Nigerian Accent ranked as the 5th Sexiest in the World! – CNNGo

By BellaNaija.com

According to CNN International’s Global Insights, Local Experiences website, CNNGo “because a foreign language can be the best aphrodisiac, we traveled the world in search of the 12 hottest accents”.

The Italian accent scored the top spot as the sexiest accent while French, Spanish, Czech and Irish accents also grabbed a spot on the list.

Our uber-sexy Nigerian accent was ranked as the 5th sexiest accent in the world.
We definitely should have hit the top spot!

The article was tongue-in-cheek so we will let the “Some Nigerians are actually worth giving your bank account information to” and “Kinda makes the occasional phone scam worth the swindle” comments slide.

What do you think?

    • THE AMAKA August 18, 2011 at 3:47 PM

not funny, and yes, we should start jumping because of what the oyinbo man is telling us. -_- My God, why is this even here? after that snide comment about 419, i still wonder why anyone would be happy about this.

      • nnamdinho August 18, 2011 at 5:07 PM

we actually do alot of 419..dat’s wat dey know us for..who’s fault..chill out

        • ojaybaby August 19, 2011 at 4:21 AM

actually only 7.8% of fraud comes from Nigeria #just saying http://iamnigerian.posterous.com/fraud-and-scam-are-not-nigerian-the-egregious

        • Anon August 19, 2011 at 10:42 AM

Only 7.8%? Only? When would it be a cause for alarm? When it is 50%? Na wa o…

        • THE AMAKA August 20, 2011 at 3:40 PM

at anon, guess what, the US leads with roughtly 60% and the Uk follows. Nigeria is in the top 5, but our percentage is very small compared to the GIANTS of the scamming game, YET we are always labelled the scammers. its soooo annoying. its just hypocrisy and racism at its best.

      • Nancy August 18, 2011 at 5:33 PM

“THE AMAKA” I believe our ability to laugh at ourselves and see silver linings in every cloud is what makes us unique. It will keep making us tick and keep making them wonder at what makes us tick.
        Relax, oh nne.

      • partyrider August 18, 2011 at 5:37 PM

life isnt that serious na…rather than happy i think people just find it hilarious..as simple as that.Chill my sister!

      • ----- August 18, 2011 at 6:02 PM

@ THE AMAKA..Girl life is too short oh. I know you can be very funny and witty, but lately that ur pleasant attitude has being taking a piss. Babe don’t give way to negativity oh. I know everyone subscribes to the occasional internet rage thang but don’t be the poster girl 4 it sweetie(life is 2 short).
9ja is wat it is oh..I’m embarrassed 2 say that even I in all ma 9janess hv been scammed. So yeah y’all don’t take the whole scamming thing personally. SO what if some low life lagos boy refuses to make an honest living and instead decided to scam others? I’m not happy about it but people can make jokes about it they want like how I make fun of North America co of their obese peeps..It’s all fun and games I tell you. I won’t drink panadol 4 somebody’s head ache. If u get upset abt every joke someone cracks at 9ja’s expense u’ll def get an ulcer. Btw did anyone what that episode of the Big Bang Theory where Raj was contemplating sending money to a Nigerian prince..That was funny.

        • bluebirdie August 21, 2011 at 11:27 AM

woah serious!! which season and episode?!!!

        • Ijeoma August 22, 2011 at 5:56 AM

I saw the episode. It was pretty funny. I believe 30 Rock also had an episode where they were yarning about this “Nigerian Prince” and if i am correct The Office (US) also had that something about Nigerian scam too. I just laugh, can’t be bothered.

      • THE AMAKA August 18, 2011 at 7:17 PM

    • Gemma August 18, 2011 at 4:33 PM

We’re so used to being The World’s Most Corrupt Country and being on the US Terror Watch List that we now take ourselves way too seriously. I’m sure the citizens of the other countries on the list are just having a good laugh. No one sweats these things. But we wouldn’t be Nigerians if we didn’t moan and mumble about this, would we? Lighten up, people. It’s just a fun list.

    • Truth Teller August 18, 2011 at 4:59 PM

My comment “it’s not a bad thing” was meant for the accent part only, not for this video that cheapens Nigerian girls! (even though it does happen to some gullible ones)

    • Kemchi August 18, 2011 at 5:33 PM

No be greed and mumu dey worry person wey carry bank acct number give a total stranger? Who gives away vital info like that? And they say we’re not intelligent! KMT

On a lighter note at least our accent is sexier than d Irish :) I for die if their own sexy pass.

Some people are too serious sha.. Chill out y’all, it is not that serious! It’s just a fun list, and hey… we made top 5. No one’s asking you to throw a party. Just laugh and stop using fake British, american, or whatever accent. Stick to your naija accent because it’s sexy… *winks*.

