Hurray for Nigeria! 2Face & D’banj win the Best International Act (Africa) award at the 2011 BET Awards – Photos

Nigerian nominees 2Face Idibia and D’banj beat their counterparts from Ghana, South Africa, Congo DR and Benin to emerge as joint winners of the Best International Act (Africa) award at the 2011 BET Awards which took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California last night.

Based on comments from readers; 2Face and D’banj were the top contenders for the award and indeed predictions proved to be accurate.

The awards were handed to the stars at the event; however, the Best International Act (Africa) award segment was not televised.
BN hopes that this segment is added to the televised portion of the ceremony next year. We are also looking forward to collaborative on-stage performances with African artistes alongside African-American acts at future events.

In other BET Awards news, Tinie Tempah won the Best International Act (UK) award. Tinie Tempah’s (Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu) parents are Nigerian and he recently performed at the 2011 ARISE Magazine Fashion Week in Lagos.
Congrats to the stars! We are proud of you.

proud of u guys esp tubaba…but pls what was D’banj wearing????…thanku tuface for saving our face….

  • Someone June 27, 2011 at 10:07 am

What sort of thing is BET doing? If they don’t know what to do, they should have asked the public to vote instead of saying both of them should share it. I think African artists should start boycotting shows like this. 2face, D’banj, M.I, P Square, etc have all stars in their own right and should be treated as such.

  • @Feeleric June 27, 2011 at 12:45 pm

I greatly admire d love and support both 2face and D’banj showed to each other in d midst of competition. I knew 2baba would win. However, d joint-winning by d 2 Naija acts is a testimony of d power of Naija. Congratulations to 2face and D’banj!

  • chy 9ja June 27, 2011 at 3:31 pm

this is just a start for them especially 2face, i am wishing them all the best.

  • Ayo Fashola June 27, 2011 at 3:31 pm

I wonder why BET refuses to televise this portion. Are they ashamed to be African? Are they still mad or upset or something? When you watch the Oscars, they are giving credit to all European acts. Why is BET so ashamed to show the world these people? Are they afraid African-Americans are not ready or do they feel African-Americans are to ignorant to appreciate these sounds? More than likely many AA’s have heard this music and love it. They shouldn’t worry that 2face and D’banj will take away their audience. Although they are seriously the bomb and i’m sure could very well do it, its simply means these AA acts need to step their game up. All their music sounds the same if you ask me.

    • moi June 27, 2011 at 3:47 pm

I think you knack it on the head…I dnt think a lot of Akatas are ready 4 the African influx

    • Chipii June 27, 2011 at 5:17 pm

I totally agree with you man! Why wud u have a category and not televise it giving the winner a chance to shine? If the winner is not given the chance to address such a large audience, what’s the point of them going in the first place? How are they meant to garner new fans? BET should please learn from the MOBOs. I hope they fix up next year and give African acts better recognition. I mean, come on!

    • precious June 28, 2011 at 1:56 am

dt’s not de pt. many other categories were not televised due to time like best actor, best actress and even best female r&b. i support de fact dt they should have televised de international though so dey introduce dem to different audiences too

    • atugbala June 29, 2011 at 12:31 am

@Ayo…i totally agree with you…i sat by my tv to see my fellow Nigerians picking up an award on this night…but we should just be happy that at least they gave the both of them…when the right time comes they wont be able to cover it…My boys are taking it to the next level…they are there already and they will start sweeping accolades that belongs to their top artists.

  • Luvlyn June 27, 2011 at 3:32 pm

Dbanj is so daring wif fashion.. I absolutely adore dat green jacket, I wanna hav a feel of it. And d 1950s inspired shirt is gr8, only dbanj can pull it off. Dis man looks sleek and sophisticated. Muaahh 4 dbanj.

  • mottie June 27, 2011 at 3:40 pm

I no fit shout,I tot I was only one nt. Feeling Dbanj’s outfit,Tuface’s outfit looks nice bt it reminds me of BUSTA’s outfit last year at the BET award.anyway congrats to the 2 kings of music.all the best xxxxxx

  • Afronubia June 27, 2011 at 3:50 pm

Well Done Tuface, well done D’Banj, Well Done Tinie Tempah! Why didnt BN put a picture of Tinie na! Loving Tuface’s outfit!

  • nich June 27, 2011 at 3:57 pm

that is the problem….why give them or even call for the award and they would not televise it….last year it was the same thing……EUROPEANS MAY ACCEPT AFRICANS..BUT NOT BLACK AMERICANS…….

why must they do these for the second time….the best thing is for naija artist to start building their own awards back home….this is a disgrace

  • uche June 27, 2011 at 4:20 pm

Wtf are u guyz sayin, pls if u want to hate on dbanj go n chop stone sumwhere. D dude was even tryin to portray nigeria’s green white green. N ure here yarninh balls. He dressed way beta dan tuface like he has always done. Congrats to dem sha. Leggo

perhaps d 2 act. are makin it real for Nigeria nd Africa as whole.. bt d fact still ramain dat d Award is meant for one not two. give it tu u guys bt Dbanj should nt b overconscious of his outfit cos its brings out d wrong sense of it some tym. Also apreciate 2baba for his consistancy

  • Kevin June 27, 2011 at 7:13 pm

What is it with The ‘Jacquard’ out fit Dbanj is wearing, Those shoes look like what kollington or Obesere would wear. The Gold ‘Belit’ and the ‘Felfet’ yaket is a NO NO> Dapo you let me down!!! Congrat to you two on your award.

