Omilola Oshikoya Writes Open Letter to Daddy Freeze on the Subject of Tithing

Dear Daddy Freeze,

I must first of all commend you for being brave enough to talk about a lot of things that a lot of people aren’t able to talk about. We have noticed some of the atrocities performed in some churches (not all) but we haven’t been bold enough to address them. Whilst I do not agree with your style and everything you say, I must applaud your boldness. As with anything in life, there is good and there is bad and you have begun to unveil some of the false teaching taught by so many and followed by so many.  I agree that there are a lot of people who are worshipping money and are preaching a false doctrine. The Bible says by their fruits you shall know them. With regards to denomination, I grew up a staunch catholic (my parents are still catholic) and I also became Pentecostal as well but now I’d rather refer to myself as The Fathers daughter as that is what my identity is. Our identity is not based on denomination and the denomination you belong too does not determine whether you are allowed in Heaven or not. In the catholic church there are priests who molest children and in the Vatican there are also some corrupt leaders, the same way in the Pentecostal church there are pastors who molest their congregation mentally and sexually and also steal from them financially. This is the same with other denominations in the church as well. That being said there are also many people in all denominations that have the right heart condition and serve and love God genuinely. One thing I must also commend you for is the fact that a lot of people are now reading their Bibles and seeking a personal relationship with God. In the past people took what their Priests or Pastors said hook line and sinker or worshipped their Priest/Pastors but man is man and even the best of man can err or be wrong. It is important that we all have a personal relationship with the Father. This is why Jesus came and this is why after he was crucified, the veil at the temple tore from top to bottom. He gave us all access into the Holy of holies.

You have also revealed that a lot of people in leadership do not actually bear the fruit of the spirit which according to Galatians 5:22-23is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 13“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.  And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned,[a] but have not love, it profits me nothing.”

This highlights the fact that it is important we pray for all our leaders. We too need prayers. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 10:12 “Theerefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.”

With regards to tithing, I’m not here to argue scripture with you. Scripture is very important and I read my Bible daily however we can both read the same thing and get different revelations. Infact I can read a Bible verse today and read it again another day and get a different revelation. Also if a person is an illiterate and doesn’t know how to read the Bible or never gets the chance to but has given his or her life to Jesus, I believe this person would still go to Heaven whether or not they have ever read the Bible or not. The way we live our lives is the only Bible that some people will ever get to read. More importantly in reading the scriptures we cannot use intellect but we must allow the Holy Spirit to lead and teach us John 14:26says “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you”.The Bible in 1Corinthians 2:14says But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

The most important thing in our journey is a personal relationship with God. In this relationship, the Father will speak to you and guide you in what you need to do and not do.  Christianity is not a religion and it is not based on rules or guidelines.  It is a way of life and a personal relationship with the Father. All the entire Bible and infact all of creation does is to reveal Jesus from beginning to the end. For example, the cup bearer and the baker in Josephs story reveals the sacrifice Jesus was going to pay on our behalf and this is depicted through Holy Communion. Solomon asked for wisdom and in Proverbs 8, the Bible talks about how wisdom is Jesus. David was a man after Gods heart and in Revelations 5: 5 and Revelations 22:16the Bible says Jesus is the Root of David.  The new testament starts with the geneology of Jesus, so in essence the old testament is a story leading up to the birth of Jesus. The New testament i.e. the Gospel shows the life of Jesus and the rest shows how the disciples took Him to the world and His return.

Now the issue of tithing but before I write on this, let me start by saying that the rich men (Africa’s richest man and the richest man on earth who is in technology) who you refer to a lot in your posts, actually own absolutely nothing. I reiterate they own nothing. If Africa’s richest man were to die today, He would not even take the bed sheet that his body will be wrapped in. He won’t even take the body he is borrowing. Everything He has accumulated will remain on earth and will be redistributed by the owner of all things, God. Even if he wills it to his kids, the Lord still decides whether the wealth will be sustained or be squandered. God owns everything and we are only custodians. The Bible in Deuteronomy 8: 18says “And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth,”.  So God doesn’t need our 10%. Neither is there a curse over you if you don’t pay 10% tithe. He already owns everything anyway whether we accept it or not or whether we believe in Him or not. So in essence the way I understand it is that God owns 100% of my income and everything I own and He decides how He wants me to spend it. Personally, I tithe and my tithe is more than 10% as directed by the Lord and I am blessed as a result. You may be asking that why is it that the men I referred to earlier who aren’t Christians and don’t tithe but are still considered the world’s wealthiest (according to man)? Well the answer is that there are laws and principles that guide money and whether or not you are a believer once you apply those laws, you will make money. Also, when it comes to wealth, a person’s current networth cannot really determine whether they are truly wealthy or not. God is a generational God. I do not know if Africa’s richest man’s wealth will outlive him. For me the true test of wealth is when wealth outlives the founder even decades after death, like in the case of Henry Parsons Crowell of the famous Quaker Oats.

Henry Parsons Crowell founded Quaker Oats and was an extraordinary Christian business man. He brought oat meal to Americas breakfast table. Prior to this oat meal was eating by horses. He sought the Lords counsel in all His business endeavours and He received so many ground breaking ideas from the Lord. He pioneered the use of celebrity endorsements. Many of his marketing strategies are still being used today. The more He gave to God and Christian causes the more he prospered. Together with his wife, many corporate giants came to Christ.  They gave to more than a hundred Christian organisations including the Moody Bible Institute. He died in 1943 after giving away more than 70% of his wealth over 40 years from an initial tithe of 10%. Even after his death, still today, Quaker oats continues to be a market leader and continues to make more than $10 billion a year. The company owns Aunt Jemima and also own the Snapple Beverage company amongst many other companies. Today as I drove in Lagos, I saw many billboards of Quaker Oats.

You may also want to research on other billionaires who gave to the Kingdom and whose wealth is generational for example Henry John Heinz of Heinz Ketchup. I am hosting an insta live series starting next week so you can join the conversation. These are men who are wealthy and gave their all to God.

Now back to the issue of tithing, like I mentioned before God owns 100% of my wealth and in our personal relationship He decides what I do with it. There are times I have had to give someone in need 100% of what I have at that point in time, whether it’s a poor person or just someone with a need. There was a time when God asked me to give 100% (net of tithes) of what I had at the time to help someone pay her daughters fees.  In our personal relationship, He has also asked me to pay tithe in the church that I feed from spiritually. I pay a lot more than 10% and have been increasing this as often as I am led to by the Holy Spirit and I will continue to do so as led by the Holy Spirit. He determines how His money is being spent. I don’t do it because there is a curse attached if I don’t but out my love relationship with the Father, I obey Him.

