Nigerian womenswear designers have made incredible strides over the last decade. Having built strong brands and gained commercial success, it seems as though things just keep getting better.
Menswear has not enjoyed the same attention and growth. However, there seems to be a rising crop of Menswear designers that might give the segment the jolt that it needs.
One of the forerunners is Exclamations Couture led by designer Babajide “Babs” Familusi aka FAB. Born on January 25th, 1978 and raised in Lagos, He is believed to be a reincarnation of his grandfather who was a tailor and passed away a few weeks before he was born!
A graduate of Kings College and University of Lagos, FAB established Exclamations Couture in 2001. Mostly self-taught, the young designer used his background in the Sciences to do research in Fabric, Fit and Finishing to create winning pieces. The first shirt that was ever produced was mistaken for a Jermyn Street product! With the applause and exclamations that came from clients, friends and family, the brand was born! Exclamations Couture has since focused on setting the standards for the tailoring of Shirts and Suits in Africa.

The designer unveiled a new collection in London; The collection was inspired by the simplicity and sharpness of Black & White, hence the name ‘Zebra’. Fabrics including wool, cashmere and other unique fabric blends were sharply tailored to create an outstanding collection that personifies in ‘the London meets Lagos Bloke’.

Been following FAB for a few years since his Unilag days and he’s definitely been improving his skill by the day…………….this zebra collection shows quite a bit of creativity. Waiting for homeboy to explode cos it’s been a long time coming. Keep doing what you do, this is just the beginning.

I do know it is not easy to design men’s wear, so a little variety in the designs like this is great to see. Although I don’t know if it is just me but the jacket seem a bit weird around the shoulders and the jacket the designer has got on seem so big on him, it just makes him look shorter than he probably his

This is great! When a Nigerian does a Fashion show abroad, it is a big deal. For the person and for the country.

I must say that there’s so much you can expect from Mens Couture Amaka. As much as the whole world yearns for fresh designs on the runway, Men still prefer wearable couture. Over the years I have noticed a lot of designs being exhibited on the runway but when I dig deep I find that they only altered a design that dates back to the 1950s etc…Take a look at this young mans work again…His approachis obviously simplistic and conservative with a slight edge but then notice the details in the tailoring, how many from home can lay claim to tailoring menswear as well..Would you rather a lot more of “unwearable stuff” with little or zero attention to the details? Thank you Bella for seeking out this talent. How can one reach him?
