Read a Lagos State Civil Servant Retiree’s Desperate Plea for help

A retired Lagos State civil servant, Tunde Agoro, has pleaded with the Lagos State government to intervene on his behalf to stop the construction of the pedestrian bridge in front of his private residence, along Gbagada –Oshodi Expressway, Anthony, Lagos.

After making several futile attempts to draw the attention of concerned stakeholders in the government to his plight, the 84-year-old decided to write to the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure. The letter was acknowledged and a stakeholders’ meeting was held, with the commissioner and some engineers from the Ministry of Works in attendance.

When the meeting still did not yield any positive results, the desperate retiree who joined the Civil Service in 1966 and retired in 1984 decided to use legal means to stop or relocate the construction of the bridge by Julius Berger to the previously chosen position for it. That, too, proved abortive, as the construction began in earnest yesterday.

The retiree is now calling on the Lagos State government to look into this issue because the construction of the bridge right in front of his house will not only infringe on his privacy but will also pose a threat to his life and security as the site would be turned into a major bus-stop.

“It’s obvious that the interest and safety of affected residents were not considered before this project was embarked upon. This is not the Lagos I know. We need an environmental expert to tell the government the implication of this project, should they insist on continuing with this project, despite a court order to put it on hold,” he said, in an interview with City People.