Now why am I comfortable doing this? First of all my Pastor, Pastor Wale Adefarasin is a man of integrity. The church Guiding Light Assembly is also structured properly as an organisation and it is not a one man’s business. The finances and activities of our church are managed by a Board of Trustees.  My pastor is paid a salary and the church account is separate from his account. His main occupation is a pastor and he has no other side dealings and as a pastor, he is being paid a salary. He is a very conservative and a very humble man and not excessive in anyway. I see Jesus in Him.  The tithes of our church are used to promote the gospel and we do this through different means. There is a discipleship course we run that helps people become more Christ like and we have people from different denominations and churches that come to be a part of it. There are three courses namely Masterlife, Experiencing God and The Mind of Christ. It is absolutely free to attend and it is financed by the church. The books that are used in the course cost a lot of money and the church bears this responsibility. People who have passed through the discipleship course include Mrs Bukky George of Health Plus Limited, she is not even a member of our church etc. Many people across different industries who are successful and are also impacting our country and sphere of influence have done it. Lives are being changed and people are impacting Nigeria as a result of character building. I can say that the discipleship courses have played a big role in my life and this is one of the reasons the Lord has led me to impact lives all over the world and in Nigeria with my book, The Richer Woman and also through the Do It Afraid conferences which has led many millennials starting businesses even in a recession.

We have also adopted the Obalande community and have played pivotal roles in upgrading the lives of citizens through our various activities which includes feeding hundreds of widows, the elderly and children weekly, health care treatments, bore hole construction etc We have a business fund that has helped people start businesses and provides mentorship. We have an education endowment fund that educates many people. We also have a talk show, The Heart of the Matter that I co-host which airs on Ebony Life TV and impacts people all over Africa and the world.

These are just a few of the things that the church is using our tithes and offering to fund. There are no conditions or cajoling. We give as led by the Holy Spirit and out of love. The vision of the church is “building leaders, changing our world”and this is what we focus on. We are not perfect but we are genuinely following Christ.

You may ask how do I know all these things. After working in investment banking for over 10 years, I worked in the media department of the church office for three years as a staff.

Asides from Guiding Light Assembly, there are also other churches that use their tithes and funds the right way. Not all churches squander tithes and not all Pastors are false.

Personally, I may not be able to directly impact all these various outlets but the money that I give to the church is used to help all these people and I am happy to do so. Asides from my tithe I also continue to give different causes as led by the Spirit of God. My husband and I have used our resources (time, money and effort) to impact Nigeria even in a recession. As led by God, we have funded international standard conferences to showcase wealth creation opportunities for Nigerians in the recession without any financial sponsors. One of which was the Do It Afraid conferences and the Do It Afraid Agribusiness entrepreneurship workshop where we showcased the different opportunities in agriculture. As a result, many people who lost jobs have started agribusinesses and other businesses across different sectors. Some of these businesses include Nellies, Eventecture, Package Plus etc. We could use our funds for other things but it is a privilege to use our money to fund Gods causes whether in the church or in society.

I do hope that one day we would get to discuss these issues face to face however in the interim I do hope that I have provided some clarity in certain issues. Pastor Mensa Otabil discussed tithing backed with scripture at a conference at Fountain of Life church, you can also watch the sermon.

Whilst you go on your mission, I would like to suggest that you do so in love. Jesus came preaching love. Everything that He did was in love. Even when He was crucified by the very people that He came to set free, He said Father forgive them for they know not what they do.

Preach love, teach love and show love. Remember 1 Corinthians 13.

God bless you Daddy Freeze and may the love of Jesus Christ abide with you always.

P.s. I watched your teaching on the rainbow and love that it is your logo, interestingly the Holy Spirit asked me to do some research on the rainbow and I wrote about it in my blog www.thefathersdaughterweb.wrodpress.com.

christianity is an european creation meant to favor the europeans…

If you are a black person and a christian then you will knowing or unknowingly promote european supremacy.. same thing with muslims who promote arab supremacy.

the tithes you pay were meant to be paid to european owned churches if “independence” was not given…

the church is not an institution you can purchase so the best way to acquire it is to get rid of it by turning indigenous christians against each other..

freeze is just a tool for a bigger plan. freeze is mixed race and closer to his mum who is not Nigerian, so the subjugation of “Nigerians” will favor him, Ben B,,,,,, e.t.c

Nigerians continue to claim that people are brainwashed, because they go to church, give offering or pay tithe.

brainwashed how, offering and tithe are voluntary, and you can choose to pay or not. You can feel forced if you feel so, but truth is there is no force.

imagine if someone comes to you and says i gave offering or gave someone money, or this, or that, it is not anyone’s business.

daddy freeze has successfully created confusion in nigeria. on the streets, at bars, everywhere now is tithe topic, who has paid, who has not, who can and who cant.

      is this what nigeria needs.

a failed four years, no progress, no obvious way out, all people can do is to explain bible and be smart over tithes.

i do not know the mind of adeboye, but maybe he was telling his members that if you are doing everything, try to pay your tithes too about going to heaven. who knows?

if he’s right or if he’s wrong, everyone will eventually find out someday.

but this debate is too dead, to foolish, and really hopeless for a kind of nation that is so underdeveloped, and almost no future for many. no good proposals or anything.

shame on you daddy freeze, shame and disgrace on you

I applaud you Omilola. I love where you said ‘ Whilst you go on your mission, I would like to suggest that you do so in love.’’ this was needed because Daddy Freeze is always quick to throw out insults when people do not agree with him or even insult him, it makes me wonder what he truly stands for. We are so busy arguing about 10% of Cash that God has blessed us with that we have forgetten our purpose as Christians. I pray God opens the heart of more Christians because at this rate, Heaven go empty oh. I truly and really just want to live for Jesus, that’s all that matters to me. God bless you all .

There is no such thing as “that is a personal revelation”, for “no scripture is of private interpretation” (2 Pet 1:20). This is more so the case when a doctrinal issue is at stake. Historically, there are revered scholars on both sides of the debate. But I have realised you cannot justify tithing as a christian practice without doing theological somersaults and interpretative rigmarole. Thank goodness we live in a free world, but christian leaders should desist from manipulative measures aimed at condemning the vulnerable. The “name and shame” technique being advocated by a leading figure recently is below the belt.