      • Nancy August 18, 2011 at 6:07 PM

Err, what’s Nigerian accent? Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo? I’m not going tribal o! I’m honestly wondering

      • Titi August 18, 2011 at 6:55 PM

I imagine the mean accents when speaking English, hence Italians are ranked top etc

        • hers August 19, 2011 at 8:32 AM

Yeah! But the Yoruba accent speaking English is different from the Pidgin accent version. You get?

    • Fan August 18, 2011 at 7:09 PM

that video is razz. I guess its part of a movie or something; Nigerian accent get levels o. Concentrated Igbo, yoruba and other accents no follow o

    • Tiki August 18, 2011 at 7:45 PM

LOL, I thought it was only me who found Nigerians sexy! You see guys, it’s an international thing! Now y’all chill out about the problems in your country for a minute at least, sit back and relax…whether na oyinbo talk am or not, Naija people no dey carry last! THere now, minute is over, people (like THE AMAKA, girl what’s happening? u used to be such fun!) can go back to counting and recounting what’s wrong in the country.

    • Inspector August 18, 2011 at 7:47 PM

THIS NEWS IS A FAKE FAAAAAAAAAAAKEEE ONE THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THAT ON CNN GO WEBSITE IT IS A VERY FAT LIE

    • bims August 18, 2011 at 8:04 PM

@ex-boy i think its hausa (sigh…to be fair) followed by of course my very own yoruba. But apart from that, it gets annoying fast whne we fake american accents bcos it sounds off and everyone can tell. I only try and impress my self and the land i came from…always knew we had a gbaski accent even before i cam e here and even before pple complimented it and even b4 this article so…yes! its SEXAI…..9ja pls stop forming another mans accent

    • gully August 18, 2011 at 8:14 PM

nigerian accent is sexy but that bank info spam comment is dumb. messed everything. No need for anyone to go tribal when I hear a ghanaian accent i dont wonder if its ga, twi or ewe just sound Ghanaian to me, same with South African i kno their accent and i dont think about it being zulu or xhosa is sexier wtf lol. “Nigerians are recognized for bad n good think n hell ill take both!”

      • Dearie August 19, 2011 at 12:23 PM

Exactly my point gully, you seem to be one of the real intelligent ones on this site! This topic obviously has exposed how truly shallow some peeps truly are!I guess fashion is not science after all…* metarmophotically speaking * anyhow, All Nigerians have a distinct Nigerian accent…and should be elated it’s rated higher than 6.Irish (Colin Farrell), 7.oxford British(sienna miller), 8.U.S southern(briny spears), 9.brazillian Portuguese ,10(Trinidadian(Nicky minaj). 11 Thai accent and 12argentine(Fernando lamas)…. There is no other African name even on this list! I’m ashamed for some of the comments here! Bella post my comment oh,I’m entitled to it.

        • Ijeoma August 22, 2011 at 6:19 AM

What on earth are you going on about? Something as freaking simple as an accent and how people find it sexy and you go on trying to sound so “intelligent” please spare me! Relax! I found it interesting and fun because i have been told often that i sound sexy and pardon me for feeling the compliment. Actually, scratch that…call me shallow. Enough of this pseudo intelligent jargon. I am reading what you wrote and it makes absolutely no sense. Such negativity! Chill, relax and if you want to be so scientific, go do some research on how sounds arouses us. Shessssh! I have a THICK Nigerian accent. Born and raised in Lagos! If people find it sexy, it is a compliment. Life is not that serious.

    • naa August 18, 2011 at 8:15 PM

@ obecks no need to be rude oo.. if some ppl say ur accent is sexy and u believe it and it makes u happy.. Rejoice.. Really no need 4 name-calling. Comm on..

    • Hali August 18, 2011 at 8:24 PM

    • Ada August 18, 2011 at 11:01 PM

Meanwhile aint no way they be using Yoruba accent with their H syndrome to come to this conclusion…. smh

      • aah August 19, 2011 at 3:32 AM

if you look at the website page displayed the the famous tongues listed are yoruba people no need for your ignorance here.

    • afronubia August 19, 2011 at 12:20 AM

Hogwash! Naija typical accent is just there. Nothing sexy about. Anyway sexiness is relative. Nigerians talk too loud myself inclusive. I totally disagree abeg. Sexy ko sexy ni.

    • Ihatenonsense August 19, 2011 at 2:59 AM

the dumbest topic ever by CNN.
To americans every – body has an accent but them
They think they dont have accents but every other person from outside USA has an accent. Americans are so dumb 90% dont even know where the english language came from.

