NYPD Officer Walks Free After Killing Unarmed African American Man Eric Garner

Widespread protests have erupted in New York after a Staten Island grand jury on Wednesday refused to indict an NYPD officer who killed an unarmed African American man.

Eric Garner, 43, was killed by a White 29-year-old police officer Daniel Pantaleo, after putting him in a choke hold while trying to arrest him because they suspected he was selling untaxed cigarettes, NBC reports. Garner, who was reportedly asthmatic, died shortly after the incident.

According to reports, the NYPD’s patrol guide explicitly prohibits choke holds.

Here’s a video of the arrest, which went viral shortly after the incident, which occurred in July 2014:

A medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, stating that “compression of the neck and chest, along with Garner’s positioning on the ground while being restrained by police during the July 17 stop on Staten Island, caused his death.”

The grand jury’s decision to end the criminal case against Pantaleo has been condemned by elected officials and sparked off a wave of protests.

In the aftermath of the grand jury’s ruling the  hashtag #BlackLivesMatter began trending on Twitter:

This is so sad. Thank God I’m not a black in US today. I’d rather swallow all the corruption in Nigeria everyday than be made to feel like a lesser human being in my country.

That is how they are stylishly killing blacks in the US, in the name of ‘doing my job, safeguarding he American people’. Are black American citizens not Americans again?

I would have voted different. This was very wrong! There was a video tape! The ME said it was homicide! It seems prosecutors are now misusing the grand jury process.
This shows the split in America between the right and left (or is it fox and msnbc?). It is now very difficult to get a majority of Americans to agree (talk less of a super majority)..
Bringing this back to naija: let’s not say that it is better to be black in nigeria. Police kill people here everyday and nothing happens! ‘Soldiers’ kill people everyday and nothing happens. Are the Nigerians killed not citizens in their own country? Are they less Nigerians than other nigerians. I think we should start by trying to get our justice system to approach western ones. No system is perfect – not even the western ones.

Horrible situation. How can man be so evil???? Are we still looking for the devil?? He is walking among us at home, at work , in the malls and even paid to protect us. 4 hefty men pouncing on this man. The US is crumbling. Considering this is dreamland for many but these days no one can tell if their son, daughter, wife or husband would go out and come back safe.

These world scares me. Sincerely we need God. Justice, Education, technology etc have all failed.

In the western world ‘black’ is ‘black’ whether u hold American passport or European passport makes no difference to the White man. They are constantly hating’ just knowing that you even have the opportunity to enjoy same citizenship rights as they do. Truth be told, the color of your skin comes first before the color of your passport is considered. It’s a fact of life that you will always be treated lesser as a minority group. Same discrimination also applies in Nigeria among ethnic groups , so it’s a fact of life. If you have chosen to be in diaspora or as a black American caught in that unchangeable situation, my advice is keep ur head up, try to always be one step ahead of the law and count your gains ( something is definitely encouraging you to live there). That being said, the rate at which blacks are being unjustly killed on the streets of America is alarming and the more these crimes go unpunished, the more cases we can expect. I am a mom and it breaks my heart to think what those mothers and families pass through. God help us!!

African Americans get kill by white cops just because they resist arrest and aways try to fight or go for the officer’s gun. White folks are scared of black guys. They shoot if any nigger resist arrest and scuffle them. If people stop resisting arrest and scuffling with the cops no shooting will occur. If they continue resisting and scuffling with the police, the police will shoot and claim self defense and get away with murder. In my 15yrs in America, african Americans are more racist to africans more than white folks. This is base on my own experience.

Hold on though! I understand we are all angry including myself. But we have to understand that the legal system is flawed. Essentially the jury can only provide a verdict on what was presented to them in the court, this means that most likely they were not presented sufficient evidence to indict the officer, even if some of them knew he should have been!!

The chokehold itself was banned by NYPD but not the state! These type of double standards in the law are the reason why these type of verdicts come out. It may have less to do with racism and more to do with legal system than we think.