Read in another translation before jumping or quoting out of context: no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things.

Well said madam. The bottom line is ‘give yourself to humanity for its prosperity and edification’. Our men of God should simply de-emphasize sermons on MONEY MONEY MONEY as if it is the foundation of the Kingdom of God. I don’t believe it’s right when some men of God take advantage of their status or calling to armtwist and intimidate members into following doctrines that are subject to conjecture and personal interpretation. The Church is not any different from the World if all we do is MONETISE every Kingdom endeavor. The ‘Love of Money’ sermon is more appropriate to many (if not most) of our GOs and church founders in this present time than to many ordinary innocent church goers… God help us ooo….

I think what has been missing in this engagement on tithes has been the manner the discourse has been handled on both sides of the argument and Daddy Freeze has been especially guilty of that. I am however thankful that he was used to open this discussion and help to nourish many people’s understanding on why they need to give their tithes.
I believe in tithing because I want to support my local assembly in what it does. We are not pressured to a tithes. I attend covenant Christian center and in my about a decade of attending the church, not once has my pastor pressured the church in the area of money. People give oit of the love they have for the work God is doing in the local Assembly.
Love is the Christian’s identity. It is what Christ commands us to do. So whether we believe in tithing or we do not, it is the love with which we show christ that matters. The early church gave ALL. If they did that, what is a tenth of it to cause a Christian any discomfort? The difference is they loved the God they serve so intensely that even Stephen while being matyred was still demonstrating love to his murderers. What then is money? The issue is a love one. Find a local Assembly whose work you believe in and whose leadership walk the talk and support the work there.

The early church gave all they had to christ by giving for direct distribution to the needy, but the church today collect tithes and offerings and share it among the pastor and other church leadership, with little to church activities. that’s the difference between the early church giving and today’s churches

Good one dear. But you keep forgetting. Tithing is of the law. The law brings a curse. you cannot cherrypick one and leave the others. Jesus gave us a simple commandment. Love God and love your neighbor in this all of the law is crunched into. It was revealed to me that only with the holy spirit you can actually love God and your neighbor. Tithing is deleted with the law and changed to giving. Not you don’t give 10% you give any percentage without grudge. 0%~100%. As the spirit leads. With the spirit in you, you can you give because you love. Only with the holy Spirit you can keep these simple commandment of Christ. Daddyfreeze is only trying to stop people from giving money to people who are making merchandise of the Gospel. A pastor is like a mature Christian, his duty is to make mature Christians (with Holy spirit dwelling) out of them. What we see are people still struggling with sin because they aren’t Christians yet. They are still baby converts for years in the same church because the pastor’s are just gathering them unto themselves. The link is so strong that anyone who talk against their pastor seems like blasphemy.

The law along with tithing, sacrifice, priesthood is like a draft, it’s incomplete, faulty, a copy of the original one. Jesus came to perfect it. Jesus was the last sacrifice (crucified at the time the Passover lambs were sacrificed), the last priest (the veil in the temple was torn, he’s now the priest in the original temple (holy of holies) not built by human hands in heaven). Giving is a by product of the spirit living in a Christian. It’s an act of love. Not an investment for God’s blessing.

Most people will deny this, they tithe to receive financial blessing from God. They will deny it, they don’t do it for love.

There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.
    Hebrews 5:11‭-‬14 NLT
    https://bible.com/bible/116/heb.5.11-14.NLT

Rather, I am a sinner if I rebuild the old system of law I already tore down. For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law—I stopped trying to meet all its requirements—so that I might live for God. My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
    Galatians 2:18‭-‬20 NLT
    https://bible.com/bible/116/gal.2.18-20.NLT

For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.

Good afternoon dear BROTHER. Just to say AMEN and THANK YOU for this response. I share the SAME view. TITHING to me belongs to the LAW and there people are just OBEYING, it is somehow COMPULSORY. But GIVING is a FREE WILL, WITH ALL your heart. I can give even more than 20% to GOD(assist the WIDOWS, ORPHANS etc) but my SPIRIT does NOT accept TITHING. That is my STAND and ONLY GOD can make me change it by TELLING it to me DIRECTLY. FATHER GOD please give us a CLEAR STAND towards this issue. Many FAKE “pastors” are STEALING from their congregations with it. Have a GREAT day and stay BLESSED 🙂 🙂 🙂

“Most people will deny this, they tithe to receive financial blessing from God. They will deny it, they don’t do it for love.”
This is the crux of the matter. At the end of the day, most people tithe for selfish reasons.

      Well done John!

“The Scriptures are words on paper; the reader projects his hopes and aspirations in the interpretation of it” – Reza Aslan (religious scholar). If you are a greedy person your interpretation of the scriptures will project greed. I do not understand this transactional relationship people want to have with God. Remember he has given you everything that pertains to life (2 Pet 1:3). And the man who offered money to receive a spiritual gift was cursed by Peter: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!” (Acts 8:20). So those who think God will bless them because they donated money should have a re-think. Greed is the foundation of the prosperity gospel; if you money legitimately start a business.

It’s so clear the Spirit is one. For those that have decided to leave tithing in the old covenant and move into the new covenant, He gives them the same word for that concept: GIVING. I’ve seen this word used in at least two of the comments that have decided to stick with the purely biblical wisdom on this matter, and this is a confirmation. God bless you, and more grace.

Thank you, bros! Some pastors should be ashamed of themselves. They, knowing the truth, have decided to follow falsehood to justify the stealing going on in the house of God. And many gullible Christians readily chorus “Amen”. May God help us in Jesus’s name. Amen!

    • MINA

      April 17, 2018 at 11:00 am

Yes you can call it giving (Tithing is “GIVING” 10 percent), Giving to the church is recommended, as well as giving to the poor and needy. But this is NOT what freeze preaches, He is firmly against giving the church, and this isn’t just Nigerian churches because he has attacked other Pentecostal preachers. I agree a huge percentage of Nigerian Pastors are fake, but he should use wisdom in his teachings so as to not cause confusion or lead baby Christians astray.

