It was all fun, rap and RnB at the 6th edition of the Underground a few weeks ago, with performances from 12 upcoming acts and established acts like Rooftop MCs, Black Magic and Zara. The event which held at GET Arena, aims to uncover amateur artists. The Underground, is organised by the Inner Circle group and has so far uncovered various raising stars such as Oye, Irene, Boom Eye to mention a few.

Boogey was named the winner of the 6th edition and it was a unanimous decision by both the judges and the crowd.

About Boogey  (David Iye Odey)

Boogey is a 25 year old biologist who after studying at the Cadi Ayyad Univserity, Marrakesh, Morocco in 2009 returned to Nigeria in 2010 to be part of the NYSC programme. He attended Nigerian Navy Nursery & Primary School, Okoko Maiko then transferred to Crown Gate School, Shomolu and finished his secondary education at Federal Government College Lagos, popularly known as IJ (Ijanikin). In 2002, he won a scholarship to study in Morocco, where his musical career began in earnest.

Although Boogey had always been in love with hip hop and the idea of “rhyming” as a kid, it was in 2005 he wrote his first complete rap verse which he admits, “kinda sucked'”. His first recording was a 2007 feature on a Moroccan rap song which he tells us received ”mad air play and gave me the opportunity to work with some of the finest artists over there”.

Boogey’s friend Laru, encouraged him to register for the Underground event, although he was reluctant at first, he is glad he did.”‘It was a blast all through. The room was full of so much talent. I’m glad I made that last minute decision”.  Since winning the Underground, Boogey says “my audience has gotten a tad larger and my networking has improved”.

Up next for Boogey is the release of his mixtape, Art-ificial Intelligence, later this year or early next year. Although, it will be his first ‘solo’ project, he feels confident. He describes his sound as ” hip hop doused with consciousness, poetry, intellect, humor, love and rebellion. I like to experiment by fusing tinges of other genres with the hip hop”.

During and before the Underground, Boogey’s style was compared with acts like Talib Kweli,Lupe Fiasco and Cory Gunz. He’d love to work with a bunch of artists and producers such as MI, Mode 9, Sossick, Eldee, Don Jazzy etc…
