Finding good people can be difficult and at least every week someone in my network reaches out about hiring for their #side hustle or business. It can be really daunting, especially when you’re starting out finding and retaining the best talent with a limited budget of a small business.

    thanks alot for this insight cos i’m having issues with just this as i’m about to take a bold step into entrepreneurship and i have been asking myself where i’m going to get people to work for me so this just might help.

    In the Western world, many success stories started with groups of friends in schools creating something with NO ONE getting paid AT ALL. They come together, sacrifice and create something and got equity and later money when/if it became successful. Even when it wasn’t successful, they learned from their mistakes and went on to create other successful ventures, but we in third world countries, with our subpar skills and tech want to be paid the first day we show up. Ngwanu! Jokers. I did several internships, even one for a celebrity I’m slightly older than, but Nigerians don’t want to hear that. Sorry to say, but many Nigerians are unemployable skill wise and the ones who know what they are doing cost too much. There is also this thing in some cultures about not “worshipping other peoples heads,” by working for them… God help u…

    Hello Honey,

    I’m mighty glad you’re doing this… nice watch. As far as hiring….phew! it is a crazy matter….Hiring office staff is one kettle of fish…hiring artisanal staff nko? that one needs some kind of special MBA. How do you build a studio of tailors for instance… they have been my biggest dilemma. here today, gone tomorrow…. I applied the referral rule with my Studio assistants and now have more constant flow. I feel like I am constantly on the ‘hiring’ wheel…. it can be draining… business needs to expand, as we’re struggling to meet demand…. so I need every hiring miracle I can get, just not sure what else to try…I cant really afford a lot of salary increase, our minimum salary is 30k, plus accommodation or transport allowance… others get 45-50 only one gets up to 80k….then biannual bonus…..I don’t know what else to try. Is this a competitive pay package or do we need to consider raises?
    We have also tried outsourcing….but it is very heavy on logistics and quality management is more draining. I am limited in how much moving around I can do sometimes, given that a lot of artisans are not tech dependent for their work- it doesn’t help matters….so I leave outsourcing as Plan D or even later…. its an ongoing struggle to balance it out…
    .I just know I need new alternatives cos I am always drained…thankful for God and the current team who have been holding us down though, just trying to minimise and eliminate delays.

    Also how do you pitch ‘equity pay’ to a proposed staff…how does it work? anyone pls…?