Then another thing the government are abysmal in their performance. I believe the church should be integral in the showing light to the unprivileged. Where the government won’t build hospital the church should build, where the government won’t help education, churches would help. Where the banks won’t give loans the church would help but nooooooo. Private Jet and Bentley are very important. Only people who have God’s holy spirit will be angry.

      NO

the mission of the church is not to show the government the light. “go ye into the world” is a core mission.

government is useless, but can nigerians be able to focus on solutions as a nation.

we do not even know how to proceed as a nation.

but distraction is not what we need. Church is a small issue in all our problems in nigeria.

so church and tithe and contribution is not what we have to be debating if we want development.

entertainment is the worst distraction, now church attacks.

what of banks, what have they done to move nigeria forwards, telecoms, bet companies, etc. only church should show the example doing what is not their mission.

from this tithe debate IT SHOWS NIGERIA HAS A HUGE AND MASSIVE PROBLEM.

@ Oluwajohn : As its been projected up there -there good and there are bad ones –
Most of these churches even the smallest in number already and from way back – are heavily involved in charitable causes – just cause they don’t bring it to the media forth like politicians are noted to do; doesn’t mean they don’t do it.

Why not lets make a fierce demand on our income tax paid to the Govt, first?

Do you have an idea how much money and resources these Islamic clerics and sort seats upon but you’ll never hear or read an open call out to them, Allah forbids it -before you come for me – my Granddad is a Sheikh and I can tell you the amount of wealth that these faithful Muslims come to lay at his foot can’t be compared to what the richest G.O would dream to have.

Am sure the non-Christians will be laughing at we all – with the way we go on about this tithe issue.

Thank you so much for this very humble write up of your experiences and opinions about this issue.

I am not sure Daddy Freeze had attacked your Church and Pastor. But you have done this, showing an example of what Church members of those Churches daddy freeze attacks everyday should have done.

The man is doing so much damage and turning hearts away. He had also made Church seem like the biggest problem in Nigeria

Thanks for your action. Jesus reward you.

Daddy Freeze has so much very bitterness about the Church, calls all pastors fake and calls them names.

Let’s hope he does no attack you. There should be more articles from members explaining and expressing support of their faith and their own mission.

Thank you for this. Your work, seminar and ministry will prosper amen.

I’m over this tithe arguments back and forth. Read your bible, every Christian has the holy spirit to help you understand what your stand should be on tithing, simple! I agree with Omilola on the fact that your making heaven is not tied to your tithing or lack there of. personally I didn’t used to tithe until I was convicted by the holy spirit to do do, I have family members and friends that do not, respect the other persons opinion even if you believe otherwise. Personally I tithe out of love and consider it s privilege to be able to give back to God in furtherance of his kingdom apart from my time I devote to kingdom promotion. Finally on giving to Charities, yes we should but we should remember that someone needs to pay for evangelism programs on media for people to be saved and make heaven where we shall spend ETERNITY while we are saving the planet earth from global warming, strike a balance!
PS. sorry for the long comment

    • oluchi

      April 16, 2018 at 10:24 am

of everything she has written, your only point is that she is desperate for attention, so to you, nothing commendable, the gate of hell daddy freeze who is the most desperate for attention is not a problem for you.

but a humble expression of this person, which in all fairness is a great article, is desperate for attention to you.

Nothing daddy freeze brings attention to is important to development in nigeria, nothing zero.
so he’s just a tool for the government causing people to focus on the wrong things while corruption, killings and other things continue.

why can daddy freeze not speak against yahoo yahoo

      is that not a sin?

even some now with all kinds of rituals, but church, tithe is his concern.

Thank you to the writer of this article such an expression that no one had seen since.

Whilst your piece has been beautifully written, it does not give any scriptural backing for tithing. Tithing is not recommended or prescribed in the new testament. All givings or offerings should be done voluntarily without compulsion. God loves us regardless. His word as written in the Bible says whilst we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Daddy Freeze style of teaching is good as a lot of the teaching from so many Pastors in Nigeria have been erroneous with a calculated plan to lead astray. God is love, the bible reiterates and his word is just. If you believe in the vision of the ministry you belong to and you choose to give a proportion of your income weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis, it comes down to choice and choice alone.
Fear has become the watchword of many ministries regarding tithe and God’s word is the final authority. Its time for Nigeria to be thoroughly cleansed from false teachings and doctrines. I want my life to demonstrate love by my lifestyle of love. Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers that you do to me; the fatherless, widows, orphans and strangers in our world.

WHERE IS IT IN THE BIBLE! Smoking or drinking or pornography or yahoo yahoo.

Nigeria is probably under a spell and curse of distraction and lack of focus, that is why tithe, a voluntary contribution will become a national debate.

Tithe is personal, some people go to church and do not pay.

Some people return empty offering envelopes, some people give 10 naira.

It is your business and decision if you pay or not.

Someone sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet. Acts 4:37. it depends on you. Some left their work and followed Jesus.

You are convinced, pay, you are not, don’t pay, now saying someone should prove to you in the bible or in the new testament to pay, or not, you can keep asking.

it is not important for another human being to prove to you if you do not believe or to make you not pay,

why can you not find ways to convince us about how to move nigeria forward

      good luck to you

    April 16, 2018 at 10:31 am

Omilola…..a long piece there. But, you missed the whole point. The point is this, tithing is of the law which Christ came to set aside. So why are you going back to it. Don’t you know that all who have chosen to subject themselves to the law have no part in Christ? They have fallen from grace.

You pointed that the success of henry parson is tied to the fact he gave tithe. When actually he kept other business rules which makes business thrive. If you dont keep the rules of flying your plane will crash. If you don’t keep the rules of driving a car crash is inevitable.

In as much as Christians should give . it should be done freely and without you tying your blessings to the fact you gave this or that or because you did something good. This is the self righteousness belief system that leads to hell. Our righteous belief system should only be in Jesus and his finished works. For we have been created for good works and nothing is of ourselves. So as Christians when we give we have done nothing special .

