It is rejoicing time for students, staff and stakeholders of University of Lagos who were against President Goodluck Jonathan’s announcement of the institutions name change to Moshood Abiola University.

Earlier today, a Federal High Court in Lagos granted an interim order restraining the Federal Government from renaming the University of Lagos, a 52-year old school widely known as UNILAG.

Justice Stephen Adah granted the interim injunction sought by students and alumni of the institution.

The defendants in the lawsuit are UNILAG, the University’s Governing Council, the UNILAG Senate, office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and the National Assembly.

On May 29th 2012, President Goodluck Jonathan arbitrarily renamed the University after Bashorun M.K.O Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12 1993 presidential election that was annulled by the military junta led by Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida.

However in the course of street protests, students and alumni of the university resisted the name change leading to the closure of the university.

The court has adjourned further hearing in the case till July 4.

The news is already creating a buzz on the campus as students are very excited to hear about the court order.

What do you think about this recent turn of events?

As much as i also detest this name change issue, i see no need for jubilation. How as this singular decision enriched any lives? Eradicate poverty and corruption? Improved healthcare? Developed the economy? Huh! i pray the energy channeled by the students and faculty could also be brought to use to instigate positive change in the country. At least students should protest and demand for better education. Faculties (most especially professors) should enrich their knowledge of whatever discipline they teach and stop sharing archaic theories/principles in the classrooms. Student do not have need for folklore, they need problem solving skills. Use the power of pen. May God us help us all.

There are other relevant THINGS.. such as investigation of the DANA air crash, bomb blast every sunday, unemployment, job security, General security, low standard of education. If the name is changed back to Unilag, it does not change any of the issues mentioned above. I thought a president has the final say, why are Students challenging his authority…?

      • Jane Doe June 25, 2012 at 6:21 PM

“…I thought a president has the final say, why are Students challenging his authority…?” This is problem with many of us, we don’t understand our rights and how the government is supposed to work- checks and balances of the arms of government…- and then we shout out half-assed ideas in spite of our good intentions. The president has final say? You thought wrong.
Since when was it not okay to challenge the authority of someone you have supposedly elected, i.e, YOU have given him that authority. Educate yourself, so that you can engage people intelligently.

Sorry to say, but how educated are you? You must be an Illiterate! our president is not Autocratic, so he doesnt have d final say. we practice democracy so GEJ can be challenged. he is not some authoritarian govt dat can just make any decision without going through the right process *mofo*

The Order to my mind is otiose and has been overtaken by events. A Bill has been sent to the National Assembly. Until this process is stopped and i seriously doubt that a court can do so, there is nothing to celebrate.

    • Purpleicious Babe June 25, 2012 at 2:40 PM

Thank God. am glad the court had reasoning and understands the impact and the history the name holds. If they want a Moshood Abiola University they should create one and not use a well know name.

Pls GJonathan, abeg u aim to improve facilities within the University and our graduate life.. Thanks.

that’s good….now how about they protest about better professors, and resources needed for a better education that would make their future promising…..

    • Richard pocket June 25, 2012 at 9:40 PM

I wil only be happy, if dey retain the name unilag forever.

    • Turayo June 25, 2012 at 10:24 PM

Folks keep saying why don’t Nigerians fight for more important things? But they have. They always have and people die. Just because it does not make Bella Naija news or wherever else you read does not mean people do not fight injustice as best as they can. And that brings me to this one point, what have YOU done?

I applaud UNILAG for fighting this and I applaud them even more for using the legal system. It will take a while, but this is a stepping stone. Oh and the youtube gal (via Madu Johnson’s comment) is hilarious. Her understanding of the country is seriously skewed. Her points are valid but the way she’s going about it is wrong. And calling an entire nation idiots is not a good idea.

That a group of students can protest this is seriously a big deal, and one I applaud them for. It’s a stand, a small and perhaps insignificant one to most, but it is a stand

    • marvel June 25, 2012 at 11:40 PM

      Unilag sounds much better.

    • NNENNE June 26, 2012 at 12:24 AM

Lessons learned: We can resolve our conflicts amicably without violence!
Together , we can steer our country to the right direction.
When the government allows people’s voice to be heard, great things happen.

    • Obi June 26, 2012 at 5:58 AM

Lol. Why change the name? Does it improve productivity/ standard? If that’s the goal, then simply changing a name is as useless as putting on clean clothes on a dirty body. I still wonder why someone would think of a name change and not a revival that can lead to sustained change & improvement.

    • himena June 26, 2012 at 10:36 AM

if i were jona i will stop flexing muscles with non issues such as a name change and move on to critical issues e.g the boko haram menace

    • tomeloma June 26, 2012 at 12:41 PM

Sigh! one down, ten thousand more to go…muscle flexing

    • The White List June 26, 2012 at 12:53 PM