Nigerian Accent is sexy my -
How does one (even a PHd and most learned) pronounce the word
      DOCTOR as DOK TOR
      PURSUE as POORRSHOOOO
      WORK as WOK

So you call the above pronounciations sexy

I think CNN is actually making fun of naijas. I mean really, are they for real LWKMD LOL LOL

      • nola August 26, 2011 at 12:54 PM

        its pronunciation by the way……………

    • Rosellar August 19, 2011 at 3:56 AM

I think it’s †ђξ ‘acquired accents’ really, Nigerians have a lot of those in †ђξ media. During my last visit, I was quite shocked to discover that most radio and TV shows are manned by ‘abroad returnees’. I mean, for a typical naija accent, listen to Karen Igho, Nkem Owoh….

      • THE AMAKA August 19, 2011 at 8:34 AM

I agree, like Vina from Big Brother. but Karen is not a typical naija accent, well not in my opinion just from being in Nigeria. there may be folks that talk like her, but that does not make it a typical naija accent. it also depends on where you grew up and what your native tongue is

    • Ms Ivoire August 19, 2011 at 4:46 AM

I thought the accent thing was funny but some people who take themselves too seriously will prolly not see it that way…it’s meant to be tongue-in-the-cheek sort of thing so no need to get all wound up for nothing. Just laugh or shrug and keep moving!

    • NNENNE August 19, 2011 at 4:51 AM

      Dear BN bloggers,
My request is simple. Please give the AMAKA a break!!!!! Like everyone else , she is entitled to her opinion. I did not find the video funny too.I saw it on the internet prior to this time.
This too is my opinion. Now , go ahead and critic me… its ok!!

    • mimilavander August 19, 2011 at 9:42 AM

NNENNE i don’t tink anybody has time 4 u..THE AMAKA loosen up a bit………….its fun to laugh at our mistakes,,naija is not ”THERE” yet.if they say our accent is sexy then it is abi na una do d research..I LOVE NAIJA razzness or not n by d way whr did dat word spring up from.

    • Bolanle August 19, 2011 at 10:11 AM

This video is soooooo razz! is he even speaking English? kmt nonsense, but this is what makes Nollywood movies for me, i can just laugh at a lot of the stupidity!

Anyways Nigeria is stepping up, so being ranked number 5 take it as a pinch of salt and let us keep striving for more!

    • Ruthina August 19, 2011 at 10:58 AM

      Hot…

    • Ruthina August 19, 2011 at 11:04 AM

      That clip was sooooo…. RAZZ!
      Naija.

    • majjic August 19, 2011 at 11:50 AM

the cnn poost didnt have to say “some Nigerians are worth givin ur bank info” like e-crime is all we do
      funny how no noticed that

    • Demmy August 19, 2011 at 12:01 PM

I don’t think they r making fun of Naija but it’s kind of silly to rate people’s accents. Who cares if a country’s accent is sexy or not. It’s just joblessness :)

    • Dearie August 19, 2011 at 12:03 PM

I’m pissed!why are we Nigerians our own enemies? Our accent not intonations have just been rated the 5th sexiest in the world! That has other top countries including u.s.a, britain,Ireland, french accents e.t.c and jested of us seeing the larger picture and be proud of this, the over educated and informed some are reducing this to a tribal issue?I’m disgusted! Are you telling me that even on oxford street when a Nigerian walks by talking on the phone, somehow, you don’t turn to look because you identify that accent as familiar?is this a bad thing?what is this video for Bella?I would have loved to see you project this in a classier fomat!
Nigerians need to appreciate what we have and realize that the world loves it and own it! Welldone CNN yes we are unique, thanks.I’m out.

      • Phoebe August 20, 2011 at 9:02 PM

Right on point dearie. The average Nigerian is so stereotyped into accepting only insults that they deem compliments as un-befitting for Nigeria. I tire

      • Ijeoma August 22, 2011 at 6:24 AM

        HEAR! HEAR!

Btw, i misunderstood your other response. My bad.

    • Fly girl August 19, 2011 at 12:31 PM

Yah! Naija accent rated 5th sexiest in the world! Nice and oh nice they used the Real Sexy one …Omotola as it’s famous tongue…yeah always loved that she spoke clear normal not faking American or british accents! Yep, can all the wannabe peeps revert to our clean naija English now? Hey…it’s sexayyyyyy……

    • Foxtrot August 19, 2011 at 12:34 PM

Ah! But of course – The Nigerian accent is super funny. I can compeletely imagine people being mesmerised by our accent. Its a combination of our accent and our choice of words or manner of expression.