Lastly, the law of tithing is a Jewish law ( Jew in flesh ) not a Nigerian or Christian law. How can you a gentile by birth ( Nigerian by birth) and a Christian ( a spiritual Jew) be subjected to the law that was not made for you in the first place .
Are American laws enforced in Nigeria? Or are Saudi Arabia’s laws enforced in Nigeria? Will you be arrested in Nigeria for not keeping American laws in Nigeria? Will you be arrested in Nigeria for not keeping Saudi Arabia’s laws in Nigeria? So please stop the foolishness. Tithing is not Christian. For it is not about Giving freely. Tithing is of the law….a Christian is all about giving freely

Reading these comments and all I can think of is 3 things:

    1. How irrecoverably brainwashed Nigerians are. Even the educated commenters. Only capable of seeing the world through one lens. There are other views of the world beyond Christianity. Christianity virtues are good, but some are harmful. Even Christ practiced as Jew. But after his death. wicked and selfish men took over his legacy and strong following to create a view of the world that benefits them and keeps people shackled.

    2. Nigerian church leaders consistently ask Christians o be ‘sheep’. To not question. To just accept. Jesus himself was completely counter to this. I would even go as far as saying Freeze is more Christ-like than Omilola. Why? Because he is seeking to liberate the minds of people. He is calling people to witness and experience God for themselves. Omilola in my mind represents the Pharisees, (sorry, Omi and Omi supporters, but this is my view), eager to maintain the status quo, quick to use flamboyant words to keep people in their sheep-like thinking.

    3. How unshakeable the church business is. I need to start a church. Looking for charismatic pastors. Candidates please apply within….

Not sure this comment will be posted. Whether or not it is, I hope it has challenged at least one person to expand their view of the world.

You are right about brainwashed. I was going through past BN articles , https://www.bellanaija.com/2013/08/a-pastor-his-congregant-writer-radio-personality-ese-walter-writes-about-her-alleged-affair-with-popular-nigerian-pastor/ to be specific and couldn’t believe the level of vitrol from Christians nonetheless. They appeared to lack the tools for reasoning or perhaps were in shock at the time!
      https://www.bellanaija.com/2016/09/husband-does-not-mean-the-male-partner-in-a-marriage-husband-means-master-pastor-chris-oyakhilome/

To be fair what Freeze is doing is not new, ALOT of Christians have been questioning certain antics in NIGERIAN church; I keep wondering why Nigerian churches are just so different.

      To the article

1.. I wish she could have added in real terms the profit the average (not her own) church receives by say a 200,000plus strong church membership all paying 10percent of their income .forever, no pension.no welfare for those now unable to give as they have no income
Then since the freeze movement took root, the losses the business have made and their strategy to gain such finances back. (Fear death mongering)

I guess people give tithes giving reasons that range from; love ;to the church not allowing them to carry out activities like weddings in their church to fear tactics, either fear of not making heaven, fear of sitting at the floor or bench in heaven when others are in high table / giving with the belief that they will receive in over abundance..eg give like ant receive like an elephant, no wahala to each their own..whatever allows one to sleep.

I understand where you, Omilola is coming from. wanted to criticize your write up but to be fair you wrote in love and answered all my worries.

I have been so disillusioned with organized religion, heck I even reduced my easter and christmas ‘visit’ what with my experiences: with some popular pastor saying women were created as an afterthought (chei naija sha!) with COD asking people to pay 240k for 24 hour blessings, to that same COD making me give and give till I left completely broke (i felt i was under a trance) up to another church where after the word of the day asked that for anyone to gain from the word we should sew seeds. So if I dont pay I wont gain from the word right? Or is it the church that its owner has the same name as your owner actually allowing a guest pastor to use fear tactics to force us to give. Giving examples of death by accident, our childrens death, illness, painful death? Abegi.

But the way you, Omilola, wrote makes me want to go back to regular church, plus you are right we should study for ourselves, if its too get the text in its original language and get possible definition and contexts to help us understand our religion deeply.. I am afraid I am kinda wise to be fooled now though

      April 16, 2018 at 3:45 pm

I agree that a lot of Christians get brainwashed because they refuse to read the Bible themselves, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. However, we are called to be sheep (John 10). If you’re not a sheep, you’re a goat, according to Jesus. Also, don’t forget Psalm 23, The problem is that some Christians have taken their pastors as their overall shepherd when that title belongs to Jesus

    April 16, 2018 at 12:41 pm

Thanks for supporting the truth biblically that wisdom is a person-Jesus Christ. Wonderful write-up from you. Though very educating and revelational, I still don’t accept the notion that Christians can tow different school of thoughts in what the believe is right to do and also that we can have varied revelation of the gospel. NOTE: THERE’S ONLY ONE GOSPEL, ONE GOD, ONE FAITH, ONE TRUTH, ONE DOCTRINE. Any other gospel other than the gospel of Christ is no other.
As for the issue of tithe which is no issue, we must understand that the primary essence of tithing wasn’t for the FUNDING OF THE GOSPEL but for the upkeep of the priests and Levites.
    What does Hebrew 7:11-14 say:
11 So if the priesthood of Levi, on which the law was based, could have achieved the perfection God intended, why did God need to establish a different priesthood, with a priest in the order of Melchizedek instead of the order of Levi and Aaron?

12 And if the priesthood is changed, the law must also be changed to permit it. 13 For the priest we are talking about belongs to a different tribe, whose members have never served at the altar as priests. 14 What I mean is, our Lord came from the tribe of Judah, and Moses never mentioned priests coming from that tribe.
Now the death and the change in priesthood ( now we’re in the priesthood of Christ Jesus) has abolished Levitical priesthood and tithing and in general the law forever. That word tithe isn’t in the church vocabulary again. Today we are the tithes in the hands of of our high priest,Christ, who is waving us before the father as blameless and holy.
Our pastors should humble themselves and go back to the drawing board to study properly what the finished works of Christ Jesus has provided. They are the reasons why they’re no manifestations in church today.
As for Daddy Freeze, may the holy spirit continue to use him for his purpose. Like you rightly pointed out, he should correct in love. Selah….

Thank you Omi. Those who criticize the fact that the Spirit has led you to tithe make me laugh. They talk as if they are Deputy-God. Hmmm. If they really had a relationship with God and they listened to God, they’ll know better than to question your hearing from the Spirit of God rather than going into God’s presence and finding out what He is saying.
I personally did not read all of Daddy Freeze’s hateful write up because it had too much venom, which tells me that he did not write of the Spirit. You on the other hand, have written out of love and the maturity that someone who spends time in God’s presence would do. I tithe because I love God, and until Jesus comes, I will do so, because I know that the same way he wants me to live a live pleasing to Him is the same way he wants me to tithe, to show that I can give him a little portion of ALL He has given to me. And I will continue, regardless of the venom spilled out by people about tithing. I live outside Nigeria and people in my church here tithe, so why has the devil made Nigeria a place where he can use the demon of religion to cheat people out of their destinies and place in God’s kingdom?
I want to make heaven, and by God’s grace I will. I will not let anything like giving my tithe (which is clearly spelt out by Jesus in the new testament, Matthew 23:23 if you care to study your bible) rob me of HEAVEN!
Freeze, with his hate messages will likely lead some people to hell, sadly. But if anyone goes to hell, they did on their own, Because they heard the word of God but rather than ask for God to lead them, chose more conveniently, to believe a lie.

