During the Ooni of Ife and his Olori’s U.S. tour, Oba Ogunwusi made headlines when he sang Jesus is his father at a church – click here if you missed it.

Musician Seun Kuti has come out to say he was disappointed by the statement in a recent interview with SaharaTV.

Here’s an excerpt from the interview via Kemi Filani, or you can watch the interview below –

It’s just a shame. It’s just like saying that the Queen of England says the Pope is her father. If she says she no longer believes in the Anglican church of England and Archbishop of Canterbury and she swears allegiance to the Pope, a fellow christian but a catholic, she is leaving that throne that day. So for the Ooni to say he is the son of Jesus is cap over face, Shame! Shame! Shame!….

Especially after all the rituals he has done to become king of Yoruba people. It is literal when they say to become King in Yoruba land you have to eat the king. So after a man is eaten the king, the king that has just passed…

Yes he is the king of everybody, Christians and Muslims alike. British people are Muslims too, Ifa worshipers too but it doesn’t mean the Queen will pander to them by going to worship with them. No, but she respects their rights to free religion and accommodate them and protect them as the King, that is your duty but to go and start pandering with them is an embarrassment to a throne that is older than him, to a throne that is older than his lineage, to a throne that is older than anything that he thinks he knows.

There is another king like him, I have forgotten his name, one little young idiot that goes around saying it is the rituals that our ancestors have done that is why people are suffering so his throne is now Christian, he is a Christian king. I mean it is just nonsense. If the Ooni can say that, I can see how one little stupid boy that they also gave a crown too can say the same rubbish.”

Things change, you better embrace it. Killing of twins was once a tradition you know, so one day these rituals may go and we will have proud christian kings.

This coward and desperate Ooni is not there for God is he? Did he not publicly declare that Ifa chose that girl for him after he abandoned his first wife? Was he not worshipping water with pigeons with that girl? You can’t eat your cake and have it. It’s either his for God and declare the throne rituals free or keep doing the rituals fully. You can’t pick and choose as you go Ooni Barao bansa

Even Christ said give unto Ceaser what belongs to Ceaser. if that is what is to be done for ordination fine let him do it but you know he still acknowledges Christ as his God and he could be there to change things.

      @ade 100000 likes!

@Bee are you seriously applying that to this situation? You cant be in a grey area when it comes to God, you are either in or out. You cant worship those ‘gods’ and also claim to be worshiping God.

His sisters said not him as per wife…… and at least he is declaring for God. It will become real to him one day and he will take the required steps. “Na de pepu wey no regard God own worst pass”

Seun Kuti, you should be disappointed in yourself for comparing the pope to Jesus. If Queen Elizabeth says pope is her father is different from ooni of Ife saying Jesus is his father. Jesus is God, afterall HE is the only TRUE king and father. I know, it’s a lot of contradiction with the Ooni of ife knowing what his position entails and attending church but I quite like this Oba. He’s very active, and involved. It’s refreshing

BN, what took you guys so long to post this great interview?! Seun made very valid points, like him or not you cannot ignore any of the points he made or raised! He’s just calling it as he sees it, same way his father was and there’s absolutely nothing wrong in doing that.
I wish more of us Nigerians had more critical thinking abilities like Seun, and I guarantee you a lot of the BS that our so called leader’s get away with won’t be happening.. Nigerians like to get all emotional and hide behind religion, here’s what I always say & will say it again. Religion shouldn’t take away your critical thinking abilities..
Seun, omo abami èda gan gan ni è, you are a true son of your father Fela Anikulapo Kuti…

The Oba actually came to my church in MD and this issue was very controversial because a lot of people felt the Oba shouldn’t have been allowed to come on the altar because no one would been allowed to sit on the Oba’s throne or enter is shrine.

Brilliant interview.. I saw this a few days ago.. and this man is spot on.. u cnt choose.. In other religions people do.. I’m sure Ifa has no issues with sharing glory with sango etc.. but if you are a CHristian.. you cannot be worshipping idols and all.. I don’t think anyone wld have minded if u were a traditional worshipper.. afterall thts wht we expect of u.. but what’s with all this mixing.. The same way the late ooni was having his funeral with Imams, priests, pastors, and traditional worshippers.. It is not done.. Please stick to one… now they are doin a one year anniversary of his death and they are hosting the thanks giving service in church.. Really? stop with that.. you aren’t fooling anyone..

