Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, said on Saturday that begging has no basis in Islam and challenged those engaging in the act to find legitimate means of earning a living.

The monarch made the remark in Sokoto at the graduation of 2000 women trained in various skills by the Wife of Sokoto State Governor Mairo Tambuwal.

The training was conducted in collaboration with Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission to empower the women drawn from the 86 districts of the state.

The Sultan said, “our women should always desist from street begging, as it has no basis in Islam and it only generates more harm than good among the society.”

“Women have always been the pillars for any societal development, so we need to do more in encouraging and supporting their living standard in order to yield a better society. Moreover empowering women is one of the positive base to a better, secured and productive society.”

He commended Mairo Tambuwal for initiating the programme and admonished the beneficiaries to utilize the opportunity to enhance their livelihood.

Earlier, the governor’s wife had expressed appreciation to the Sultanate Council, the state government and Zakkat commission for supporting the initiative.

She said that the skills training was principally to make women in the state self reliant.

Mairo Tambuwal, who was represented Hauwa Muhammad, called on the beneficiaries to apply the new skills they acquired to uplift their economic status and contribute to the overall development of the state.

The Overseer of the Zakat commission, Lawal Maidoki, said that the 2000 women were carefully selected and empowered to live above the poverty line.

Because it is not Healthy to go hungry for too long, people beg.

It is the duty if government to do the needful an empower the belly infrastructure accordingly.

It is not about Islam but a human condition that needs nutrients and satiety at all cost.

Don tell mind him. Islam always also teaches compassion towards the poor. It’s easy to selectively quote the Quran when it favors you. In islam leaders are supposed to provide a decent standard of living for for citizens

I don’t understand Muslims. I read some part of the Quran such a confusing book. It makes sense the reason their followers psychotic patients. The Bible is very straightforward on how “Christians” should live. So, it’s Islam to cut their fingers but it’s not Islam for them to beg. How do they survive? Which way, Muslims?

If begging is not an Islamic stead, surely cutting off the arms of petty thieves is. A lot of the Muslim beggars on the streets are missing limbs. You want limbless people to apply for jobs? Who would hire them? You? If you want beggars to get off the street, perhaps reevaluate your law on forceful amputation. It’s obviously not doing the economy any good.

On the other hand, I hear the marriage vows of the North and South to form a one Nigeria expired in December 2015. To my knowledge no vows have been taken to renew the union. So can the North be a country of their own so that we can push the East, West, and South to development. The ‘third world’ and ‘developing’ reference to us as a country has been stamped on for too long. Cutting off limbs, marrying underage girls, devaluing women, holy wars, etc. will never bring us forward.

This man has been sultan for several years now and he is only just realizing that begging is unislamic? Or is it the Emir of Kano’s voicing out about misinterpretation of Islam and Northern leaders using it to subjugate their people that is making him speak out now? In every state in Nigeria, you find beggars from the North. This has been going on for ages. Yet, it is now you lot are suddenly realizing begging is unsilamic. Please shift.
