed attention whore.
He might as well jump down and kill himself because there is no way he is getting 5 million naira. Or better still, PHCN or whatever they are called now could make it even faster for him and give him a dose of 5 million volts.

OK So does he have to reference as follows and i quote ” If this guy had money & married 2 a popular musician…if people won’t be rushing here?” is this necessary, am sure this is in poor reference to TJ and Tiwa. My guy do note that his own friends came to do something not police or fireman or Nepa people or whatever,! Haba, what did you do yourself to help him off the pole. Instead of judging can we try and do our own part to help our fellow Nigerians . Clearly we cannot get it from the government or the service delivery people. That said, i think it is very selfish to request for money for yoru life! SO who is meant to pay for this? who has that kind of money laying about that will not want to use it for themselves? Abeg jor, this guy na! How about asking for job at least? na wa o!

Nigerian suicides sha. I want money, let me go and attempt to commit suicide where everyone can see me. My wife no longer condones my cheating and dependent ways. Let me drive to Lekki bridge, announce to one or two people on the way that care to listen (or hundreds of thousands via Instagram) that my wife is a bad woman, and I will be jumping. It is guys like you that get the public apathetic towards people with real issues.

Well, this is where negotiators come in he can be brought down safely without giving in to his ludicrous demand. It is circumstances like this that show the loop holes in our system and how far we still have to come in Nigeria The police should have psychologists and negotiators for events like this.
While I believe dude is not ready to die and just looking for easy way to make money and if people give in to his demands don’t be surprised to see this becoming a “thing” but it should be done right and this b.s. as gone on for too long. 6hrs????

This is armed robbery. He’s holding himself hostage. Let him jump na. See if he will jump. After getting him down he needs to be taken for a psyche evaluation. If he’s found ok, serve him with a bill for the cost of his rescue and examination. What nonsense?!!

What a coincidence! Just yesterday I was watching a short clip from the ‘The Transistor Radio’ episode of Basi & Company. a similar scenario played out where Mr. B. told Alali of the case of a man that wanted to commit suicide and was rescued and he went on to become a minister and very rich. Alali was toying with the thought of attempting suicide for blackmail.

    See here: youtube.com/watch?v=Yc1ujHlA5MY

Anyway, quite sad it has gotten to this. Frustration… but N5m niccur?

I bet he is one of access bank’s new recruit.
    I passed their final interview stage last week and was asked to come to the head office yday only to be told that;
Between the next 10 working days, you need to open 10 savings or current account with at least 200’000 naira OR a fixed deposit account of 5million naira for 180 days with 5% interest (all within 10 working days).
It was tagged voluntarily but failure to do this, no training school. No training school, no job.
The recruitment stages were about 4 and on each day, I travel from abeokuta to lagos to participate only to get this condition at the end.
I don’t know what to do too.
I guess this suicide attempter asking for 5m is just one of us jare.

    • Hmmm

      May 5, 2016 at 3:47 pm

WOW! Is that even allowed? That is sad. I pray that God makes a way for you, either in that job or another (hopefully another better one without the strings attached).

I say get a net underneath and shoot him down with a tranquilizer gun, end of story. On a serious note the rate at which Nigerians are loosing their minds these days is really alarming. The hardship in Naija is “reder” since this govt came in to power.

So, on the very same day the Cameroonian president is on state visit in Nigeria collecting confirmation that Nigeria, having dashed them Bakassi peninsular and all its stupendous wealth (through the ill-advised decision of one man), will not try to take our wealth back from them, this Cameroonian man hows himself in Nigeria, climbs a pole and demands wealth from Nigeria. Is this a manifestation of a spiritual thing? of what Cameroon is trying to do to Nigeria? Two cases of Nigeria being held to ransom, for its own wealth and resources, by Cameroon.
