BN Living Trends: Oh, the Joys of Cake Smashing! Baby Photoshoots with Kids and Cake | M12 Photography

One great way to spice up your child’s birthday photography is having a cake smash session incorporated into the photo shoot. It is a current trend of getting your child messy with the cake while the photographer clicks away. It is a perfect way to celebrate their birthday in a fun way, kids love cake!

Family photographer, Bisola Ijalana of M12Photography spoke to BN Living about the cake smashing trend and told us all that happens behind the scenes before, after and during the photoshoot.

I love cake smash sessions. It is fun watching kids exploring with their hands, legs etc all in an attempt to smash the cake.

Before the Shoot:

We usually have cake smash photo sessions for 1 year old kids and sometimes 2 year old kids. Prior to the shoot I am contacted by a parent(s) of the child about scheduling a birthday shoot for their child. Depending on the sex and age of the child we discuss the theme on such things as colour, backgrounds, outfit, props, and set-up for the shoot.

I also suggest incorporating a cake smash set- up and in some cases the parent(s) make the suggestion because they have seen some of my works with the cake smash theme and they love it. We discuss the design of the cake, and I send the sample to a cake baker to produce.

The Cake Smash Session:

The cake smash is usually the last set-up for the photo session. The goal is to capture the child devouring his/her birthday cake. Always a fun filled session. Does this come easy? I wish it does. It surely takes lots of patience on the part of the photographer and the parent(s) to get the child to touch the cake.

Depending on the mood of the child it can run into some good number of minutes. We sing for the child, play music and sometimes put some in the child’s mouth to taste or our mouths to make the child move close to the cake and smash it. When this is achieved it sure can be messy but fun for the child and everyone.

Post Photo Session:

Whether the cake smash is done at the client’s home or at the photographer’s studio, everywhere is surely messy. The floor, backgrounds or any prop smeared with cake gets cleaned and our fun loving kid gets cleaned also either with baby wipes or water depending on how messy is the kid.
