Washington D.C (Reuters/NAN)― U.S. war planes struck Iraq on Friday attacking Islamist fighters advancing towards the Kurdish region after President Barack Obama said Washington must act to prevent “genocide”.

This is the first time U.S warplanes are hitting Iraq since American troops pulled out in 2011.

The fighters had advanced to within a half hour’s drive of Arbil, capital of Iraq’s Kurdish region and a hub for U.S. oil companies.

A Pentagon spokesman said two F/A-18 aircraft dropped laser-guided bombs on a mobile artillery piece used by Islamic State fighters to shell Kurdish forces defending Arbil.

Obama had authorised air strikes after tens of thousands of Christians fled for their lives from Islamic State fighters who have crucified and beheaded captives.

In a statement on Friday, Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, called the attacks on Christians and other religious minority in Iraq “horrific.’’

Welby called on the international community to document human rights abuses being committed in northern Iraq so that future prosecutions can take place.

“It is important and necessary for the international community to challenge the culture of impunity which has allowed these atrocities to take place.

“What we are seeing in Iraq violates brutally people’s right to freedom of religion and belief, as set out under Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.’’

The leader of the global Anglican Communion said the events in Iraq called attention to “sorrow yet again’’ and a reminder to the plight of Christians and other religious minorities in conflict situations.

He said with the world’s attention on the plight of those in Iraq, it must not forget that this is part of an “evil pattern’’ against Christians and other minorities around the world.

“Only this week I received an email from a friend in Northern Nigeria about an appalling attack on a village, where Christians were killed because of their faith in Jesus Christ.

“Such horrific stories have become depressingly familiar in countries around the world, including Syria, South Sudan and the Central African Republic,’’ he said.

The cleric called on the faithful to “continue to cry to God for peace and justice and security throughout the world.

He added that those suffering such appalling treatment in Iraq are especially in his prayers at this time.

Welby also expressed support for aid efforts for those who have been displaced and are able to find safety.

“I believe that, like France, the United Kingdom’s doors should be open to refugees, as they have been throughout history,’’ he said.

Food for thought…how come other religions dont feel the need to massacre others as a result of their faith??? y is it always muslims round the world that think this is ok(not referring to moderate muslims) because once a war is religious, it is alwaysssss muslims killing other faiths for no other reason….very SAD. There has to be something deep in islam that steers a lot of its followers to violence that they believe is right

Ade yu too go and find your facts. Israel is occupying Palestinian land since the 40’s and have been killing Palestinians long before Hamas was formed. The occupation forced them to form Hamas. I wonder if yu will run your mouth if yu had a land and someone wakes up one day and takes over it, killing and displacing your family in the process
ISIS though I really don’t understand those people. They are terrorists just like Israel na the same boat them waka come from

Something must fundamentally be wrong. This is definitely not any commandment from God. Its absolute evil and impersonation of God. God is the only ONE with rights to judge those He created. When one human or a group of lunatics see themselves more self righteous and decide to shove their belief down others throat, then they clearly are a societal hazard.

How can man be so cruel. Cut people’s head and hang on poles, shoot people like garbage. The footage i have seen is unspeakable all in the name of Islam. So Islam says they should kill other muslims too. We need God, drone attacks have never solved this completely. A supernatural hand needs to take action.

Kill them all, Obama. Spare no terrorist. Something is definitely wrong about this religion. A very fundamental problem.

Religion is just an excuse for human idiocy, wickedness and lust for power…if it’s not religion, it’s ethnicity, if it’s not ethnicity, it’s race, if it is not race, it’s what somebody’s ancestors did two thousand years ago. The problem with people who carry out these atrocities is they often don’t realise how ill their leaders are. Most of these leaders like Hitler, Putin, George Bush, Osama bin Laden suffer from one mental illness or the other or have huge daddy issues, and the mumus just carry follow them killing people. The human race sometimes…acts worse than a disease.

…..speechless. I have met some people who are of the opinion that Islam was never a religion from the onset, but a political tool. A tool created on the foundation of violence and total submission. Some features of other religion was added to Islam to create the impression or illusion of a religion however in the real sense of it All, it’s just a political weapon that forces submission on its followers and non followers.

What you said makes sense when you look at the life and teachings of its founder and model, especially how he treated non-Muslims. Unfortunately many Muslims don’t mind repeating similar actions even though this is the 21st century. What makes this case particularly thought-provoking is that some of these Islamists are highly educated, middle class and civilised, people you would not expect such barbarism from.

Blaise Pascal was right when he said, “Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.”
