8 Killed, 18 Injured after Gunman attacked Anambra Church during ServiceThe police in Anambra on Sunday confirmed that a gunman killed eight worshipers and injured 18 others in an early morning attack on St. Philip Catholic Church, Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area.

The Commissioner of Police, Garba Umar, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka that the remains of the dead had been deposited at Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi.

Umar also said that the injured were taken to the hospital.

He said that preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the attack was carried out by a native of the area.

“From our findings, it is very clear that the person who carried the attack must be an indigene of the area.

We gathered that worshipers for 6 o’clock Sunday mass at St. Philip Ozobulu were in the service when a gunman dressed in black attire covering his face with a cap entered the church and moved straight to a particular direction and opened fire.

The man after shooting at his targeted victims still went on a shooting spree, killing and wounding other worshipers,’’ he said.

The commissioner said information available to police showed that the attacker was speaking undiluted Igbo Language at the time he was firing at worshipers.

Umar said though no arrest had been made but that the police already learnt that the attack followed a quarrel between two natives of Ozubulu residing overseas.

Describing the act as sacrilegious, the commissioner of police said it was wrong for the perpetrators of the act to extend their quarrel into the church.

He added: “such conduct shows the people behind the act do not fear God.’’

He said the police had launched a manhunt on those behind the act and gave an assurance that everybody behind the act will be brought to justice.

Umar described any insinuation that the attack was carried out by Boko Haram elements as false and urged the people to go about their normal businesses.

He said the police is on top of the situation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in May 1976 to gather and distribute news on Nigeria and cover events of interest to Nigeria at the international level for the benefit of the Nigerian Media and the Public.

The police should do their investigation well.
While at it,let’s have an open mind. The perpetrator(s), could be anyone. No exemptions at this point. That someone spoke fluent Igbo does not make them Igbo. …just saying.
    RIP to the dead!

I am just wondering what an Umar is doing in Anambra state. Does he know better than the people who speak same language or isn’t language vital in security network.

I am taking this comments by the Commissioner with a ‘bag of salt’
Speaking a language fluently does not prove a thing. I speak both Yoruba and Igbo fluently and very many Nigerians can speak at least two languages.
Even if it is established that the man is Igbo, it doesn’t still prove he has no ties to Boko Haram.
I really pray they will undertake these investigation with all seriousness, we don’t want another region under siege…
And the Commissioner doth protest too much, it makes me uncomfortable; he sounds really invested in making sure the incident is not linked to Boko Haram…

I’m an indigiene of amakwa ozubulu. That piece of information up there is actually far from the truth.
*ozubulu is a a town famous for producing more that a handful of drug billionaires
*these billionaires (all based in SA) have been feuding for a while and have resulted to a couple of dozen deaths amongst them (all shot in cold blood)
*the billionaires have the traditional ruler in their pocket so he can’t intervene
*the said church was built by one of them (actually their leader) since the ongoing feud in SA he has been been on and off resident in ozubulu and this attack I believe was meant for him. I think his dad was hit
*actual number of deaths are in the twenties and total number casualties should be around 47

Really sad! But why kill 47 other innocent men, women and children? These drug men are into many things. How can a drug lord donate a church?and it was accepted? Bishop in charge of that parish should reject it asap. Blood monies spills blood!

When churches are willing to be funded by every ans any source of financial inflow, it becomes a war zone. It becomes as unsafe as the slums . Sad how churches indiscriminately allows itself to be governed by miscreants all because of money

Guys visit naira land. …they have a more authentic version of the story. The gunmen were hired assassins sent to kill a particular rumored drug baron who was said to have attended that particular mass.