I will tithe because I have an understanding from God. Pastor did not cajole me o. God spoke to me! And I will take up my cross, pay the sacrifice, and follow HIM!

So now it’s all about ‘personal conviction’? Wow! After policing God’s people for decades that if they don’t tithe they are cursed, personal conviction is the ‘new’ argument. First, we were brought up as children that the reason we tithe was because Pastors are the new Levites. After providing evidence that no they are not and Jesus is our new High Priest and the Levites are a tribe in old Israel, they used the ‘Melchizedek’ principle. Now how that translates to Christians must tithe despite stating in Hebrews 7, Hebrews 8:6-13, how Jesus Christ has taken over the Priesthood. Pastors cannot quote Luke 11:42, Malachi 3:10 which are scriptures enforcing the law, and then in the same breathe claim you are under a Melchizedek principle. Additionally, the Jews were commanded to tithe because they were under the law. Are Christians under the law?

    Concerning Matthew 5:17.
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

To fulfill is to bring to COMPLETION! It was not until Jesus died that the law was made obsolete. On the cross Jesus said “it is finished”. John 19:30

    Gal 3:19
Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions UNTIL the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator.

When the Law & Melchizedek principle argument didn’t work, they started raining curses on their congregation who don’t tithe and any opposition to their scheme. Forgetting Gal 3:10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”

Since curses did not work, I can see we are going into the love and personal conviction phase despite it be a compulsory doctrine in Nigerian churches. There is something called tough love which means the promotion of a person’s welfare, especially that of an addict, child, or CRIMINAL, by enforcing certain constraints on them, or requiring them to take responsibility for their actions.

My sister with tough love, there is no premise for tithing in the new covenant. Humble yourself like I did a long time ago and admit it. I know it’s hard to admit we were all wrong. Know the difference between giving and tithing. There is no debate that the Christian is obligated to give. It is a MORAL duty as Christians to give. But the Christian is not obligated to tithe. It is not a moral duty to tithe. God’s church is very secure, his people are secure make no mistake about that, but God’s judgement is coming for Nigerian Pentecostalism. I wrote this post in 2013 http://engozed.blogspot.com/2013/11/deliver-us-frompentecostalism.html. So don’t think this is about Freeze. This is bigger than Freeze. And may God continue to protect him from his detractors.

Madam Omilola mostly wrote about love which is the epitome of the Christian life as rightly exemplified by life of Jesus Christ. The Bible says God is love and whoever does not love does not know God. I expected her to expose the scriptures and reveal the dark sides of the the subject(in this case TITHE) as daddy did but instead she delved so much telling about her experience. This omilola girl just needs to take several seats. So you knew about all the negativity going on in Christianity but u chose to shut up, waiting for a bold man to stand up against it and then write him a lengthy message filled with sentiments and far away from the truth that Christ wants to be propagated. The problem with u is that u think u r learned but your small wisdom is big foolishness in the eyes of God. Tithing doesn’t guarantee a spiritual relationship with God. Same as the Passover. Christ died for us and has fulfilled all laws as the first fruit from the grace. Madam omi u don’t read ur bible enough that’s why you don’t know the sin, curse and unprofitable essence of tithing. Go and write your lengthy message to your GO ok. Ask them to show us audits of what the tithe money is used for. Or better still, face your work and allow who God chose to reveal his truth to Nigeria do his work. To the rest of you who have seen the light and are no longer blind, be bold, stand strong, evangelise and never loose your faith. Christ loves us all and his truth will be spread. Let no Omi or any agent of hell disrupt the work of God. God bless you all.

Thank you for this write up. Well written. God bless you. Just to address the old testament issue I believe giving is a scriptural practice that is not dispensationally bias! If the problem is with the words “tithe” or tithing”, leave it alone. Concluding it as a practice that Is only restricted to the law era is pointless! Abuse is old as the fall. Those who will be stingy would be stingy whether is law or grace. Agreed, the curse of the law has been lifted because of Christ! 2 Corinthians 9:7 teaches us to give as we purpose! To purpose involves coming to a percentage no matter how you interpret it. To purpose means to intend and plan accordingly, It is a deliberate intentional and planned approach to giving. The tithe is simply an honour Principle! The key issue with the principle is motivation and honor. Tithing is a reflection of our honor to God and to further the course of the preaching of the Gospel of Christ!

Sister Omilola, I enjoyed reading your letter to Mr. Daddy Freeze. Personally, I’m not down with the way Mr. Freeze goes about correcting our fraudulent pastors but he’s making his points. Read very carefully 2 Corinthians 9:7:

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

That’s is genuine giving. Extortion in form of tithes and tithing, first fruits are all laws given to the Jews. When Jesus came, grace and truth came with Him. There’s no way you’re going to mix laws with grace. If you’re going to obey one of the laws you’re going to obey all. And if you disobey one of those laws you’ve disobeyed all of them.

Advise pastors to preach giving as led by the Spirit of God and not giving as led by tithe. Any type of giving not coming from the heart of the giver is coercion and God doesn’t such giving. It doesn’t matter how you give but the attitude of giving matters to God.

Exactly why the bible said “My people perish for lack of knowledge”. Christians should take time out to read the bible and decide if they want to pay tithes or not. I will not say Pastors are extorting christians, it’s more of the believer not being aware of what the bible says and doing as he is told not as he has read and understood.

I have never paid tithe in church, I do give my offerings but that is that. And this issue does not bother me because I feel we are all created differently and cannot behave in one accord. On the other hand I do give my money and assets freely. Most time I go out of my way and comfort zone to offer a helping hand. What should move us as Christians is compassion, this is what can pursue our conscience into the right directions. Whether it is tithe, helping strangers or siblings. I think we should learn to give WITHOUT considering earthly rewards…

It’s a pity that we still think that this is the main problem in our lives.
Everyone is scared of not making heaven.
Honestly one will hardly make heaven if he doesn’t make it on earth.
We should be more bothered about the quality of our lives here than the quality of our next life.