Kwasia is the Kuti guy and the whole ritualistic demonic Satanic Kuti atheist family. I can’t stand them. None of em. If you going to believe in snakes and Mami waters you worship. Do thar, but don’t you dare disrespect Jesus.

Oga sir what u don’t realise is salvation is personal. Verily I say to u if the Ooni says Jesus is his Father, who are u to condemn him?? He’s simply acknowledging a greater power of which I see nothing wrong!

The atheist weed-head got a point!!!

AFTER EATING THE DEAD KING’S BODY PARTS AND PARTICIPATING IN ALL SORTS OF DEMONIC RITUALS ..

.You can’t perform all those gory rituals INVOLVING (HUMAN) BLOOD to sit on a throne with a foundation of idol worship and then yarn “Jesus is my father”.. That is outright mockery and sheer hypocrisy.

      Who is this OOni fooling?!

If this “ecclectic” “mixologist” dude who goes about “praying” in churches, “praying” with imams and doing fetish at the same time is all about Jesus, he should abdicate that his throne built on idolatry and BLOOD SACRIFICE. HUMAN BLOOD!!!.

I’m yet to see a sheikh in Saudi Ararbia profess Jesus.
WHEN U MAKE A CHOICE, YOU STICK TO IT!!!

Seun please sit the f down and continue to smoke that crack baby while grown men continue to be men. No one is looking at you for any awakening except they are waking up to ask for weed.

Good interview Seun! I admire his articulate and intelligent responses. We need more African artists to show depth and know exactly what they stand for.
As for the Ooni, Seun was very right to say it’s a shame! How do you engage in so many rituals, allow ifa to choose your wife, etc and then say Jesus is your father? Can you serve God and mammon?
Make we leave story abeg, Africans need inspiring role models, not all these pretentious, efulefu leaders!

Is either Buhari is incompetent or he is in cohoot with the politicians………………………..that’s all
We just took a small aspect of the interview and dwelt on it like that is the only question asked because it has to do with religion. The Ooni should either give his life to Christ, denounce all the “king eating”, pigeon sacrifices he has been doing and become a Christian or stop the deception. You can not serve both God and mammon.
The change mantra has waned, Buhari has shown that he is either clueless or corrupt. It baffles me how politicians steal tax payers money, send their kids to the best schools, give them the best jobs when they return and the average man on the street still want to die for them. I am yet to see a Nigerian politician who has the interest of the masses at heart.
    Thank you Seun, well spoken!

New found respect for Seun. I dare say, that if our artists and actors start speaking up like this, there will definitely be a shift in how the youths think and how the government treats us.

Alot of things are often times swept under the carpet and the only person that suffers through it all is the average Nigerian, the masses. Considering what is happening now in Nigeria, I agree that Buhari is either grossly incompetent or corrupt ……..or both.

We should also use the social media platforms to jump start this movement.

I’m blown away by this interview, i almost didn’t watch the interview, due to the negative comments. He made a lot of sense….. I believe most commenters didn’t watch the interview till the end .

Fantastic interview. I agree with him on all points. Ooni is a disappointment. Huge one. He needs to step down for real. We are tired of this buffoonery. There are people who are not Christians but traditional believers and the Ooni’s seat is for that belief. Do not destroy our tradition Ooni. You act like a stranger on that seat and one not well brought up at all. Be careful. Despite your goons on here, you are walking on very thin glass.

Good interview in part but Seun needs to stop criticizing Ooni for his allegiance to Christ (no matter how tenuous); his arguments are not sound – pseudo-intellectualism at its worst.

The analogy with the Queen is faulty. England officially split from Rome and the Queen is Head of Church of England. If most of England became Roman Catholic the Constitution of England would change to reflect the new reality?

The Ooni is a custodian of culture which is dynamic. I have friends from Ile-Ife. Most people in Ife are now Christians so Christianity is the de facto religion of Ife. It is no longer traditional worship. The Ooni is on the throne in a mainly Christian community.

Seun is mocking Jesus Christ – the Lord of Lords. Allegiance to Christ would have saved Fela’s life from HIV/AIDS. Without Christianity there would still be human sacrifice, killing of twins, torture of widows and a thousand other ills in Nigeria.

Seun’s grandfather was an Anglican priest. It is Seun himself that needs to rediscover his roots. The so-called traditionalist enlightenment he displays here is a short-cut to the dark ages.
