On Saturday 29th June 2013, the first lady of the United States of America (FLOTUS) Michelle Obama was spotted in South Africa in a hand printed chiffon blouse by Nigerian design label Maki Oh.

The world’s most powerful first lady who was in Johannesburg for a seminar tagged Connecting Continents: A Conversation with U.S First Lady Michelle Obama, styled the blouse from the label’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection with a printed green A-line skirt.

Her look was completed with gold hoop earrings, a black belt and orange heels.

It must be the highest peak for the designer…But I still feel some cunninness* in what she did,to please the Africans. …Ofcourse she can’t wear any of our design in the US!

@comment awaiting moderation : Cunningness ? Not really . It is the idea of when you are in Rome, you behave like the Romans? It is being sensitive to the Africa’s cultural and fashion aspirational environment. That has always been America’s way of signifying cultural understanding. Her choice of designer or dress was not in anyway patronizing , but rather done in solidarity to our aspirations as Africans.

Ever since I learned that designers actually have this thing they can do – whereby they pay the celebrities’ PR or so? to get them to wear their design, I don’t get too excited anymore. But good publicity for Maki anyway….

Many designers do that, however Michelle Obama doesn’t fall into that category, so feel free to get excited.

Thanks for celebrating Africans but you get an F for color and pattern riot even in a color blocking and pattern mixing age

Be nice people! She can only wear an outfit at a time. She has a history of uplifting nobodies, too. Jason Wu is a typical example.

Nice she is patronizing our designs but wish she’d done it in a fab way because the actual outfit is rather horrible.
