House of Reps Move to Ban Sale of Energy Drinks in Nigeria

Energy drinks have often been described as drinks that have potentially dangerous health consequences, the dangers lying in the high levels of caffeine contained in them.
For this and other reasons, the House of Representatives on Tuesday moved to ban the importation and sale of caffeinated drinks, popularly known as ‘energy drinks’, in the country.
Following a motion sponsored by a member, Yacoob Bush-Alebiosu, the house directed its Joint Committee on Health/Commerce to investigate the importation and distribution of the drinks.
According to Punch, Bush-Alebiosu listed Germany, Norway, France and Denmark among some of the countries that had banned the sale of the drinks in their jurisdiction “as a result of health risks caused by the consumption of energy drinks, including reported cases of deaths.”
He said that research conducted by the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the Royal Adeliade Hospital and Adeliade University in Southern Australia reveals a link between students consuming a particular brand of energy drink and the unstable state of their hearts.
Bush-Alebiosu added that many brands of the drinks had flooded the country, as consumers were also mixing them with alcoholic drinks. The drinks are now first choice beverages among young people, especially on campuses, bars, clubs and social functions across the country.
He said, “These drinks are being mixed with alcoholic drinks and become more deadly as they tend to mask the level of intoxication already settled in the bodies of the consumers of this mixture, thereby allowing young adults to consume much more alcohol than normal, which often times lead to young people passing out after such in-take and also an increase in road accidents involving such people.”
The lawmaker raised some pertinent points here. What are your thoughts on the sale and consumption of energy drinks and the move by the House of Reps to ban its sale and importation in Nigeria? Is this a good step?

Much as I don’t like energy drinks, it is not right to ban them as their major constituent is caffeine which is not prohibited .

these drinks are really dangerous. i took red bull 2 years ago and my heart was beating sooooo fast that i was rushed to the hospital. since then i have not taken one enegry drink.

Of all the things they can place a ban on, energy drinks REALLY??? REALLY??
With boko haram tormenting everybody, everywhere and all the time in Nigeria they should have more serious legislative business to do than running after Energy Drinks.
What we need to do is advice consumers to be more responssible in their intakes.

Seriously, it is now the duty of the Nigerian do nothing house of reps to be banning drinks, where in the world does things like this even happen, soon they will start banning panadol,cerelac,garri ijebu and ewa agoyin.
Just when you think things can’t be worse, how low can they go in Nigeria.
They will do better banning and enforcing a ban on underage drinking. Shouldn’t that be a higher priority where drinking is concerned? And that one has the nerve to say alcohol is found on campuses, WHERE MINORS HAVE ACCESS TO IT!!

I tire for 9ja o! What research have they done to determine the extent of the health risk associated with energy drink consumption in 9ja. Other serious countries that make moves to prohibit use of such products first carry out extensive research to find out how wide spread the problem is (e.g. how many people use energy products, what percent are adversely affected and the extent of the effect, which products are the main culprits). Then they can decide the best steps to take – increase tax on energy drinks, ban the products that have really high caffeine levels or just basic public education on the health risks. But no ohhhh …..in 9ja its just outright ban …mshewwwww
