Makurdi Flood: Why Africans must use the media to tell our stories to the world – Chika Unigwe

With the numerous social networking and content sharing platforms all over the world today, it has become easy for Africans to share Africa’s stories unadulterated and directly with the world.

It’s no longer time to complain about the world not telling our stories or telling them wrongly, but to use the tools at our disposal to share our own stories.

Writer and winner of the 2012 Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas Prize for Literature Chika Unigwe, shared the message above in a short, but insightful thread on Twitter.

This is in the wake of flood submerging nearly 3,000 homes in Makurdi, the capital of Benue state in Nigeria. Social media users have called out western media for not reporting the disaster going on in Nigeria; Niamey, Niger, as well as in Mumbai, India.

This also applies to Africa’s unique culture, identity, history and development. From Morocco to Nigeria, and Rwanda to Mauritius, Africans must come out, to use the tools at their disposal to spread the message of Africa to the world.