    • Dr Peperempe June 27, 2011 at 9:56 pm

you sound condescending and thus not very intelligent ! What do you mean by what kollington or obesere would wear? As they are lesser beings? oh sorry I forgot, anyone who sings music indigenous to us is “razz” ! My bad!

    • gifted June 28, 2011 at 11:07 am

As for u beefing D’banj shoes, for your info. the shoes is “Christian louboutin mika raja” shoes from the 2011 spring collection. But I doubt if u know what that as a result of ur ignorance in this post. So I will advice u and let u do the justice of ‘googling’ it and see how much it cost..

      • Sadebaby June 29, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Because its a Louboutin shoe and costs $$$$ does not mean its cute. U like the shoe and she doesn’t. I don’t like it either and sure don’t like his dressing too. I like the jacket and that’s about it. We are all entitled to our own opinion when it comes to dressing. Some people are risk takers and some are minimalists.

  • Ademola sunday June 27, 2011 at 7:13 pm

dis guyz are 2 mush,D’banj outfit making all nigeria proud!!!!!!!

  • sola June 27, 2011 at 7:36 pm

Why does everyone get so excited over the BET Award. Yes, it’s great that they won but really what is in a BET Award. The BET or EBT Awards like its called has no standard. Anything and Anyone can win. The award show itself I believe it organized by a mad man. Can u imagine they said it was a TIE. How did they come up with that. FACT: Dbanj only won because he just signed with Kanye West. Please ppl stop acting like this award is going to Boost their careers it’s not. Even an MTV Award is better than a BET award. I know u might think that I am hating but I am not. Plus BET does not even appreciate these African Artist, they were not even mentioned at any point during the program.

    • Sadebaby June 29, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Because its a Louboutin shoe and costs $$$$ does not mean its cute. U like the shoe and she doesn’t. I don’t like it either and sure don’t like his dressing too. I agree with you Sola.

I personally don’t understand why D’Banj got nominated over other artists in Naija in the first place. We sure don’t celebrate talent any longer. Musically, anything goes nowadays.

  • oij June 27, 2011 at 7:56 pm

dbanjs shoe is out of this world thats a louboutin shoe, its 2500 dollar shoe, take a bow son,u killed it…congrats to both of u

  • Me June 27, 2011 at 8:55 pm

y give them awards and then not broadcast it? African American have this inferiority complex, sorry to say this but it is the truth. Personally I think these guys are too talented to be insulted like this. I suggest all African artists should just stay away from BET. Can’t believe they are being treated like their music is second class. I agree with you Sola, BET Award is worthless.

  • Ngum June 27, 2011 at 9:37 pm

lol @ Sola. I’m pleased, they won. Surprised it was a tie though! And btw what’s the deal with not showing the African acts? They might as well not bother with the category. Hmmm, them want exploit African money but them dey hide us under carpet. Let’s see how long this foolishness lasts.

  • Fab junkies June 27, 2011 at 9:45 pm

Congrats to dem but SERIOUSLY, why wasn’t it televised? Same thing during MTV Awards b4 d start of MAMA, D banj got best African Act but it wasnt televised wit d rest of d show. Why ve a category if u really dont want people to know abt it. Insult.

  • judy June 28, 2011 at 12:30 am

  • girl September 7, 2011 at 8:13 pm

@Sola……Ur comment abt D”banj winning the BET award b”cos he was signed wiv Kanye West is the least or better still, the worst comment here. You”re the only one (of all the ppl listed on this forum)who wrote that gibberish. How about the awards D”banj has won so far from MTV Europe awards,MTV awards,MOBO,Channel O etc that he won before he dreamt he was gonna be signed onto Kanye”s label?Did he also win them b”cos of Kanye?Pls if u don”t like D”banj,ur better off not mentioning his name at all as opposed to chatting bull “ere.

  • ten September 7, 2011 at 8:27 pm

@sadebaby…If u don”t like D”banj,go and do a somersault! The so called talented lyricists like u think they are,how many of them can play a musical instrument excellently well jus like D”banj can? What can that be grouped as other than “TALENT”?How many of them can actually entertain and i mean real entertainment just like D”banj can?Or u want to dispute that?Even so many haters outside this forum can”t help but accept that.U better go and understand the meaning of talent and how versatile it is b4 u open ur mouth.Who told u Music is all abt Lyrics or vocals?Plus wot makes u think evry other artist is that lyrically sound?U shld equally try and understand the complexity of music as well as well as its sources of inspiration.
