Lawyer/Entrepreneur Dupsy Abiola Impresses Panel on Reality TV Show, Dragon’s Den UK | Watch Video of her Presentation

Making a successful presentation can sometimes be difficult task. Getting your composure right, connecting with your audience, creating a good first impression and very importantly, having the confidence to carry your presentation through requires some amount of practice. And so, when we see someone who has done that successfully with good reports from the panel, it is something worth celebrating.

Dupsy Abiola was a contestant on Dragon’s Den UK, a reality TV programme featuring entrepreneurs pitching their business ideas in order to secure investment finance from a panel of venture capitalists. She attended Hampstead High School, London, before graduating from the University of Oxford. She later went on to attend the Inns of Court School of Law.

Dupsy’s inspired story started when she worked as a lawyer in the city of London. The 30-year-old was tasked with recruiting new staff, when she quickly realised the difficulty in shortlisting suitable candidates by simply looking at the CVs available to her. Not to be defeated, she researched websites and companies that matched graduates to jobs and found that there were none. She found a gap in the recruitment market. This gap led to the birth of her recruitment website InternAvenue.com. She later mustered the courage to leave her secure employment to pursue her ambition of this website and later found herself in the Dragon’s Den (UK).

During her presentation, she maintained eye contact with members of the panel, spoke confidently, had a smile for them  and got quite emotional when it was time to talk about her father, late Chief M.K.O Abiola. At the end, they all had good reports about her.

Watch her presentation below and tell us what you think.

  • Sheila October 27, 2012 at 12:21 pm

Didikan, the name is from Dupe. I know some of the Abiola kids. They’re all so brainy and nice. Go, Dupsy! Sky’s the limit!

I LOVE DRAGONS DEN!! And shes incredibly amazing!! Bless you Sweetheart!!

  • ego October 27, 2012 at 1:09 pm

Very intelligent driven and well spoken woman. But i have to correct sthing, her dad sponsored numerous coups and was betrayed by his friends in uniform. Technically he was one of those who helped enriched himself thru dubious means. that said, he was wronged and denied his mandate and callously killed. i really hate nigerian politics.
Happy that his kids are thriving against all odds.

    • Lams October 27, 2012 at 5:01 pm

Omase jare (thank you very much), you talk am well. Hear I was cheering her on, Abiola is a popular yoruba name, so i didn’t make the connection at all. When she mentioned her father, aaaw an emotional story, but she shouldn’t make it look like they suffered jare. The Abiola wives and kids were weeeeeeeeeeell taken care of, after MKO’s death Well taken care of sef. They had the same lifestyle, they would have had, was he alive.

    • Olami October 28, 2012 at 8:11 am

Spoken like a true, bitter Igbo.

      • Lola October 30, 2012 at 12:22 pm

There was no need for that comment….and it is very true.
They were well taken care of.
The fact that she went to Oxford University says it all.

  • Omoluabi October 27, 2012 at 1:12 pm

So sad that we are not using all this energies back home, but kept serving Oyinbo people.

    • omoibo October 27, 2012 at 5:47 pm

Who’s fault is it? If Nigeria doesn’t provide the environment for your energy or talent to flourish then you’re free to seek out somewhere where your talent can be appreciated & nurtured, even if it is “serving oyinbo people” as you have naively stated

  • NNENNE October 27, 2012 at 1:24 pm

Impressive! Wish that all your dreams come true.

  • Suuidsaidl October 27, 2012 at 3:55 pm

    Do it gurl!

  • omoibo October 27, 2012 at 5:42 pm

Impressive! She was concise, passionate and her delivery was flawless, no fluff ! If I were a VC, you bet ya I would be funding her venture ;-)

  • Agape October 27, 2012 at 5:46 pm

    Very impressive! Well done!!!

  • Cici October 27, 2012 at 6:54 pm

As a recruitment consultant she should know that you don’t provide answers that lead onto emotional issues or things that leave you teary eyed. Secondly I think this was more for publicity than investment. None of Abiola’s children lack for anything that includes money for business ventures.

    • xoxo October 29, 2012 at 10:27 pm

have u seen her bank account or what? talk talk nawa!

    • Ezi November 3, 2012 at 5:52 pm

Please rewatch the video to assess for yourself whether she used her personal business as part of her pitch, or if she only brought it up in response to a personal question.

  • Gbonju October 27, 2012 at 8:51 pm

awww i dont know her personally, but i am definitely a proud sister :)

  • Amber October 27, 2012 at 10:01 pm

@omoluabi….I think itz time everyone took every opportunity and talent one has to do urself and family good, abi if naija doesn’t want to move forward,u move urself forward.that doesn’t make anyone a slave to anyone.More grease to ur elbow jare dupsy

  • atutupoyoyo October 27, 2012 at 10:49 pm

confident, well articulated, brilliant and deserved the win definitely… Like the Man said, she is truly an Entrepreneur (meaning, she already had workable plans, funds and the drive). All the best Dupsy! I’ve learnt over time that Confidence, eloquence and good articulation is a big PLUS in getting what you want/deserve.

she did her homework, knew about competitors and able to give a good story why she is different.
Kudos to a very young and intelligent Nigerian.

    My 2 cents

  • mujer casada October 28, 2012 at 7:44 pm

While I thought her formal presentation was stilted, her poise and responses were SUPERB. She nailed it. She exuded confidence, knowledge and grace. You go girl.

  • Blossom October 29, 2012 at 1:27 am

She must have been too young to even remember him or what he was like, I think. Seems like she’s recounting what she was told her father was. Poor child.

  • ushees October 29, 2012 at 8:59 am

amazing!!! wat more can i say…opportunities r everywhere ,at our door steps ,in our everyday routine, but we youths fail 2 descern on these opportunities but instead we look 4 opportunities nd talent dat isnt dere…i pray God help our generation!

Good to see someone not piggybacking on the family name but instead is willing to go out there…and even pitch to dragon’s den when someone will say lets call uncle ranti and aunty basirat…
    damn…i am inspired…you go girl…
    wish her the bestest…
And May her Fathers soul rest in peace…Amin

  • Marie October 29, 2012 at 8:30 pm

    Absolutely amazing!!

  • Hakeem October 30, 2012 at 12:43 am

She is a replica of her father in both looks and intellect!! May Allah forgive her dad sins and grant him paradise.

  • adelegirl October 30, 2012 at 1:05 am

One of the best, self-assured, articulate and well thought out pitches I have seen on Dragons’ Den. I caught myself tearing up when she talked about her dad. The fact that she is Nigerian/has Nigerian roots makes me extremely proud. Wish her all the very best and hope she does exceedingly well with Intern Avenue and other businesses she wishes to pursue. Her father must be really proud… May his soul continue to rest in peace…

  • X factor October 30, 2012 at 10:24 am

    Wow!

  • UNKNOWN November 24, 2012 at 11:35 am

In our beautiful country Nigeria you either have to know someone in a good position to support your project or you need to have sex with a bunch of people to get the funding needed.

If she had approached companies in Nigeria they would of said ‘o gel forget dat gist when r u free to meet we’ll talk then.’

Nigerians…… SOME Nigerians are just dream killers! SOME women have made it difficult for real women that are ambitious and want to make a change and honest living in Nigeria without compromising themselves!

    God help Nigeria
