University of Benin Suspends Ongoing Post-UTME Exercise Following FG’s Directive

Published

 on

unibenThe Management of University of Benin has suspended the ongoing Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) exercise following the Federal Government’s directive on its cancellation by tertiary institutions nationwide.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Micheal Osasuyi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) of the suspension on Tuesday in Benin.

“Management has just announced the suspension of the exercise following the federal government directive. We regret any inconveniences this may have caused parents and prospective students as a new date for the screening will be communicated in due course,” he said.

On the N2,000 post UTME fees, Osasuyi said: “No decision has been taken on that. But all Vice Chancellors of the universities have been invited to a meeting in Abuja. I guess that will be part of the decision that will be taken,” he said.

NAN reports that the institution had earlier commenced screening for prospective undergraduates on Monday with some of the students writing a computer based test.

Others were already seated for Tuesday’s screening when the announcement of the cancellation was made.

Some of the students who participated in the exercise told NAN that they spent between N3,500 and N5,000 in the purchase of the admission screening forms, including on-line registration.

They said they had to answer about 75 questions in one hour.

Before the cancellation, the exercise which commenced Monday was slated to end on July 9th.

NAN reports that the Federal Ministry of Education had on Monday reiterated the ban on Post-UTME conducted by tertiary institutions for admission into universities and other higher schools of learning in the country.

“The ban is with immediate effect and under no circumstance should any institution violate the directive. Those who have already advertised for the conduct of the Post-UTME under any guise should stop the exercise immediately,” the ministry had said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in May 1976 to gather and distribute news on Nigeria and cover events of interest to Nigeria at the international level for the benefit of the Nigerian Media and the Public.

I think the opinion of Adamu won the race because, universities conduct utme exams but yet there are some students that are being expelled from school due to their low performance. Per-se, It’s not all university students are brilliant, so let this idea be established. Who soever that want to help him/herself should act in accordance to the rule of success.

Nice one, they should stop extorting people all in the name of pumte, how can a student write waec, neco, gce, neco gce, jamb and then pumte before they could be admitted into any higher school of learning, moreover this pumte is just an easy venture for the university to make money nothing more,it should be scrapped.

This is wickedness…haba. Risking these kids life from different states and making their parents waste their money only to start saying rubbish about it, why didn’t they confirm all these things first before letting these kids undergo all this. God will reward everyone duly.

i kept asking myself do those people that find joy in post utme, do they in their time undergo same double exams of Jamb and post jamb. majority of them went to school through scholarship but today they make every thing so difficult and expenses to the citizenry.

allow me give u an insite on what really transpired.over 38,000 candidates who scored 200 and above in UTME are alleged to be considered for admission should the scraping of the PUTME be effected but the Nigeria University Council(NUC) approved only 8,000 slot for UNIBEN. With this slot,i say it is beyond the realms of possility for UNIBEN to adhere to NUC’s ethics without conducting a screening exercise(PUTME).
There will be no need for UNIBEN to conduct a PUTME should the slot bracket allocated to universities be lifted(ie a university can admit as many candidates that apply for admission) or increased. The problem therefore is not UNIBEN but NUC.

The truth is that, regarding the number of students that took uniben as their most preferred choice. The university must do something to test the ability of the prospective applicant before admitting them in to their various courses..So the federal govt just hv to Concord with the idea of the university management and let them go on with the screening exercise to avoid waste of money nd stress especially for we that hv already written ours on Monday.

It’s easy for the FG to make this decision without considering the students thought on this and how it will affect them.Students are waiting for news on this, day in and day out waiting for the verdict of the school they applied for;the point is he should have made this decision way before jamb exam for 2016 took place and not at the last minute when schools were already prepared to write the Post utme exam .I think we all know were the fault lies let just prey and wait for the final verdict
