Who is… Gaise

Ok, Gaise’s video had me laughing from the 1st minute. This is more because of his witty style of delivery with a topic of such weight as the band wagon attitude that our young folk are so easy to adopt.

So, the Who is… feature will be taking a totally different approach, albeit, experimental. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

A Brief Introduction

I am Akinade Ibuoye. Gaise is an acronym of my initials; Gboluwaga Akinade Ibuoye Samuel. When I was in KC, I used to write my names out in full; it came out as IGAS. A friend of mine helped rearrange it as GAIS. It was when I was going into fulltime music I added the ‘E’ to it. I attended First Foundation Nursery and Primary school, Ile-Ife, King’s College Lagos, and studied Economics at Obafemi Awolowo University.

When did you become aware that you could sing, that you could make a career out of music?

That was in 2004 when I really started writing songs and performing at small gatherings, but it was in 2010 after completing my National Youth Service that I chose music as a fulltime career.

Why music? Why not another career choice? How was that choice accepted by family?
A 2’1 in Economics from OAU would have been a good enough starting point in the corporate world, but nothing can give me joy and fulfilment like music. I made this clear to my family and now have their support.

What is the inspiration behind Follow Follow? Follow Follow is basically a song on influence, and the fact that there are things we do as a result of seeing others do them. So I just talked about it from different angles.

Where do you see Gaise in five years? An established artiste with a few albums to his name that the whole country is proud of, and whose influence has transcended the music.
What are the challenges of being in this industry? Promotion; getting your songs out for the people to hear. We face them a day at a time, a person at a time, a TV/radio station at a time, an event/show at a time; that’s how we’ve been growing.

His debut album, GAISEBABA, will be available in all major CD outlets as well as online on iTunes from August 26th.

Tune in

this song is so funny and meaningful and better than the others who just repeat senseless words in the name of following the western style of singing. I’m a fan of people like who dare to stand out and make good sense

    • Tonybede August 25, 2011 at 6:04 PM

Watching the young man that chose to call himself GaiseBaba was stunning, but by reading through the interview, I saw that as a 2:1 Econs graduate from OAU, Gaise indeed is a Superstar in the making. His worded and inspirational Follow Follow might redefine the Music industry. Kudos Gaise!

    • mayor August 25, 2011 at 6:25 PM

    • Hali August 25, 2011 at 6:50 PM

Nice…but he got something wrong. Tattoos are actually African. My Great grandmother and grandmother had them.

      • MJ August 26, 2011 at 12:55 AM

You’re right you know, cos ma grandma got ‘em too…buh i guess for them it was more of an identification and royalty thing. no doubt, it was to make them more beautiful too. also then you wld find it only on women (not men) and also in ‘right’ places like their hands, not where they put it nowadays

      • ola August 26, 2011 at 6:34 AM

yeah a lot of africans used to get tattoos way back in the days. but i guess it’s a different form of identity now. anyhoo ko matter.

    • OLAYINKA August 25, 2011 at 11:53 PM

This is the kind of music that we need to listen to. No offence to those who sing and compose song differently but when we are on the path of civilization and westernization we shouldn’t forget who we are and where we are coming from. People putting their names in short forms or forms that don’t make any sense, they are literary putting meaningless significance to their name. My African/Nigerian name is for a purpose and significance, I love my name OLAYINKA, it means I’m surrounded by wealth. I don’t see myself altering my name in anyways because I take pride in who. It brings joy to my heart that there are people like Gaise in Nigeria that feels we need to go back to our roots which is full of respect, pride and beauty. Culture lost is Identity lost.

    • OLAYINKA August 26, 2011 at 12:00 AM

Hi Hail, that’s very true, but you can’t compare the tribal tattoos of back then to the tattoos of this generation. I think its far too different.

    • GB August 26, 2011 at 3:32 AM
