GloRia WavaMunno presents “A-FREAK-A” at 2010 Africa Fashion Week

So far, we’ve seen a lot of great collections and I am definitely spotting the trends. Continuing the fabulous line-up of talented designers at Africa Fashion Week, was GloRia WavaMunno as she showcased her  collection on Day 3 of the event.

In this collection, she uses a lot of African print  in comparison to  most designers we’ve seen so far.

Gloria brings the statement 80’s shoulder pads, exaggerated pockets, harem pants and vibrant prints. And to maintain that feminine glamour embodied in her collections,  we see full skirts, sexy asymmetric sleeves and knee-length dresses accented with  sweet-heart necklines. In addition, we see  lots of deep plunging necklines; a major trend so far with collections showcased at Africa Fashion Week.

its an awesome collection but unfortunately i see her more as a stylist than designer coz theres nothing new. We have seen all these designs on several runwways

  • THE AMAKA July 3, 2010 at 7:14 pm

  • Omada July 3, 2010 at 10:59 pm

totally love this! esp the first jacket! absolutely fab!

  • styleqn July 4, 2010 at 6:44 am

these designs are beautiful @jukal. i personally took a look at these pieces at the show and they were stunning and stiching was perfect. if this is how a stylist designs, then ill take a stylist over a designer any day. am loving all the work this year a lot more talent than last year

  • PalmwineTapper July 4, 2010 at 7:03 am

Just copied the Western styles in ankara…no ingenuity. Yawn…

  • cricket July 4, 2010 at 8:36 am

I’ll wear all. Just need to work on my belly lol. Some of those designs require “kpam” as in flat stomach. Lovely collection.

  • noir July 4, 2010 at 10:00 pm

sexy collection. that jump suit is great and those jackets are HOT
i will be watching out for this lady. is she nigerian?

  • toni July 5, 2010 at 12:01 am

the very top piece is a blatant rip off of balmain smdh

  • THE AMAKA July 5, 2010 at 12:07 am

so boring!!! everyones a designer now… my tailor can do all this easily…no fresh idea?? thought thats what being a designer was bout…kinda like that obsidian collection, designers by force…

  • Enyinne July 5, 2010 at 7:54 am

Hey Toni, Balmain was not the originator of the strong shoulder trend. This was very popular in the ’80s. Fashion is cyclical and designers draw inspiration from everything under the sun…so it’s hard to say that anything is truly new. Designs are more so reinvented and/or reinterpreted. From a business perspective, it pays to design on trend (by way of interpretation, not imitation) because at the end of the day a standing ovation after a runway show will not pay the bills, but purchasing customers will.

  • Enyinne July 5, 2010 at 7:58 am

Meant to add – Congrats Gloria! You’ve designed a very saleable collection – and that is what matters (well, if your goal is to make money anyways). Now you just need an accessible outlet for customers to buy from you…because I would love to get my hands on # 1-4! 🙂

  • fokasibe July 5, 2010 at 10:04 am

    Very refreshing!! Me likey…A LOT!

  • bluu July 5, 2010 at 10:09 am

who the hell are you to be using my name to post negative comments? PLEASE STOP TRYING TO LOOK FOR MY TROUBLE.
everyone knows I don’t even type like you.
i had to look twice and realize that I didn’t write that.
    seriously, what is your problem?

  • konnie July 5, 2010 at 5:54 pm

    nice work

  • Femi D July 5, 2010 at 11:45 pm

haha…when the designer does something imaginative, you people say “who will wear that?” when they do something simple and commercially viable, you complain that is boring. i just hope designers do not ay ttention to the comment section of bella naija (well at least the critiques) because it would be too confusing…lol

  • matt July 6, 2010 at 10:38 am

there is passion in her work.her designs are amazing and most ladies can buy.thats the bottom line in fasion.
    all the best gloria.

  • Safronneta July 6, 2010 at 12:10 pm

  • Neharra July 7, 2010 at 3:31 am

    very beautiful collection!!

  • Tinky July 7, 2010 at 4:50 am

All those yawning and stuff and complaining about the stuff not being original…puh-lease! i dont think any one can re-invent the fashion wheel! everything done today has been done someway somehow before.its the touch added to it that makes it instead of yawning pls bring something new that nobody has seen before then i can see where you are coming from 🙂

  • The the July 7, 2010 at 3:39 pm

    +100000000 Tinky.
Would’ve been great to see some links posted to work of those with all the negative comments
But, alas, this is the internet after all, where all one need to be what you want to be (or to claim so),
is a pc with an internet connection.
Also, having seen anything before means nil.
As mentioned, theres probably nothing which hasn’t been done before.
Except, of course, maybe a dress made from tarmac or cement, which I assume, has never been done before, and for obvious reasons.

Loving this collection, and very proud to have someone like Gloria in Uganda!

    GO GLO!

Go glo go glo glo GO!

  • natty July 12, 2010 at 12:39 pm
