Ngozi Adebiyi: What Are You Incapable Of?

When expressed, the genius in people is a beauty to behold.

When we hear of the great feats performed by mankind in different spheres of human existence, such as going to the moon, overcoming gravity in flight, discovering quantum physics, creating music, creative writing, establishing Disneyland, eradicating small pox, conquering Mount Everest…the list goes on and on, we are reminded of the huge ability possessed by humans.

Potential is a loaded word in the English vocabulary. A word with meanings such as reserved power, untapped strength, unused or dormant ability.

Potential is simply “having or showing the capacity to develop into something in the future”

When we look at a seed, you would be naïve to think all the seed could become is how it exists in its current state.

Most things are usually more than they appear. Beneath the casing –whatever it might be- are abilities beyond human comprehension.

On our leadership journey, when we think in terms of potential, we begin to unravel one of the most important questions in life: What are you incapable of?

Like the popular sculptor Michelangelo who used to walk around a block of marble for days, talking to himself and trying to see what he could free from the massive piece of rock before him, life would demand that you see others and more importantly yourself through the lenses of your potential.

What are you incapable of? Where are you lacking the necessary physical or mental ability to become more than you currently are? Again through the eyeglasses of potential, there is absolutely nothing you cannot become if you dare to dream it and apply yourself to work.

It is amazing what a human being can make of him or herself by obeying the simple principles of dreaming and applying themselves.

Dreaming includes sustaining a mindset of possibilities in your field and refusing to see failure as an option.

Like water droplets and their undeterred poise in carrying out the task at hand – wearing away huge piece of stone – stay the course through hard work.

Never relent in giving the required commitment in making a path through the rock of life in fields that concern you deeply. A lot of time, the path of least resistance leads nowhere significant.

The truth is this: What are you incapable of? NOTHING.
