Published

Wasilu Umaru is free at last. Murder charges leveled against the 14-year-old child bride who killed her 35-year-old husband because she did not love him and was forced to marry him, have been dropped.

According to BBC, the Kano State attorney general stated that the case would be dropped because Umaru is a minor, and also because the victim’s family have forgiven her.

Reports further state that “charges against the girl will be formally dropped once the court receives either a written or oral presentation from the office of Kano’s attorney general.”

so wat happens next, what will be her state of mind, any plans to assist in furthering her education?any provision of her safety cos the families of the victim may not take it lightly with her family, any effort of trying to stop this disgusting act of marrying an under age,but in all am glad she was discharge of the crime, and to the deceased rest in pieces or should i say burn in hell.

true o @ Iris. some miscreant may decide to avenge the husband. in fact let her leave the state, go somewhere her identity will be hidden. even now when she goes to school, she will be looked at differently, hence she will have a more difficult childhood, let her go and start afresh somewhere mbok.

Take a back seat please. What do you know about the criminal justice system? She took someone’s life which is a crime. The issue of her being a minor has got nothing to do with charges preferred against her. Such may only affect her sentence if she’s convicted. There’s no legislation anywhere in the world that says charges cannot be brought against a minor. Age only affects the punishment on conviction. Try a little reading before jumping to hasty albeit erroneous conclusions.

Hugo if you want attention say something useful and dont resort to rudeness! with my ignorance about the legal system i know cases go to conference to consider the factors and circumstances surrounding it to help the prosecutor determine whether s/he wants to press charges. You dont rush such absurdities to the court room to waste the time and resources of the public. People molesting minors in the name of marriage!!!

Hugo, with my ignorance about the criminal justice system i know the prosecutor of the case should hold a conference on the case to determine the circumstances of the case to determine whether to prosecute or not. In this case :
a has been abused by being forced into marriage
she is probably been molested in the name of conjugal rights
then she defends herself against violation of her bodily integrity

You mean a prosecutor overlooked all these and decided to prosecute? of course it was going no where!
In any case, why are you so worked up, does the cap fit you?

Agree with you all; while we gladly welcome the news, it’s clear that this girl can’t go back to her former community to live. I’m here hoping that NGOs in the area are already working on a plan for her life ahead. Who knows, maybe she’ll be back to that community in 10 years with the goal of helping other young girls who face the same future that she escaped.

I am sooooo glad, and so relieved all this nonsense is behind the poor girl. Imagine being that age and having to go through being a child bride, the murder, and the ensuring legal issues. Oooh I just want to give her a hug whatever help that does to her. Personally, I don’t care if the victim’s family go to hell. He was a grown man marrying, and intending to bed a 14 year old?!?! WHAT DOES THEIR FORGIVENESS HAVE TO DO WITH HER FREEDOM! “Umaru is a minor” yet no one in her community was batting an eyelid when she was being married off. But lets get her off murder because she is a “minor”. Oh this does my head in. Regardless, I will celebrate this freedom despite its being wrapped in akara paper.

As much as I’m happy the girl has finally being released reading your comments are making me scared, what’s wrong with humanity, a person lost his life, he also is a victim, she could have tried to runaway but chose to end another’s life, nobody here is acknowledging that someone lost his life or died in the process, does loss of life not mean anything to any1, we have double standards if roles were reversed and it was a guy that killed a girl we’ll be shouting he shouldn’t go scot free, I’m happy they’ve released the girl sha, but I hope now that she’s been released she has gone thru real penance and won’t kill the next person who doesn’t agree with her.
