Senate confirms ₦13.5m Illegal Monthly Pay - BellaNaija

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed that its members do receive the sum of ₦13.5 million monthly designated as “running cost” separate from the approved monthly salaries, Premium Times reports.

Senator representing Kaduna Central District Shehu Sani had previously revealed senators receive the sum, separate from their monthly salaries and constituency fund.

The sum is said to be illegal as it is not approved by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

Spokesperson of the Senate, Aliyu Abdullahi, confirmed the sum, saying it is stated in the National Assembly budget released to the public.

Sani “did not disclose anything new,” Abdullahi said, adding that all political offices receive running costs separate from their salaries. He said:

If people had looked critically at the budget of the National Assembly which has since been made public, they would have seen that various line items like traveling, medicals, consultancy and the rest were captured in the budget and they were the funds divided for each Senator’s use.

Almost all holders of elective and appointive offices have running costs allocated to their offices and that cannot be said to be part of their salaries.

Premium Times reports however that the budget had no subhead for office running cost.

Do you people now realize that Buhari is just a fraction of your problems ..I notice Nigerian spend so much energy on castigating presidency and forget about the people who represent you up there and they in assembly fuel that castigation not because they love you but to serve as a distraction while they do their thing .. lol
I have seen how the set up committees to look into certain issues in the various sectors only to call these companies and demand to be settled in foriegn currency or else they will blow the whistle .. after the settlement they look the other way while the masses groan under all kinds of unethical practices

This actually brought tears to my eyes, like in what way is this fair? With so many Nigerians dying due to inaccessibility of healthcare, so many young people unemployed, like how is this fair? and these guys will go to church and mosque. Ah!

    Why?
This is not only illogical, but it is rubbing salt on the wounds of fellow countrymen/women.
$36,000 per month is not a justified salary for lawmakers whom their constituents earn $50 per month, the wage disparity is too huge, this can only lead to people becoming desperate and lead to increase the crime rate. What I find worrying is that the same people who are even lucky enough to have a job that pays £50 (N18,000) are the same people that vote for an individual that does nothing for them to earn $36,000 per month. I am beginning to think that the $36,000 earners are purposely using poverty as a tool to control and coerce. So let me break it down, When they have poor and hungry people in their constituency, they give them gifts to get their vote, thereby using their wealth to buy the vote of the poor. The cycle may never change because the people who can change the system are the same people that are benefiting from it. The other sad thing is that these same people will use every emotional card to get votes, be it tribe, religion, gender you name it. We need to do better.

No wonder dino and friends can be running their mouth on social media and sharing pictures of their mansion and cars.
    Shame on ALL of them!!!!!!

Trauma victims who should be flat till cleared by a scan are transported and packed like sardine into civilian cars and these people are okay with the way things are in Nigeria.

Dino!!! It is not God’s blessing when you are robbing from the poor to buy cars.

So someone that has secondary school certificate is earning more than 150 million naira in a year, while my aunt who has worked for over 20 and is a principal in Ebonyi state had her salary slashed to 50k a month? What a shame. No wonder a former Senator who was inter viewed by Channels TV claimed he couldn’t remember how much he was earning as a Senator after just one year away from the Senate. How obscene. No wonder they can kill anyone, including their family members to be there. Even the constituency allowance that is never used, akin to the security votes given to Governors. How disturbing.

I know someone who is trying to run for office, a young lad. Is platform though (zilch). Nothing, he says his goal is fidelity. What has fidelity got to do with politics? No direction, plan or platform of any sorts. Someone tried calling him out today on social media, about him just writing vague quotes with no concrete message or direction. one of his supporters wrote and I quote “we like it that way”. There was a full blown exchange of words between these 2 but after reading that response I have come to realize that there is no hope for Nigeria, people run for office just to chop their own too and stuff their wallets. Both the politician and his supporter are men in their 30s, graduates of higher institutions in Nigeria. So what hope do I have? see the old folks living on bloated pay, yet, there are people barely making ends meet who not only celebrate these people but will kill for them. The young too just feel it’s their turn to come and chop too.
