Mark Zukerberg unveils new Facebook Mission in Chicago

The new mission of Facebook “Bring the world Closer together” seeks to foster meaningful Virtual communities around the world. The company seeks to transcend from just connecting people which was her initial mission to fostering communities among the now connected people.

Zuckerberg, speaking to CNN said the mission is: “To give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together,”

Zuckerberg took to Instagram to explain the reason behind the new mission of the company. He stated:

For the past decade, we’ve focused on making the world more open and connected. We’re not done yet and we will continue working to give people a voice and help people connect. But even as we make progress, our society is still divided. So now I believe we have a responsibility to do even more. It’s so important that we’re changing @facebook‘s whole mission to take this on. It’s not enough to simply connect the world; we must also work to bring the world closer together.

Zuckerberg hopes to accomplish the company’s new mission with the maximization of Facebook Groups. Facebook groups which already exist  will be harnessed has platforms for debates on important political, social and economic issues affecting members while serving as a support system for members of the group.

Zuckerberg seeks to achieve the company’s new mission in the space of five years. “I think [it] gives us a good shot within five years or so to get to this goal of connecting a billion people to meaningful communities,” he said in the interview with CNN

Facebook, however will have to put in measures to control content shared on Facebook Groups so as to keep the idea behind their new mission in check.

Zuckerberg is however optimistic about his mission to foster communities among the billions of Facebook users around the world.

Facebook groups may not be able to directly change problems in the society but can bring to light the issues that need to be fully addressed  by people in place of positions to make a change.
