Its only a few days until the 1st ever MTV Africa Music Awards aka the MAMAs.
As we gear up to the event, a slew of pre-event concerts are being held all around Africa.
Here are the photos from the Lagos event. It featured performance from Naeto C, The Game, 9ice, D’Banj, Don Jazzy & Wande Coal.

Hip Hop? 9ice? He is a talented artiste but to place “Gongo Aso”, “Party Rider”, etc under the Hip Hop Category, is to BASTARDIZE the genre. Hip Hop = Naeto C, Eldee, Ikechukwu, M.I (Well technically he’s an MC).

Cold play? so, If Africans are not included in the North American Version of MTV Awards, who does Africa feel the need to include foreign artistes in our version of the awards—-space that should have been alloted for African artistes?

Reminds me of why I am trying to hit the Nigerian Entertainment scene– they definitely need pointers.

Hip Hop – 9ice? He’s a talented artiste and I love his style of music. But to place music like Gongo Aso, Party Rider, etc under the category “Hip Hop” = Bastardization of the Genre.

Hip Hop = Eldee, Naeto C, Sauce Kid, M.I (well technically M.I is an MC)

The nominations are WACK. Coldplay? MTV Africa? If African artistes aren’t included in the North American version of MTV Awards, why does Africa feel the need to include foreign artistes?

Best Hip-hop – lil wayne, the game and 9ice??? …
How come Nigeria and SA dominate all the categories? im sorry but this MAMAs is Whack… It is not representing the whole Africa – Mali has the best musicians of all time , and i dont see femi kuti (a legend) in any of these…Ok i get, the awards is for strictly “small boi” artist..Bella you should have said so now…anyone getting it should not be proud. MTV should have done things properly

Anon, are you for real? I didn’t see any ‘Legend’ category up there, so what exactly do want Femi Kuti nominated for? To the best of my knowledge, he didn’t release any new albums in the past year (or if he did, his work did not get much airplay), so in what universe do you think he should be nominated for an MTV award? Do you even know what MTV awards are about? If not, let me educate you – they’re about the hottest, young talented musicians in their market; the popular artists who are making waves at the moment based on their recent work – that’s the way it’s done all around the world, and Africa won’t be any different.
On the issue of American artists getting nominated, the unfortunate truth is that MTV (unlike the Grammys, for instance) does not try to do transparent, politically correct, ‘objective’ awards: a case in point – just a couple of weeks back, Katy Perry (an American) won the Best Newcomer Award at the MTV European Music Awards. This may have a little something to do with the fact that she HOSTED the show! So the fact that The Game will be performing in Nigeria during the period of the MAMAs should be a small hint…. All said and done, this is the way ‘the game’ (pardon the pun) works at MTV – fun, cool, hip award shows… and I think it’s great that Africa is finally getting in on the action and that Nigeria gets to play host.