    • Ifeoma August 19, 2011 at 1:00 PM

I recognise mc morris ndubueze. would that be esut or imt? hilarious ‘o di senior on.’

    • car leasing August 19, 2011 at 3:19 PM

Is it the pidgin English accent or what? Anyway, won se o! :)

    • kay August 19, 2011 at 3:32 PM

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE NIGERIAN ACCENT.STOP FOOLING URSELVES

    • bims August 19, 2011 at 4:54 PM

@ihatenonsense i’m sorry to say but its people like you who never appreciate what they have and make nigerians have that inferiority complex we are so known for. Are you kidding me? So when the french says “shocolat” its french so automatically its good and sexy but when the yorubas say “shocolate” its razz. ABEGI pls start having some self confidence in ur culture and stop taking everything as an attack against ur nigerianess. CNN o on soun for this one.
Yes and i think its sexy when some africans say WOK instead of WORK :) no be all of us eurocentricism don kill

      • THE AMAKA August 19, 2011 at 5:05 PM

AMEN! when other Africans make fun of our accent for not being britsh or american enough (as if the americans themselves are the originators of the english language) i serioulsy shake my head. some people suffer from colonial mentality so bad they dont even notice it. its a shame. i love any accent from naija, its called an ACCENT for a reason. sometimes they will see someone with a thick accent and say the person doesnt speak good English, shaking my head.

    • bims August 19, 2011 at 5:33 PM

      @Ihatenonsense

ok lets try this again, ur comment shows our bright streak of inferiority complex we have always haboure after urocentric ideas have been pushed down our throat. So are u telling me that when the french pronounce chocolate [english] as “shocolat” its sexy but when Yorubas pronounce it “shocolate” its razz. Always putting ourselves down.
Omo mehn no body go accept u until u accept urself and advance urself. The japanese are where they are today bcos they stay true to themselves.
….and yes we all sound alike when we travel abroad and try to the the american accent thingy yeah so…..

*bella naija abeg pls post my comment*

      • bims August 20, 2011 at 1:18 AM

oopsies didnt know it posted once b4

    • Daisie August 20, 2011 at 12:40 AM

Does sexy still means wht it used 2 mean? if yes, then tell me im d Queen of England too. Niaja accent sexy!?? bwahahahahaha

    • PaintedSkin August 20, 2011 at 3:03 AM

Is there really anything as a “Nigerian Accent”? We all know that Nigeria has many accents, I wonder what they identified as specifically being a Nigerian accent. Nevertheless, it is cool that Nigeria is on the list…Naija4lyf…hehehehe :)

    • cathy August 20, 2011 at 12:53 PM

      hilarious comments. una dooooooooooooooooo

    • olu August 20, 2011 at 11:18 PM

wat criteria did they use b4 coming out with dis finding? cnn will sit somewhere and come out of all sort of findings that cant be proved emperically, dey once came outthat genevieve is the best actress in afica, with dis wat was their sample size?

    • naijamusicritic August 21, 2011 at 10:32 AM

Guys we just need to appreciate the levity of the situation,i Think this article is not intended to offend or bamboozle anyone into thinking nigeria is a nation of fraudsters or so.The whole article is just based on the premise that a representative sample was taken and people just loved the accent so forget the occasional snipes in the article and just take it as a lighthearted view on nigerian accents nothing more nothing less.We should stop jumping on the 419 bandwagon and for crying out loud we are incredibly notorious for it and on that front its not a stereotype but a confirmed fact that quite a small minority of nigerians engage in this despicable act but thats Life and that story is for a different day.

    • bluebirdie August 21, 2011 at 11:38 AM

thank you bellanaija readers you’ve made my call duty awesome!!!!! love you guys!!!

    • Ijeoma August 22, 2011 at 6:09 AM

I can’t tell you the amount of times people have said “OMG! I Love your accent!” and the best part is “say something, anything” and i’m like “hmmm ok…hello?!” it makes me laugh now. I’ve gotten used to it. The worst part is some Americans appear disappointed when i say i am Nigerian. They start guessing from British to French to Jamaica and i’m like “nope! Nigeria. Africa.” it’s good though no lie. I love our sexy accent! Guys take another look, conversations get started. I love sounding AMAZING!

    • sunkissed August 23, 2011 at 10:54 PM

that video just highlights nigerian inferiotiy complex. why else are we forcing ourselves to speak “american” saying “yelz” and distorting our sexy (lol) accent. be proud of who you are jare and speak with our naija accent, insteas of talking of cookie jars as if we have them mtscheww.

    • lois December 15, 2011 at 7:03 PM

Which of the Nigerian accents? Efik, igbo or yoruba?