Great Men die for a cause they believe in. Great men like Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln. And the Greatest of all, our lord and saviour Jesus Christ. These great men were so bothered about the quality of our lives that they laid down their lives for us to have a better life.
Tithing was the least thing these great men were bothered about and rarely spoke about it.
Nigerians are hungry, depressed, confused, poor, burdened with a mountain of care because of the state of the country.
    Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30;
11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Just like the old times, when people from all parts of Israel and beyond ran to Jesus Christ for help, people run to the church today for help because its the body of Christ only for their loads to be doubled and their fears increased.

Therefore if the yoke is not easy and the burden light then it is not of Christ.

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Gal5:1

What we should be bothered about is to be Knowledgeable.
For God said; My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. MY PEOPLE not even the heathen.
We lack knowledge in all aspects in this country.
Millions of religious institutions yet we lack knowledge especially scriptural knowledge which we think we have in abundance.

Its hightime time we understand the world around us and put hands together to make it better and stop being religious fanatics.
It’s only in countries likes this that tithing is the issue in churches.

The preacher said in Ecclesiastics 11:

13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

    ***Continuation of previous comment
And the commandment is to LOVE. Romans13:8-10
8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,”[a] and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

I believe I have said enough.
Peace and love of Christ to all.

The decision to pay or not pay tithe is a personal one. I must applaud Omilola for constructively giving a feedback devoid of verbal abuses and use of derogatory words. Daddy Freeze is bold and i must also commend his fight against the exploit of christians, however his approach is repulsive that i do not listen to him. If only he could ask the holy spirit for wisdom on how to communicate his message and do it from the position of love and not victimization. People get blessed regardless of paying tithes or not and i will not fault anyone for making a decision to pay.
Bible says we should do all with Love.. I rest my case

Well done Omi for speaking out as per your convictions.

Like many have said, Freeze (though going about it in a very wrong way) has exposed what some pastors have reduced Christianity to. However, if a house is divided amongst itself, it cannot stand.

The only negative I have with your open letter is unnecessarily highlighting the faults of some churches and singing praises about yours. ONLY GOD SEES THE HEART OF MAN. I just thought that was an unnecessary part of your post.

As a Catholic, I am aware of many of the negatives that have rocked the church (but remember the church is made of of people NOT stone) and I speak out but that does not take away from the MANY positives: The mission, the charity, the community, the UNITY. I also believe in having a PERSONAL relationship with God. That is how we grow and become intimate with him. However, none of us can sit at home and not come as a community to experience the fullness of God (whether it is in a catholic church or gla or wherever).

FINALLY, rember that WE ALL ARE the members of the church of God! One love x

It is finished as Jesus Christ said! No amount of spices anyone can use to paint it, it has finished long time ago. I recently watched one of the so-called respected men of God, in his pastors’ conference, he was telling his pastors that anyone who refuses to pay tithe will not go to heaven, as if tithing is the only prerequisite for heaven. All churches are private business opportunities created to impoverish the people. I wrote on religion (Christianity) caused our political and economic stagnation on my Facebook (Durojaiye Oluwaseun John). I have observed as a practical christian that Christianity produces more atheists than any other religions, this is because they are more divided, inconsistent messages, doctrinal differences, etc.

    • Engoz

      April 17, 2018 at 11:41 am

Absolutely on the atheism aspect. I wrote this article years ago http://engozed.blogspot.com/2013/11/deliver-us-frompentecostalism.html about the deliverance we need from Nigerian Pentecostalism. I linked it to Catholic shenanigans before the reformation movement by Martin Luther.

‘As Catholic indulgences in the 16th century became unbearable thereby heralding the Reformation movement, soon Pentecostalism would lose its savour and this time around it might not even be a reform of Christianity but an outright deviation and distaste for God and religion.’

Atheism is very trendy in Nigeria at the moment. Who can blame them?

The writer of this article on BN talks about how we should not use intellect to read the Bible. This is one of the many demonic doctrines they use to keep people in bondage. The gift of the Spirit include wisdom, knowledge . These are traits that encompasses sound intellect. My intellect is a gift from the spirit. According to 1 Cor 12:4

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

So Speaking in tongues does not guarantee one has the gift of knowledge. Paul says we should seek to have all. If you are struggling with lack of intellect, don’t tell those who God has gifted with such to sacrifice their intellect for the clearly foolish things Nigerian Pastors have turned church to.

I don’t get how we become too wise in our own eyes when it comes to giving to God but very much willing to spend on even frivolous things. Tithing is not by force! If don’t want to pay, don’t brainwash others to join your ministry! Don’t lead others astray!!!

Hello Madam, thanks for your write-up. They however remain your views and yours alone. Titthing is different from Giving. You mixed up both. There is a great difference.
Also, I’m sorry to say, but a cornerstone of Discipleship courses which you mentioned that you attend is “Brokenness”. From your write-up, it is very clear that you are not Broken. If you were, you wouldn’t have to list the causes you support, the people and places you help, or the charities you give to. It was absolutely unnecessary and it shows Pride. As the Bible says (forgive my paraphrase), never allow your right hand know what your left hand is doing. As such, it was totally unnecessary to blow your trumpet.
That said, kindly show me where Jesus Christ or His disciples ever titthed, preached tithing or obligated tithing. If there is none, then I rest my case.
Again and finally, please endeavour to find out the difference between Tithing and Giving. Thank you.

NB: You didn’t have to write an Open Letter to Daddy Freeze. No one needs to know if you got across to him or not. That, again, is Pride. That again, smacks of not being “Broken”.

    God bless us all.

Beautifully said! While we are just conscious of paying the 10% tithe as Christians we must be sensitive to the needs of those around us as found in Deuteronomy 14:17,29 and 15:1-18. In it I could see God calling us to be more proactive in our giving not just to the church lest we become blind of the orphans or the weak and needy within our purview nor to just the latter or the church of Christ suffers in her mission and duties to propagate the gospel due to funding.

Personally, I have found giving rewarding because it is only by giving that we receive but would this be true for a grudging giving? Of course not! God loves a cheerful giver so said St Paul.

When we give with love we show ourselves worthy of being God’s custodians of more of what we have lovingly given and through us God can have the hands and the legs He desires to bless humanity with.

When we give to God it must not be however limited to money because in reality it extends to everything God has blessed us with – even our time and talent.

Once again thanks Omilola for the post

It is quite unfortunate that some Christian donot come close enough to the father to really know why He sent His son. We keep fighting for what is not our business to fight for by so doing leaving what our primary assignment that is to preach the gospel instead we undertake the task of fighting for the poor even though we have them as relation, brother, sister, how many of them has we helped. That is those that are close to us o. You can feed a man, feed his children and feed his wife for all their lives and you wouldnot have truly helped him if at the end of the day he does not have Christ. I think almost everyone in America should be born again today if provision of basic amenities or/helpIng the poor works wonders. Preach Jesus and He will help them. Remember there was hardship also in the days of Jesus, their were also poor people but Jesus would not be distracted from his primary assignment john6:27..spreading /propegating the gospel costs MONEY. Give a man good life without salvation and that will be double tragedy. Just do your bit.let us stop being activists for the poor like Judas let us be true activist for Jesus and it will be slot easier for us to truly be helpers of the poor. Jesus didn’t come to enrich the world but to safe the world john6:13-15

At the end of the day, tithing or giving to the needy does not qualify you for nothing.
You can tithe all you want and still remain a church rat if you do not make efforts to find your way in this life and you can give to the needy and the aforementioned will still be your fate.

if you must tithe or give for whatever reason make sure you do it freely not because you are being bullied or threatened into it or because you expect to be thanked and worshiped in return or most commonly because you expect that your giving automatically means that you will receive double for your trouble.

your compassion should lead you, It really shouldn’t be this complicated

The Church is the body of Christ. It is both a heavenly body and an an earthly body. Because Jesus left the heavenly Church and came to earth to build the earthly Church. He is coming back again to join both the dead (in Him) and the living (in Him) ALL to return finally to heaven. This is the summary of the Rapture
The Church on earth is a building where Christians worship God through His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. It can also be run as an organization, having CEO (call him G.O. if you like), board of Directors, Managers…….. down to labourers or casuals. Hence we find Pastors, Deacons, Ushers…..
But let me be blunt!!! If you are NOT called…. forget it. ALL YOU ARE DOING WILL COME TO ZERO SOMEDAY.
If you are called, then please lead souls to Christ. Make heaven bound citizens. Do not run a one-man-gang. Don’t turn yourself to the Bible members will read. The days of “only Pope interprets the scriptures” are over.

    On the issue of Tithes and Tithing…….. why is it generating so much heat???? Two simple reasons namely;
    1) Tithes are the life line of most Churches, especially the modern day Pentecostals. No tithe and the Church will shut down. It will fold up, delete, end or…..let me be fair and use a polite word. It will fold up.
    2) Tithes have made a lot of thieves and dubious personnel in the body of Christ. Especially those that fall into the temptation of MONEY.

But anything happening under the sun that is new? NO. Didn’t Jesus chase out money mongers from the Temple? Mind you some of them were doing legitimate trading. But IN THE CHURCH. The house of prayers turn into a den of thieves.
If the issue of Tithes were a debate, both sides will argue reasonably. There are Bible scriptures to support whatever your view. And Scriptures have been quoted by everyone. My own take on this…?????
PLEASE GIVE DIRECTLY (OR THROUGH A BIBLE BELIEVING CHURCH) TO SUPPORT THE NEEDY AND THE WORK OF GOD ON EARTH. CALL IT TITHE, OFFERING, GIFT OR NO NAME.
There is joy in giving and blessings are attached. Tithe is NOT the license to go to heaven. But giving can save a dying soul.
    GOD BLESS YOU.

I stated this before in another post, but have to use it as an opening here: Let everyone do what they feel is right before God. I didn’t do it for years despite having a personal relationship with God. I just couldn’t fathom giving up that amount of money each month. Me wey salary nor reach sef. However, when I got the conviction, I started tithing and soon discovered the beneficial essence of doing so – spiritually and materially. Might I also add, that the salary that I didn’t think was even enough became more than enough. Tithing is a difficult concept to uphold and I bet God knows this, hence tithing is strictly between an individual and God.

Next, I will respond to some particular posts:
At the person who said we tithe for selfish reasons and for financial gain. First you can’t blame them because of the blessings highlighted in Malachi 3:10, God said it and people believe it. Therefore, at least give them an “F” for Faith and believing in His word. Second, even so, God sees our hearts and intentions and He only can judge us based on that. Leave matter for Mattias.

@Niyi – O ti kpa mi oh! Did you say tithing is restricted to Jews because it originated from Jewish Law? Ha-ba! First of all the Law, which is the word of God aka the Bible, applies to every born again Christian who has accepted Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior, and has a personal relationship with God. The minute we surrender our lives to God, we have become joint heirs with Christ, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar person. You are therefore immediately subject to the Law. No options here. So whether we are from Karangida, Japan, Greece, Israel, Idaho, Sokoto, Imota, wherever, we are subject to the Law, period. God will not now be cherry picking those who are subject to His word and those who are “exempt” from His word. Frankly, your statement almost nullifies the essence of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection. A ma wa ri ogo oh!

@Jokobaba – Again, please ooooh! There is nothing paganistic about Abraham and Jacob tithing. Do you realize that at times, when we want to “sa” (praise) God, we refer to Him as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? So please which small gods did they worship oh?! None. They were God-acclaimed sons of God. The Bible is very clear about that. At any point in time, when they gave a tenth, they gave it strictly to GOD, not any idols.

@Engoz – For me yes, (I can’t speak for anyone else), it was a STRONG PERSONAL CONVICTION.

Nobody wants to make a sacrifice for Jesus anymore. We want to give but we don’t want to tithe. Hmm. People are dying everyday and judgement is happening after death. If not tithing will make me not make heaven, I cut it off and give it away. By the way, what is 10% compared to the 100% that God gives me? We want to polish Christianity to suit our selfishness. All of you who are saying tithing is not compulsory, or is in the old testament, or is not a commandment from Jesus, kontinu. Dia ris God.

The fact is that tithe is requirement of the law, like animal sacrifice and circumcision. if christian must consider paying tithe. he/she show also consider animal sacrifice and circumcision. also note that Abraham gave tithe he did not pay tithe. in the law you pay because you owe but in grace you give out of a willing and cheerful heart . if you must obey tithing make sure you keep the whole law.
